Motorola Enables Seamless Communications Across Public Safety Agencies and Jurisdictions by Offering Multiple Choices for Interoperability

New Technology Helps Increase Efficiency and Effectiveness of First Responders, Simplify Management of Interoperability Data Networks and Reduce Network Complexity and Costs

HOUSTON, Aug. 2 -- (APCO, Motorola Booth # 531) The Enterprise Mobility Solutions business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) today announced it is delivering on its Next Generation Public Safety plan launched earlier this year. By providing first responders with several interoperability options, Motorola helps ensure seamless communications across public safety agencies and jurisdictions so they can effectively coordinate a joint response.

The interoperability technology highlighted at the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials-International, Inc. (APCO) Annual Conference and Exposition, include Project 25 Multi-band radios, Project 25 (P25) Inter-RF Subsystem Interface (ISSI) solutions, Motorola Managed ISSI Service solutions, and MOTOBRIDGE(TM). Motorola developed these scalable, cost-effective interoperability solutions to help agencies in their emergency response efforts.

The newest offering is the unique, customer focused, Motorola Managed ISSI Service. Motorola eases system implementation by operating the interoperability network and coordinating with each agency system on the network. All talkgroup mapping and provisioning between agencies is also managed by Motorola so agencies can focus on their objectives.

"As part of our commitment to delivering advanced communications to the nation's public safety agencies, we have developed several interoperability solutions to help first responders connect between P25 trunked systems and establish radio contact, no matter what network they're on or how far apart they are, so they can better coordinate their activities," said Jim Connor, director, Motorola Interoperable Solutions. "With our advanced interoperability solutions, such as Managed ISSI service, we are well-positioned to help agencies around the globe connect disparate radio systems so they can optimize their emergency response."

Motorola is a leader in implementing P25 systems, with over 200 ASTRO®25 systems in operation worldwide and over 1.7 million subscribers. Motorola has provided managed service solutions for over 125 customers around the globe, including some engagements that have lasted as long as 25 years.

P25 ISSI technology enabled four public-safety radio networks to come together as one

To ensure its Managed ISSI service could connect P25 trunked systems over a large geographical area, Motorola conducted a trial in Texas, last fall. Four IP-based P25 trunked systems operating on multiple frequency bands in Austin, Laredo, Harris County and Parker County were connected to Motorola's NOC in Illinois by ISSI prototype gateways to provide interoperable talkgroups that would allow Texas first responders and their commanders to be in direct radio contact, even if they were hundreds of miles apart. As a result, 70 users from 25 different agencies were able to roam freely and communicate seamlessly with each other while remaining in radio contact with their home dispatchers.

"I really appreciate Motorola's willingness to do the trial," said John Chaney, senior systems technologist, Harris County, Texas. "It says a lot about a company. In Harris County, we know that ISSI will be a part of our interoperability solutions."

Managed ISSI Service provided interoperability between the states of Colorado and Wyoming

Recognizing they needed multi-agency and multi-jurisdictional response for wildland fires, pursuit and weather-related incidents on the highways along their border, the States of Colorado and Wyoming conducted an ISSI interoperability test this summer between the border agencies and counties. Motorola's Managed ISSI service was used to conduct the test, which successfully enabled interoperable communications between the states.

"This ISSI interoperability project has provided an opportunity to enhance communications between city, county and state agencies, which has bridged an important gap, that up until now had never been addressed," said Lynnette Stieb-Sorensen, regional communication manager, Colorado State Patrol. "Whether it be police, fire, EMS or Department of Transportation, all agencies now have the ability to communicate not only across county lines, but state lines as well. We are looking forward to the possibility of communicating with adjacent states in the near future."

MOTOBRIDGE(TM), ISSI technology and APX multiband radios provided U.S. Coast Guard with access to interoperable radio network throughout the Gulf Coast

To assist with clean up efforts surrounding the Gulf Coast oil spill, Motorola provided Mississippi with two additional MOTOBRIDGE patches to link its state police with Louisiana's Wireless Information Network (LWIN) across the border. In addition, Motorola provided ISSI technology to connect coastal areas in Texas' Travis and Harris counties and enable Louisiana's Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness' (GOHSEP) 16 talk groups to connect to the LWIN via their APX multiband radios. As a result, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) was able to access a 700/800 MHz interoperable radio network featuring fingertip roaming throughout the Gulf Coast region.

"We are pleased to see our innovative interoperability solutions helping first responders seamlessly communicate across borders so they can do their jobs more efficiently and effectively," said Connor. "Interoperability is an important part of the public safety community and we believe this is just the beginning of endless opportunities on that front."
