PrivacyStar for BlackBerry Takes an Innovative Approach to Privacy

Popular Privacy App Leverages the Capabilities of the BlackBerry Application Platform to Deliver a 'Super' Class Service

CONWAY, Ark., Sept. 24/PRNewswire/ -- First Orion, a corporation with a significant intellectual property portfolio dedicated to privacy, protection and preference, today announced that PrivacyStar, the feature-rich call-blocking and caller ID application, has entered into the BlackBerry Developer Challenge.

The third annual BlackBerry Developer Challenge highlights the BlackBerry applications that are at the top of its class, the "Super Apps" that are remarkable for their utilization of the BlackBerry Application Platform while providing a stellar mobile experience for BlackBerry users.

"Since launch in January, we have listened to the PrivacyStar community and our partners at Research In Motion (RIM) to add new features and functionality that best meet the needs of our user base while taking full advantage of the capabilities of the BlackBerry Application Platform," said Jeff Stalnaker, CEO of First Orion. "We are confident that all our efforts will demonstrate to the BlackBerry community that PrivacyStar is indeed a 'Super App' that is both useful and easy to integrate into your daily life."

PrivacyStar is an "always-on" privacy application that is constantly running in the background and listening for incoming phone calls. When a call is received the application makes the decision to block the call or allow the call to ring through, depending on users' call handling preferences.

PrivacyStar takes full advantage of the unique qualities of the BlackBerry Application Platform and is fully integrated with many of the native BlackBerry applications, including the call log, text and email messaging, address book, home screen, browser and the phone application itself. With PrivacyStar, BlackBerry users can highlight any caller's number and add it to their Privacy List to block by using a standard BlackBerry menu command.

PrivacyStar uses BlackBerry's robust push technology to keep users' Privacy List synced with http://www.privacystar.com ensuring it is always kept up to date. Additionally when the PrivacyStar user community identifies a number as making a high number of unwanted calls, the PrivacyStar server sends a push message in real-time resulting in that number being proactively blocked from every PrivacyStar user that has "SmartBlock" selected in their app settings menu.

Along with SmartBlock, PrivacyStar's "Share Number" feature makes it easy for users to share blocked numbers with others in their address book or any other native or third-party app by sending the number in a custom text message where they can easily add it to their Privacy List. If that contact does not have PrivacyStar installed, the message will include a link inviting them to join.

Designed for efficiency from the start, PrivacyStar uses a minimal amount of battery power, network bandwidth and memory. Through listening protocols, caching is optimized for minimal CPU and memory usage.
