PRBA-The Rechargeable Battery Association Hails Enactment of FAA Reauthorization
WASHINGTON, Feb. 15, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- George Kerchner, Executive Director of PRBA--The Rechargeable Battery Association, issued the following statement after President Obama signed into law the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, a four-year, $63.4 billion authorization of the Federal Aviation Administration.

"PRBA has long supported the FAA reauthorization legislation. We thank the President for signing this momentous bill into law. We also congratulate Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), ranking member Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John L. Mica (R-FL) and ranking member Nick Rahall (D-WV) for passage of a long-term FAA reauthorization bill. PRBA is especially grateful to Rep. Mica for his strong and effective leadership over the years on lithium-battery transportation issues."
"This new law promotes safety and reduces potential disruptions of international commerce essential to grow the U.S. economy and create jobs. Key provisions in this statute strengthen the safety standards for the air transport of lithium batteries and the thousands of products powered by these batteries, from consumer electronics products such as laptop computers and cell phones to advanced medical devices, including defibrillators and pacemakers, as well as critical military equipment."
"Most important for PRBA and its members, the new law bolsters the safe air transport of lithium batteries and products by directing the U.S. Department of Transportation to harmonize its rules on the air transport of lithium batteries with the more stringent international shipping requirements contained in the ICAO Technical Instructions. As part of a broad coalition of manufacturers and transportation companies, PRBA has repeatedly urged the Department of Transportation to upgrade its safety regulations by conforming its rules with stricter international labeling and packaging requirements."
"Safety remains PRBA's No. 1 priority. The President's action today is a step in the right direction. Legislation and regulation are critical to the safe transport of lithium batteries and products powered by these batteries. But air transport safety is best achieved through aggressive international and U.S. enforcement that compels shippers everywhere to comply with existing battery safety regulations."
