Fusionopolis Two: Accelerating Cross-Disciplinary Innovation, Discovery and Collaboration in one-north
SINGAPORE, October 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ --
Fusionopolis Two, the latest addition to one-north, an R&D hub and icon of Singapore's
knowledge economy masterplanned and developed by JTC, was officially opened by Prime
Minister Lee Hsien Loong today.
With its state-of-the art facilities at the heart of one-north's Fusionopolis cluster,
the opening of the $450 million Fusionopolis Two provides co-location opportunities for
research, innovation and enterprise, aimed at sparking interdisciplinary collaborations
amongst the public sector and with private sector players. This ecosystem to support
knowledge creation in science and technology will lead to new areas of economic growth for
Singapore.
The opening of Fusionopolis Two comes against the backdrop of the highest Gross
Domestic Expenditure in R&D (GERD) recorded, at S$7.6 billion in 2013. 2013 also saw the
highest level of RSE jobs created since 2005. Of the 1,800 new RSE jobs created in 2013,
1,100 were in the private sector. These results reflect the continuing development and
growing stature of Singapore's R&D landscape. Â
Anchored at Fusionopolis Two are the following A*STAR science and engineering research
institutes: the Data Storage Institute (DSI), Institute of Microelectronics (IME),
Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE), and the Singapore Institute of
Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech).
Already located at Fusionopolis One are the Institute for Infocomm Research (IsquaredR)
and the Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC). Together, these two research
institutes under A*STAR have established 19 joint labs with industry since they were
located at Fusionopolis in 2008.
The co-location of these institutes brings together research capabilities such as data
analytics, computational sciences, social and cognitive computing analytics, advanced
materials, silicon photonics, future data centre storage technologies and nanofabrication,
among others.
Fusionopolis Two has been designed and developed by JTC according to A*STAR's research
needs, adhering to stringent requirements for cleanroom facilities to be
vibration-sensitive and pollutant-free. The layout has also been designed to foster
greater interaction and deepen scientific collaborations through the use of integrated and
shared facilities.
The network of A*STAR's research institutes and other public and private research
bodies at Fusionopolis, as well as the robust biomedical sciences expertise built up at
Biopolis, are emblematic of the Government's commitment to transform Singapore into a
knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy, where both public and private sectors can work
closely to create impactful economic and societal outcomes for Singapore.
