Brass Monkey to Exhibit Cloud-Based Game System Featuring Smartphones as Controllers With Verizon Wireless at CES
4G LTE Network Powers High-Speed Gaming over the Web
LAS VEGAS, BASKING RIDGE, N.J. and BOSTON, Jan. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- From the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Verizon Wireless and Brass Monkey today announced the Brass Monkey app is being shown at the Verizon booth (Las Vegas Convention Center, South Hall, Booth #30259).
Brass Monkey is an app that turns smartphones into game controllers for use with its cloud-based game console. Customers can try out the Brass Monkey console by loading up playbrassmonkey.com in a browser on a PC or Mac and getting the iPhone controller application via a free download in the iTunes App Store, with an Android(TM) version coming soon. Players can experience a variety of games including action-based shooters and driving games as well as motion-controlled Wii®-style sports games like Monkey Golf. Brass Monkey makes console-style gaming accessible by utilizing devices that players already own, so the fun can go anywhere.
Brass Monkey is continually adding games to their system - including in-house creations and ones from other developers. Games for Brass Monkey can be created in HTML5, Flash or Unity via their free SDKs (software development kits) available on the Brass Monkey website. Brass Monkey's game platform is being featured in Verizon's booth on the GameTime Media Table, a collaboration run by Alcatel-Lucent's ng Connect Program and the MediaTile Company. The GameTime Media Table is a 42-inch HD touchscreen and high-performance computing platform integrated in a sturdy table form factor. It demonstrates association with mobile devices (iOS or Android) for direct control of games, video playback and content personalization and uses Verizon's 4G LTE network to download and stream media, creating a seamless gaming experience. The GameTime Media Table is envisioned to be located in gathering places: bars, restaurants, hotel lobbies and more.
Chris Allen, chief executive officer of Brass Monkey, said, "We are very excited to show how smartphones and Verizon's 4G LTE network can be used to create a next-generation video game console. Most people don't know that your smartphone can become a wireless game controller similar to the Nintendo® Wii. When they try it for themselves on the GameTime Media Table, they are simply blown away by the experience."
Verizon established its Innovation Program to encourage collaboration and help advance the 4G LTE ecosystem. The company's LTE Innovation Center in Waltham, Mass., and its Application Innovation Center in San Francisco were created to inspire, enable and develop non-traditional devices, services and applications that take advantage of Verizon Wireless' industry-leading wireless networks. Through the Innovation Program, Verizon seeks to expand the possibilities of 4G LTE by working with diverse companies, from start-ups to established players, in industries representing a broad range of verticals.
The Verizon Developer Community (VDC) is for developers who wish to work with Verizon to distribute their apps through the company's mobile storefront, Verizon Apps.
Verizon Wireless operates the nation's largest 4G LTE network and largest, most reliable 3G network. The company serves 107.7 million total wireless connections, including 90.7 million retail customers.
