LULAC Pleased by Passage of FCC's Open Internet Rules

Chairman's Net Neutrality Order Appears to Allow for Continued Expansion of Broadband to All Americans

WASHINGTON, Dec. 22, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) today announced support for the passage of Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Julius Genachowski's Open Internet Order pending a full and thorough review of the order once it is made public. The provisions seemingly offered by the order appear to be a notable accomplishment for the Commission and a sign of its diligent efforts over the past few years to reach a solution that ensures the continuation of an open Internet while enabling consumers to obtain affordable access to broadband.

"The passage of the Open Internet Order will hopefully lead to new jobs and opportunities through high-speed Internet for people in all communities - especially for Latinos who have been on the wrong side of the digital divide for far too long," said Brent Wilkes, executive director of LULAC. "The Commission took a broad approach to its information gathering when developing this order, and we thank the Commission for integrating the voices of the many communities who look to the internet for continued economic empowerment.  Based on our understanding, this middle ground solution appears to show that the Commission was both deliberative and pragmatic when arriving at its ultimate policy."

LULAC hopes that the apparent resolution of the long-standing net neutrality debate will now mean more focus on ensuring 100% access and adoption will be the guiding principle of the FCC and the Administration's efforts in this area, especially as it relates to Latinos and other traditionally underserved communities.  This settlement will ultimately benefit consumers as it will enable Latino and other underserved communities to connect to broadband - both mobile and wireline- and realize the myriad benefits that broadband allows, regardless of ethnicity or income level.

"We will carefully review the FCC's order once it becomes public and we look forward to working with the FCC to focus now on the many crucial goals outlined in the Commission's National Broadband Plan," added Wilkes.

The League of United Latin American Citizens, the largest and oldest Hispanic membership organization in the country, advances the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of Hispanic Americans through community-based programs operating through 880 LULAC councils nationwide.
