Epson Debuts Digital Photo-Realist Bert Monroy's "Times Square" Image on Epson's New DisplayTrans Media at PhotoPlus Expo

Four Years in the Making and Built Pixel by Pixel, Monroy's "Times Square" Image Features More Than 750,000 Photoshop Layers of Real People and Places in New York City

NEW YORK, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- PhotoPlus Expo, Booth # 602 -- Epson today is showcasing a major artistic accomplishment in its booth at PhotoPlus Expo in New York City. Acclaimed artist Bert Monroy recently completed a 5' x 25' hyper-realistic image of Times Square that was printed on Epson's DisplayTrans(TM) media using an Epson Stylus® Pro 11880 printer. This massive backlit display will be visible to the public for the first time and can be seen through the duration of PhotoPlus Expo, Oct. 28-30.

Monroy's Times Square is the culmination of four years of work. Every element in the image was meticulously created pixel-by-pixel using Adobe® Photoshop® and Adobe Illustrator®. More than 750,000 Photoshop layers were used, bringing to life the likenesses of Monroy's family, friends, scores of luminaries from the imaging industry, and intensely detailed scenes and landmarks in and around Times Square.

"This is the first time I've shown my work in this way and it's really exciting to see how well the piece comes to life when illuminated on Epson's DisplayTrans," said Monroy. "It was crucial to use a printer and media that would reproduce the dark tones in the night sky, but also capture the vibrant colors and hold all of the intricate details. The combination of the Epson 11880 printer and DisplayTrans were pivotal in accomplishing these goals."

About Epson's DisplayTrans Media

Epson's DisplayTrans media is a revolutionary new backlit material designed for high quality ink jet printing. Professional photographers, service providers and labs can now use ink jet technology versus a labor-intensive, chemical based system to produce stunning backlits with dense blacks, brilliant colors and clean highlights.

"It's inspiring to see such an amazing work of art on our DisplayTrans media," said Jeff Smith, product manager, Professional Imaging, Epson America. "Bert's work pushes the boundaries of what's possible in today's world of digital imaging, which is very much in line with Epson's overall business philosophy."

Epson's DisplayTrans is ideal for labs and service providers who need to cost-effectively complete short production runs while maintaining the highest quality. Additionally, creative professionals are able to produce backlits in-house with all the control of an ink jet printing workflow. DisplayTrans is compatible with the latest generations of Epson Stylus Pro roll-based printers, and is remarkably easy to use with free downloadable profiles.
