'Edge' Security Just Stepped Out of the Dark Ages - Literally

Revere Security's Medieval Knight at RSA Conference 2011 (Booth 225) Drives Home the Fact That Antiquated Security Solutions Won't Work for Today's Low-Power Devices

DALLAS and SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- RSA Conference -- "Why would you bring old armor to a hacker fight?" is the question Revere Security (http://www.reveresecurity.com), a leading digital security company targeting solutions for resource-constrained devices, will be asking the thousands of attendees at this year's RSA Conference. Or rather, their medieval knight will be.

Among the more than 250 booths at this year's conference, Revere Security hopes to stand out using a "live" knight in armor to convey a powerful message behind their new "Hummingbird" technology: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozJS_Bj_O2k.

According to Rick Stephenson, president of Revere Security, current digital security for resource-constrained devices and systems, such as smart meters and industrial control systems, is antiquated or out of step with today's edge devices, leaving these devices highly vulnerable. "The knight was the most compelling way to symbolize the urgent need to evolve our security practices. Would anyone want our military wearing a suit of metal armor to fight in Afghanistan?"

Stephenson says the main reason for the lack of security is that security professionals are trying to use practices that were designed for large-scale servers and computers where resources such as power, computational capability or memory are not constrained.

Revere's Hummingbird technology, which will be featured at the conference, is the world's first digital security solution for resource-constrained devices that only nominally affects performance.

Led by a team of world-class cryptologists including Whitfield Diffie, considered the "father of public-key encryption," Revere's Hummingbird technology - originally created through Department of Homeland Security funding to combat the problem of data security on resource-constrained devices - is already generating interest from major national defense contractors and other global organizations searching for a solution to this unmet and growing security need.

After more than five years of rigorous testing by experts and cryptanalysts at the University of Waterloo and former National Security Agency cryptanalysts, the nine-line algorithm is unmatched by other data security providers, as it is the first algorithm explicitly designed for resource-constrained devices- such as microchips and radio frequency identification-equipped devices - while minimally affecting performance.

With the application of "Hummingbird," the security of resource-constrained devices is no longer in conflict with their cost and performance, as it has been with past solutions. Revere's technology can be applied to devices in the healthcare, government, defense, aerospace, utilities, automotive and transportation industries.
