OMG Announces Availability of Second Exam Level in Program to Certify Practitioners of Model-Based Systems Engineering Using SysML

Program Sponsors Include IBM, Lockheed Martin, Sparx Systems and No Magic  and OMG certification partner UML Technology Institute

NEEDHAM, Mass., Dec. 16, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- OMG® announces that "Model Builder-Fundamental," the second examination in the OMG Certified Systems Modeling Professional(TM) (OCSMP(TM)) program, is now available. The program's sponsors IBM®, Lockheed Martin, Sparx Systems and No Magic, Inc., and OMG certification partner UML Technology Institute Co., Ltd. (UTI), have made construction and validation of the exams possible. For more information, please visit http://www.omg.org/ocsmp.

Through this program, OMG will award the OCSMP(TM) certification at four levels, with each level serving as the prerequisite for the next one above. The second level, OCSMP Model Builder - Fundamental, tests the knowledge and skills required to construct a basic SysML model of a system. OMG expects that most practitioners of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) will want to acquire the Model Builder-Fundamental certification.

"The first level of OCSMP certification was designed for model users - for example, stakeholders who need to see that their requirements have been incorporated into a design, or test engineers who must confirm that specifications have been complied with," said Jon Siegel, Ph.D., OMG Vice President of Technology Transfer and Director of Certification. "This exam extends the program into model building. The holder of this pair of certifications - OCSMP Model User and Model Builder-Fundamental - has studied and learned the foundations of model-based systems engineering, and should be a productive contributor to modeling tasks performed by a Systems Engineering team employing SysML."

Another important supporter of OCSMP is the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE), whose Systems Engineering (SE) certification CSEP complements OCSMP. By design, these two programs work together to cover the SE domain including both conventional and model-based approaches. For information about the partnership between OMG and INCOSE, see the May 2009 press release.

Following the successful pattern established by OMG's three current certification programs developed in partnership with UTI - OCUP(TM) for UML® Modelers, OCEB(TM) for BPM Practitioners, and OCRES(TM) for Real-time and Embedded Systems Developers - examinations will be computer-based and administered by Pearson VUE through their network of secure testing centers.
