Vuzix Sells Out of Gold Software Developer Kits for New M100 Smart Glasses
Running a full native Android OS simplifies development and provides compatibility with thousands of existing applications
NEW YORK, May 1, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Vuzix Corporation (TSX-V: VZX, OTC:BB: VUZI, FMB: V7X), the leading developer and supplier of smart glasses, announced that driven by strong demand, its initial run of Gold Edition M100 Smart Glasses Software Development Kits (SDK) have sold out with fulfillment expected over the coming several weeks. The Vuzix M100 Smart Glasses are a wearable display and computer for your smartphone. Vuzix is now shipping a limited number of M100 Gold SDKs to software, and augmented reality content developers and plans a wide-scale retail launch of the M100 this summer. Winner of the BEST OF INNOVATIONS in the Wireless Handset Accessory category at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the M100 continues to grow in popularity in the smartphone developer community.
Since its launch, the Gold Edition of the Vuzix M100 Smart Glasses SDK has received overwhelming attention from developers with several ordering multiple development kits to help accelerate their development. The Vuzix M100 SDK Silver Edition continues to be available with emulation software shipping immediately and hardware scheduled to ship in early summer.
Vuzix President and CEO Paul Travers said, "It is great to see such overwhelming demand for our Smart Glasses, especially from the enterprise and prosumer sectors. Since Vuzix M100 Smart Glasses are very similar to an Android based smart phone, using the same general hardware and Android OS, developers are finding it easy to write and port applications for the M100. Many of the applications available today through popular Android app stores are already confirmed to work unmodified with the M100 and in other cases just a few simple modifications allow them to provide optimum performance. This native mode compatibility opens the door to thousands of existing and optimized applications being able to work with the M100 on the day it ships."
Technology opinion leaders and the press are writing about smart glasses becoming the next big wave in mobile technology. According to ABI Research, wearable computing devices will exceed 485 million annual device shipments by 2018. A recent article in Scientific American titled, "When Everybody Starts Wearing Smart glasses, Google Won't Be the Only Player," explains that sales of the devices will depend on the development of compelling apps and presents Vuzix' M100 as a player in the smart glasses space.
