IntelliMagic Vision Supports z/OS CPU Measurement Facility

New release features include support for SMF 113 records

SOUTHLAKE, Texas, July 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- IntelliMagic, the worldwide leader in Availability Intelligence for z/OS environments, today announced IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS version 8.2.  Availability Intelligence offers a new way to protect continuous availability at the primary site with new visibility into the risk in the z/OS infrastructure to handle the peak workloads.  This visibility is created through automatic interpretation of the SMF, RMF, and configuration data using specialized, built-in domain expertise.

This major release introduces support for CPU Measurement Facility (CPU MF) data in the SMF 113 record that provides insight into how your processors are performing.  While the MIPS concept has been long retired, processor performance remains a key concern for all installations, if only because license charges are tied to it.

"The data in the SMF 113 record was designed to help IBM engineers understand customer workloads, both to resolve problems on current hardware and to help with the design of future generations," say Gilbert Houtekamer, Managing Director of IntelliMagic. "SMF 113 usage for sizing workloads is now the basis for IBMs' LSPR values. IntelliMagic Vision now adds a level of interpretation to these counters that enable customers to use them to tune their environments for the improved processor performance."

As mainframe processors continue to grow in scale, the effective processor speeds become increasingly dependent on the effectiveness of the processor caches and translation lookaside buffers (TLB).  With IntelliMagic Vision, you can now see what fraction of the processor capacity is lost because of TLB-wait and cache miss, and how much improvement you get from such features as HiperDispatch and Large Pages.

To further tune the processor efficiency, IntelliMagic Vision provides reports that give insight in I/O or processor delays in the z/OS environment that cause tasks to hold memory longer than strictly needed.  When such delays are addressed, IntelliMagic Vision can show the resulting improvement on the processor performance.

For more information on SMF 113 records, please see IntelliMagic's new white paper "Reporting on the Processor Hardware with SMF 113 Records."

Version 8.2 also introduces new reports and dashboards to track whether the Workload Manager (WLM) goals defined are actually met.  This shows whether the important workloads get the service levels they need, and also to see if the goals that are defined are realistic.  Unrealistic goals make it hard for the Workload Manager to optimize the overall throughput in the best possible way.  The new capabilities summarize the workload manager health for an entire sysplex in a single view.

To discover more about IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS Disk and CPU Systems please join the IntelliMagic Webinar "New Processor and Workload Manager Reporting in IntelliMagic Vision 8.2 for z/OS" on Wednesday, August 12(th) from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM CDT.

During the webinar IntelliMagic storage performance expert, Dave Heggen, will show how IntelliMagic Vision can be used to monitor the performance of your z/OS System and Disk infrastructure and minimize performance problems as well as highlight some of the new performance perspectives, charts, and dashboards introduced in IntelliMagic Vision for z/OS version 8.2.

Mainframe sites interested in seeing their environment's data with the new reporting and availability protection capabilities are invited to participate in a low-cost IntelliMagic Vision as a Service engagement.  Dashboards and reports are typically available within 24 hours of when your SMF data is first sent to IntelliMagic servers, and can be accessed through the IntelliMagic Vision Web Reporter.  For more information, please contact sales@intellimagic.com.
