Verizon Wireless Launches 4G LTE in Salinas and Monterey, CA This Year
WALNUT CREEK, Calif., March 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless announced today that it is bringing the world's first large-scale 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network to Salinas and Monterey by the end of the year. Customers in Salinas and Monterey will join wireless users in 40 other major markets that are already experiencing the fastest, most advanced 4G mobile network in America. The company plans to offer 4G LTE in more than 145 metropolitan areas by the end of the year.
"Verizon Wireless is making the best network even better," said Kevin Zavaglia, region president for Verizon Wireless. "Our initial launch in late 2010 covered one-third of all Americans and we plan to reach nine additional communities in Northern California and Nevada by the end of the year, including Sacramento, Reno and San Luis Obispo. We're quickly expanding our 4G LTE ecosystem and plan to reach everyone in our existing 3G coverage area by 2013."
When launched later this year, Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network will cover customers in downtown Salinas, Monterey and Carmel.
The HTC ThunderBolt(TM), launched Thurs., March 17, is the first in a suite of consumer-oriented smartphones, tablets, hotspots and notebooks that will run on Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network by the middle of this year. The new consumer devices join two USB modems for laptops from Pantech and LG in transforming the wireless experience, offering consumers new ways to connect and share their lives at blazingly fast speeds.
Since its launch fewer than four months ago, Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network has provided laptop users with 4G LTE modems with speeds up to 10 times faster than the company's 3G network. In real-world, fully-loaded network environments, LTE users should experience average data rates of 5 to 12 megabits per second (Mbps) on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.
Verizon Wireless' 700 MHz spectrum gives the company specific advantages with 4G, including a contiguous, nationwide network license. The company is building its 4G LTE network with the same commitment to performance and reliability for which it has long been recognized.
