Oregon Scientific Launches Build-Your-Own Weather Station Lab

From Frost Alerts to UV Exposure, Weather Trackers and Outdoor Enthusiasts Can Now Customize Weather Stations To Match Their Interests

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 5, 2011/PRNewswire/ -- Oregon Scientific, a leading designer and worldwide marketer of personal electronics, today announced the launch of the Weather Station Lab, an interactive online tool that offers a simple, cost-effective and customizable way for consumers to keep a constant finger on the pulse of upcoming weather changes.  From measuring rainfall for gardeners and wind speed and direction for golfers to optimizing home energy efficiency for saving money, the Weather Station Lab has something for everyone.  Oregon Scientific will unveil the Weather Station Lab at the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this week, Booth S117, South Hall 2, Ground Level.

The Oregon Scientific Weather Station Lab is an easy-to-use tool with a step-by-step process to building a custom weather station.  Users decide whether they want to build a basic or advanced model and begin by selecting a base console and are walked through a variety of indoor / outdoor scenarios paired with a wide range of optional station sensors and accessories, including:

--  Atomic Clock - Through a built-in radio receiver, the weather station is
permanently tuned to the frequency of the U.S. Atomic Clock signal in
Fort Collins, Colorado, which is set by the National Institute of
Standards & Technology.  After initial synchronization, a quartz timing
instrument keeps the correct time between Atomic Clock updates that
        occur throughout the day.

--  Indoor/Outdoor Temperature & Ice Alerts - Monitor additional rooms of
the home, office, or yard with wireless temperature and humidity sensors
for optimal heating and cooling efficiency and energy savings.  The
standard sensor can be used for monitoring an office's computer server
room remotely, whereas a floating temperature sensor can be used at home
for a pool or hot tub.  Users can also customize their weather station
to alert them to icy conditions outside.

--  Daily & Total Rainfall History Via Wireless Collector - Track daily and
cumulative rainfall by adding a gauge to the weather station with a
remote sensor in the garden.  The gauge includes excessive rainfall
alarm options, enabling gardeners to maintain their green thumb in the
        comfort of their home.

--  Eco Options - Keep maintenance costs to a minimum and use fewer
batteries by selecting a solar powered +ECO cell for the weather
        station, ultimately minimizing environmental impact.

    --  Weather & Barometric Pressure Forecast - Predict weather-related
activities and air pressure, which is crucial to predicting basic
weather conditions, within a 20-30 mile radius for up to 24 hours ahead
with a barometric pressure-based forecast sensor.

--  Wind Speed & Direction - Separate wind speed and direction sensors can
be added to a weather station for measuring wind chill, predicting lake
effect snow or drift conditions, and anticipating conditions for outdoor
sports and activities like barbeques, sporting events, golf, running,
        cycling, and fishing.

--  UV Exposure Sensor - There are several major health problems that link
overexposure to UV radiation - skin cancer, premature aging, cataracts,
and immune suppression.  A UV sensor can be added to a weather station
for personal use - or even to protect plants from too much sun.

Customizable weather stations available through the Oregon Scientific Weather Station Lab range in price from $39.99 for basic models through $599.99 for the above-and-beyond features weather enthusiasts crave.  The build-your-own weather station learning experience can be accessed via the Lab at www2.oregonscientific.com/weather-station-lab/.
