New Hampshire Holiday Shoppers to Benefit From Expanded AT&T Mobile Broadband Wireless Capacity
Additional Capacity Expected to Improve Connectivity and Performance of Voice and Mobile Broadband Data
NASHUA, N.H., Dec. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Just in time for the holiday shopping rush, shoppers visiting three popular New Hampshire malls are expected to experience improved mobile broadband coverage and voice performance as a result of continued investment and innovation by AT&T*. The company announced today that it has completed key initiatives in its ongoing efforts to expand the wireless capacity and enhance performance of its mobile broadband network throughout three popular New Hampshire shopping malls.
AT&T added new layers of frequency, also known as "carriers," to the Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), or in-building wireless systems, at Pheasant Lane Mall, in Nashua; The Mall at Rockingham Park, in Salem; and Fox Run Mall, in Newington - all Simon Property Group malls - to help serve wireless customers throughout the shopping malls. The additional carriers help manage ever-growing demand for mobile broadband services by allocating more network resources for AT&T's mobile broadband network.
A DAS has the ability to provide enhanced wireless coverage to customers in indoor or outdoor spaces where geographical limitations - terrain, building construction, etc. - or crowd density might otherwise prevent an optimal wireless experience. The additional capacity is expected to help improve call reliability and enable more consistent network access to help customers make the most of their AT&T devices while they shop for holiday gifts.
"The holiday season can be hectic, and that's why we're committed to enhancing wireless coverage for our customers checking off their gift lists, so that they can talk, text and surf even faster than before," said Steve Krom, vice president and general manager for AT&T New England.
"Our goal is for our customers to have an extraordinary experience. As part of the New Hampshire community, we're always looking for new opportunities to provide an enhanced customer experience and our investment in the local wireless network is just one way we're accomplishing that," said Owen Smith, regional vice president for AT&T New Hampshire. "In addition, our recently announced agreement to acquire T-Mobile USA will strengthen and expand our network in Maine. If approved, this deal means that we'll be able to expand the next generation of mobile broadband - 4G LTE - from our current plan of 80 percent of the U.S. population to more than 97 percent."
Today's announcement builds on the momentum established during AT&T's 2010 wireless investment, when it added more than 20 new cell sites in New Hampshire and upgraded 75 existing sites with mobile broadband technology. From 2008 to 2010, AT&T invested nearly $60 million in its New Hampshire wireline and wireless networks. Year to date in 2011, AT&T has added 24 new cell sites in New Hampshire, added capacity - or layers of frequency - to 221 cell sites, and expanded its mobile broadband network by enhancing 58 cell sites.
