Ultra slim design and elegant style

The Boom Boom Speaker adheres to the style of the Choiix brand, “elegance, life style and ergonomics”. Its 1.2 cm ultra slim design with storable cord is really convenient and lends to portability. The gloss finish of the surface has a clean appearance and an elegant feel to compliment your style. Not only is the form of the Boom Boom Speaker stylish, the speaker lid itself is creatively designed for convenience. The protective speaker lid doubles as a stand when the speaker plays. A standard 3.5 mm audio cable makes it easy to connect to almost any audio device.

High quality sound effect, to share music with friends!

Portable music players, such as MP3, MP4, iPod, cell phones, and iPhone, make it easy for you to enjoy music on the go. Unfortunately the built-in speakers limit the enjoyment to one to maybe two users huddled around it! When you want to share music with a group of friends, there’s nothing you can do. With the Boom Boom Speaker on hand or in the pocket, this difficulty vanishes. As for the sound quality, the Boom Boom Speaker contains four integrated highly-sensitive speakers and an amplifier that provides impressive sound and volume. Just enjoy the music you like and share it with friends wherever and whenever the mood strikes you!

Cooler Master packages a mini-USB cable along with some literature with the BoomBoom speaker. The speaker can be powered by any powered USB port from any mini-USB cable.

The Choiix logo is on the top part of the speaker. The speakers themselves (this is a stereo speaker) are tucked away from damage by the top piece which folds over when you are ready to use them. It takes some force to pry the top part open. Watch the video to see this in action.

audio.jpg

There is a standard 3.5mm audio jack built into the unit. This audio cable wraps around the edges of the unit when not in use. Cooler Master did well when having this space saving design. Still, we would have liked to see a separate audio-in jack instead of the built-in connector. If the connector breaks, you're in trouble.

The unit can rest any number of ways. See the video to find out how it works while in use. The labeling for the BoomBoom is inside on the top cover. Like we said, it takes some force to get this open. If you don't have fingernails, good luck on getting it to open.

Comparing to a standard CD, the unit is larger. The width and depth aren't as important as the height. The unit is very slim. This makes it very easy to tote around in a laptop bag or other carry around type luggage. The BoomBoom is too big to fit into a pocket, though.

The mini-USB charging port is located on the side of the BoomBoom. This is a powered speaker and won't work without USB power. It takes power from any standard USB powered port.

Use

The BoomBoom speaker is pretty good for a portable speaker. While it won't have the bass of a standard pair of desktop speakers, it is better than many laptops speakers we've heard over the years. Since the unit is so slim, it lends itself to be carried in a laptop bag with ease. Pair this with an MP3 player and you can listen to music without having headphones on. While some usefulness is lost without the speaker being able to work without external power, most people will have an available USB port to power the device with. You can also bring along a portable USB power source like the Choiix Power Fort.

Since the speakers are so small, they had a bit of a tinny sound. This is pretty normal when you have small speakers. They just can't produce the same quality sound as bigger (cheaper) speakers can. You are sacrificing sound quality for portability. For road warriors, the portability is much more important. Lugging around a heavy pair of speakers isn't a good option.

We would have liked to see a audio-in jack instead of the built-in cable. If the cable breaks, so does the BoomBoom itself. Since the audio wire wraps around the unit, we noticed it pulling and getting nicked if we had it improperly seated. You need to have some caution while setting up the speaker and putting it away after use.

This speaker has no volume control. You'll have to rely on the volume controls built into the device providing the audio. Almost all MP3 players and the like have volume controls. This isn't a big issue. Still, we would like to see a volume knob on the unit.

Conclusion

The Cooler Master Choiix BoomBoom portable speaker has a MSRP of $24.99. Some people may think twice about purchasing this setup for use with their laptop. Most people are fairly happy with the sound coming out of their laptop speakers and we agree. This is for those people that want to have a bigger oomph and for those that want to listen to their MP3 players without having headphones on. For these people, the Choiix BoomBoom is a great device. We expect retail pricing to be a bit less expensive than the MSRP and if you need portable speaker, the BoomBoom is a good choice from Choiix. Slip it into a laptop bag and you're good to go.

ASE Labs would like to thank Cooler Master for making this review possible.
