Portable power: Car charger utilizing Covestro polycarbonate keeps devices juiced up ... even when the drive is done

PITTSBURGH, Jan. 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- When on the road and your mobile device is running on empty, a car charger is an invaluable accessory. To solve the frustration of reaching a destination with only a partial charge, mobile hardware company Nomad has taken the standard car charger one step further with the Nomad Roadtrip. The Roadtrip is an innovative car charger with a built-in portable battery for on-the-go use.

When designing for the modern nomad, materials must be sleek, tough and lightweight. To meet these essential requirements, Nomad chose Makrolon(®) 2207 polycarbonate from Covestro LLC for the device's protective outer shell.

"Materials selection is important to us, and we find Makrolon(®) 2207 polycarbonate has the right attributes for our needs," said Brian Hahn, chief of product, Nomad. "The polycarbonate is easy to work with, highly consistent and provides a strong, high-impact shell for Roadtrip that withstands daily use. Several of our products use the material and we've found it holds up well for our applications."

Roadtrip charges a mobile device via the car's standard 12V power outlet and features a 3,000mAh backup battery inside that provides power on the go. Roadtrip uses pass-through charging, in which the plugged-in device is charged first, followed by the internal battery. It has two charging ports, a standard USB Type-A port and a USB Type-C port for charging the latest gadgets.

"For active mobile users, light weight and durability are key characteristics for portable chargers," said Joel Matsco, industry segment manager, Covestro LLC. "By developing a protective outer layer for the Roadtrip with Makrolon(®) polycarbonate, Nomad offers consumers an elegant solution that fits their on-the-go lifestyles without weighing them down."

Makrolon(®) 2207 polycarbonate is a high-flow thermoplastic material suitable for thin-wall molding. This polycarbonate grade has easy-release properties and is an excellent choice for applications that need a durable, heat-stable material.

"We are thrilled that Nomad has maintained confidence in our materials and we are pleased to continue our relationship with a company that is designing innovative products for today's mobile world," said Jeffrey Kozody, field market development, Covestro LLC.

Makrolon(®) 2207 polycarbonate is utilized in other Nomad products including the NomadClip, NomadKey and NomadPlus.
