3 Continents and an Island: Obtiva's Dave Hoover Travels the Globe in Software Craftsman Journeyman Tour

CHICAGO, Jan. 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- DaveHoover, chief craftsman for software developer Obtiva and a prolific thinker in the Agile and software craftsmanship movement, is conducting an around-the-world Journeyman Tour where he'll be meeting, presenting, pair programming and learning with developers and fellow Rubyists from around the world.

Hoover is a RubyonRails and Agile enthusiast who is passionate about learning and has dedicated years of his career to studying, writing and speaking about software apprenticeship and craftsmanship. He'll be traveling tens of thousands of miles over a six-month period, during which time he'll glean new learning experiences that will change his perspectives forever.

"This tour will connect me with peers, colleagues, customers, friends and like-minded software development firms and enable us to elevate our learning through shared experiences," Hoover said. "Almost all the destinations on my itinerary are new to me and I'm looking forward to gaining and passing along new insights and awareness. Software craftsmanship and Obtiva's core values emphasize continual learning, and this tour brings that to life."

On separate portions of the trip, he will be accompanied by his young son and daughter who will serve as camera operator to record his interviews.

PHASE I: SWEDEN

Hoover travelled to Malmo, Sweden in November 2010 where he presented two sessions at Oredev, a developer's conference. He recorded an interview with CoryFoy and Michael "Doc" Norton and did some pair programming with Got.rb and Elabs in Gothenburg, Sweden.

PHASE III: SOUTH AFRICA, CARIBBEAN

In February, Hoover attends the Rubyfuza Ruby on Rails conference in Cape Town, South Africa where he'll lead a presentation on "The 9 Reasons You're Not Apprenticing Anyone" and do some pair programming and interviews. After the conference concludes, he meets up with his friends and clients at MadMimi for a day of adventure in South Africa.

From there, he flies to speakerconf in Aruba, an invitation-only international software technology summit. There, he'll present a session on "A Call to Action Toward Apprenticeship" and record interviews with attendees like Fred George and Michael Feathers.

PHASE IV: UNITED KINGDOM

In April, Hoover travels to London, England to meet with AdewaleOshineye at Google, with whom he co-authored the book "ApprenticeshipPatterns," and give a Tech Talk on Ruby to Google's London office. He goes on to meet and program with DRW, youDevise, and NewBamboo in London.

From there he travels to EdenDevelopment in Winchester, England for more programming and interviews.

His final stop is Edinburgh, Scotland and the ScottishRubyConference, where he delivers a keynote address on software craftsmanship and apprenticeship and reunites with three of his Obtiva co-workers from Chicago who are also speaking at Scottish Ruby.
