Medication Authentication with Aegate: DocMorris Pioneers in Falsified Medicine Protection
HEERLEN, The Netherlands and LONDON, March 31, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --
Today DocMorris, in collaboration with Aegate, announces the implementation of a
medicine authentication system that will allow it to meet the legal requirements of the EU
Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD). By acting now, prior to the February 2019 deadline
for application of the FMD, DocMorris will be the first mail order pharmacy in Europe to
be able to put the FMD into daily routine at the pharmacy - to the benefit of their
patients.

Under the FMD manufacturers will have to provide individual pack safety features via a
serialised code and tamper evident seal that meet EU specifications. These elements can
now be tested. To do this Aegate has developed a demonstrator, that shows the
end-to-end-authentication process from the manufacturer to the pharmacy which is the
dispensing point. The benefit for the pharmaceutical manufacturers: Thanks to the
cooperation between Aegate, the worldwide leading specialist in medication authentication,
and Europe's largest mail order pharmacy DocMorris pharmaceutical manufactures will be
able to check, their serialisied medicine packs under real conditions.
Verification occurs using the technical connection to an authentication platform by
Aegate, one of the selected National Blueprint providers in Europe. The Aegate platform
fully meets the specifications of the directive, and both pharmacies and mail order
pharmacies can connect to the European-wide system.
For years, DocMorris has supported measures that strengthen medication security at
both a European and national level. "As the most modern pharmacy in Europe, it is clear
that we want to be the pioneer in implementing the guidelines from the Falsified Medicines
Directive to offer our patients the maximum level of protection when purchasing
medications. The Aegate platform, which can be easily integrated in our current
pharmaceutical system, guarantees maximum security even with a huge amount of daily
authentication requests," said Prof. Dr. Christian Franken, Head Pharmacist and Chief
Pharmaceutical Officer at DocMorris. The mail order pharmacy dispenses more than 20,000
prescription medicine packs to consumers in Germany every day.
"An uninterrupted verification process from the manufacturer up to the dispensing is
the perfect way to discover falsified medicines," said Mark de Simone, Aegate CEO. "With
our system we are protecting the health of patients. Furthermore, we offer pharmaceutical
manufacturers an effective and efficient implementation of the European Falsified
Medicines Directive in time." Aegate already checks 2.5 million transactions a day - in
less than a quarter of a second response time for the dispensing pharmacist. The British
company is active in 13 European countries and, with its system, has verified over 3.9
billion medicine packs in recent years.
