TeleCommunication Systems Introduces Cross-Carrier NAVBuilder® Development Platform
Advanced, Cross-Carrier, Cross-Operating-System Software Development Kit Provides Monetization Tools for Building Interactive LBS Applications at No Charge to Developers
ANNAPOLIS, Md., May 4, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: TSYS), a world leader in highly reliable and secure mobile communication technology, today announced new enhancements to its NAVBuilder® Software Development Kit (SDK). Mobile application developers can now leverage new NAVBuilder Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to develop location-based services (LBS) applications for mobile devices across U.S. carriers and platforms. NAVBuilder enables developers to integrate features such as local search, mapping, directions and other location features into their applications to use on Android, BlackBerry, BREW and iOS devices. Deals and coupons are available on Android, BlackBerry, and BREW devices. In addition, the SDK provides TCS' navigation invocation API that enables the launching of TCS' white label navigation applications. Over 1,000 OEM and third-party developers have registered for the free SDK.
"A recent study by ABI Research projects that U.S. carrier location-based revenues will nearly double to $4.1 billion by 2016," said Jason Penkethman, vice president of TCS' Navigation and Telematics group. "Additionally, there is an increasing need for mapping and navigation tools across mobile platforms. The NAVBuilder SDK will allow LBS developers to tap into this increasing revenue stream, while providing them with solutions to the major challenges they face: how to build their applications so that they work across multiple handset and tablet operating systems; how to provide an application that will work across multiple wireless carriers; how to monetize their application, even if they decide to offer it at no charge; and how to access the power of local search, detailed maps, customizable location data and state-of-the-art navigation without re-inventing the wheel or coding multiple times. NAVBuilder truly reduces development costs and time-to-market."
TCS' NAVBuilder consists of LocationKit, MapKit and mobile deals and coupon APIs.
-- MapKit provides an embeddable map interface through a set of functions
that enable applications to display map imagery within windows and
views. The interface can annotate maps with points of interest, local
deals and coupons. Developers can add a revenue stream to their
applications which are filtered by category and type to maximize
results;
-- MapKit also provides directions, custom layers and other custom
information and supports the device's native gestures (such as pan and
zoom) with minimum developer effort. Geocoding and reverse geocoding
services are included in the SDK, as well as a comprehensive set of
local search APIs;
-- LocationKit allows users to access a single position or a continuous
stream of positions to determine the current latitude and longitude of a
device; the interface uses the available hardware and the NAVBuilder
server to provide a location using stand-alone GPS, Wi-Fi or cell
ID-based positioning.
