Vaadin to Support Google Web Toolkit (GWT) Development
SAN FRANCISCO, June 29, 2012/PRNewswire/ --
Vaadin Ltd. joins the newly formed GWT [http://vaadin.com/gwt ] steering committee to
deepen its commitment to the technology used in its flagship product. Vaadin announced
that the upcoming version 7 of Vaadin Framework will include a full version of GWT
[http://vaadin.com/gwt ], is compatible with GWT and Vaadin commercial support is widened
to cover GWT based projects.
GWT and Vaadin are the two most popular technologies for building modern web
applications in Java. The developer communities of Vaadin and GWT have been closely
related since the introduction of GWT-based rendering in Vaadin in 2008. Including all of
GWT in Vaadin makes this relation even tighter, makes Vaadin a drop-in-replacement for GWT
and lays a foundation for making the development of rich cross device user experiences
more productive than ever.
"Being developers, we call this new product strategy Vaadin += GWT. This means that we
include a full copy of GWT directly in our product and maintain it ourself. Merging the
technologies lets the developers combine the benefits of the unparalleled productivity of
the server-side with the fine grained control of the HTML5 platform enabled by GWT",
explains Artur Signell, VP of R&D at Vaadin.
Google announced today at Google I/O a plan to move GWT towards a more open
development model, and the formation of a steering committee to oversee future development
of GWT. "We are very excited to join the effort of making this exceptional technology even
stronger", says Joonas Lehtinen, CEO of Vaadin.
Both Vaadin Framework and GWT are distributed under the liberal Apache open source
license. The business model of Vaadin is to help companies to build their applications
using this free technology by providing professional support, tools and services. With the
inclusion of GWT, Vaadin expands its commercial offering to cover also GWT based projects
- effectively making it the only source for first level support for GWT.
