Ellis Cannon to Teach Sports Broadcasting Through PA Cyber Charter School

High school program believed unique in nation

MIDLAND, Pa., July 21 -- High school students anywhere in Pennsylvania will be able to get an early start on a career in sports media and broadcasting in a new program being offered this year by the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School.

The Ellis Cannon Academy of Sports Media and Broadcasting is a two-semester program to be taught by the veteran sports broadcaster himself in real time as a Virtual Classroom course. It is believed the only one of its type in the nation.

"The sports media and broadcasting curriculum represents what I believe will become a very successful program within our course of studies, one totally unique to PA Cyber and one which I am certain will capture the imagination of our students," said Dr. Nick Trombetta, CEO.

It also marks the return of Cannon, a successful radio and television personality in the Pittsburgh market over the last decade, to his hometown of Midland, Pa. "That this innovative program is being led by one of our hometown favorites, Ellis Cannon, makes it only that much more special," said Dr. Trombetta.

Students must be enrolled full-time in PA Cyber Charter School to be eligible for the Ellis Cannon Academy. Interested students may log onto the website, http://www.pacyber.org, call 1-888-PACYBER (888.722.9237) or email enrollmentInfo@pacyber.org.

The fall semester class, Sports Media and Broadcasting I, will offer an introduction into print, radio, television and online sports journalism, from history to current applications. The spring semester, Sports Media and Broadcasting II, offers more advanced application of those journalistic platforms and broadcasting, including writing, audio and video production. On-site student field trips and contact with local and national sports media sources will be part of the class, said Cannon.

Cannon will be assisted by PA Cyber instructional supervisor and local sports personality Marc Grandinetti.

Cannon believes "this program ranks among the most rewarding, yet challenging, opportunities of my career. Teaching has long been an interest of mine and I was intrigued with the prospect of partnering with PA Cyber from the outset of my discussions with Dr. Trombetta."

A long-time radio and television personality, Cannon has appeared extensively on local and national television providing analysis on sports and sports law topics, and served as a broadcast member of the Pittsburgh Steelers Football Network. In addition to pending multimedia ventures, Cannon is publisher of Pittsburgh Sports Report and KidSPORTS Magazine, and is hosting PCNC's NightTalk weeknight television show.

A 1977 graduate of Midland's Lincoln High School and a former trial lawyer, Cannon has achieved success in sports broadcasting and publishing for over a decade, becoming one of the region's most respected, knowledgeable and entertaining sports personalities. In April he was inducted into the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame for broadcasting.

"I could not be happier to have this opportunity to help guide the next generation of sports broadcasters, especially to do so in partnership with PA Cyber, an amazing school created by the people of my hometown," said Cannon.

Media requests may be submitted to Marc Grandinetti at 724.643.1180, extension 1572.
