Purple Hits Ground-Breaking Milestone for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Individuals

Purple's "The Power of One Number" Transforms Video Relay Service

ROCKLIN, Calif., April 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Purple Communications(TM), Inc. (OTC: PRPL) ("Purple"), a leading provider of innovative communications for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, has hit another ground-breaking milestone, this time, eliminating the need for Video Relay Service (VRS) consumers to use a different 10-digit phone number for each device they choose to make or receive VRS calls from.

"Many of our employees are also customers, so we have a very unique perspective when it comes to creating communications software and services," said President and CFO John Ferron. "Our goal is to make communications as free-flowing and easy as possible for our customers; and having one Purple phone number that works with every device is one of many ways we continue to do this."

Because VRS customers usually have several different devices they use to make calls - like laptops, computers, smartphones and other platforms - other providers require them to use a different 10-digit number for each device. Having several different numbers also makes it more likely for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals to miss more calls from hearing individuals, since each number is solely dedicated to one device. For example, if a deaf individual tries to call a hearing person, and the hearing person doesn't have that specific number tied to that specific device, there's a chance the hearing person won't take the call.

Now, with Purple's revolutionary one-number technology, Purple VRS users have the freedom and convenience of using only one 10-digit phone number with a variety of different devices of their choice.

"Before Purple, VRS customers - me included - were forced to have a separate 10-digit phone number for each device we made and received calls on," said Mark Bella, vice president of outreach. "So, if a customer made calls from his PC, his laptop, his smartphone, and even his VP-200®, he had to have a separate 10-digit phone number for each device, making it cumbersome and very challenging to keep track of what number went with what device."
