Primary School Pals Learn to Love Times Tables
NOTTINGHAM, England, February 15, 2011/PRNewswire/ -- Peter Cresswell and Andy Shipman, friends since primary school, have
launched a new website - http://www.timestoo.co.uk - aimed at helping
children learn to love times tables and improve their multiplication skills.
Peter Cresswell, now head teacher of a UK primary school said: "I don't
know about you, but when I was at school I didn't enjoy learning times
tables. Today, I see on a daily basis the need for children to know their
tables inside out. All too often I see children struggling with basic
multiplication and that really holds them back in learning more advanced
maths. That's why I developed Times Too."
Times Too is a simple web-based application that supports existing
classroom practice and places a real emphasis on times tables. With great
sports themed graphics and a simple, engaging style, it really helps children
enjoy learning multiplication. As it's web-based, children can also log on at
home and practise at the level set for them by their teacher.
"There's nothing drier than rote learning of times tables, so when Peter
approached me to design Times Too, I knew we had to make it as entertaining
as we could. In fact, one parent told me that her 7-year-old daughter was
having so much fun playing at home, she didn't realise that she was learning
at all!" commented Shipman.
The website provides both practice and test-based activities using the
language, images and models that children are already familiar with in
school. It asks standard, commutative and division questions to make sure
that children develop a thorough understanding of these fundamental building
blocks of maths.
"The children using Times Too have so far responded really well to the
site and are making great progress with their tables. They absolutely love
receiving the certificates that the site creates," said Dom Magner, a head
teacher using Times Too.
He added: "From a teacher's perspective, Times Too is providing
continuity in the teaching of times tables throughout the school. Being able
to analyse the data collected across year groups is useful for planning, and
the fact that there's no paperwork to deal with also makes it a pleasure to
use."
Times Too is free to use by a single class or costs just GBP10 per month
for the whole school to use, once more than one class begins using it.
"We want to encourage and promote the learning of times tables, which is
why we priced Times Too so competitively" Cresswell said. "We hope to see a
real boost in the number of children who know their times tables well, and
who then go on to develop broader skills in all areas of maths."
