Easy-Install Beacons Will Slash Deployment Costs for Proximity Marketing

NASHVILLE, Tenn., April 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Internet of Things company BKON Connect Inc., with its PHY.net context management platform, plans to further simplify Physical Web beacon deployment by allowing the beacons to essentially install themselves. This innovation eliminates the need for trained installers or even a configuration app, making enterprise-scale proximity marketing deployments simpler and more cost-effective than ever.

This Easy-Install feature leverages the Physical Web's use of standard Web technology and PHY.net's power to remotely control beacon URLs. New research by Forrester shows that current beacon deployment and management methods with the iBeacon protocol can cost $300 per year, per beacon. The complex problems associated with these deployments are solved by having each new beacon broadcast a configuration web address, thereby bringing proximity marketing within reach.

For example, retailers can add proximity marketing channels by presetting any necessary tracking variables with PHY.net - variables like "store number," "department" and "product ID" - along with content destination. Once the beacon is powered on, it broadcasts a setup URL. When selected, in-store personnel can fill-in those variables on-the-spot. Once saved, the beacon automatically begins broadcasting the desired content. From then on, account owners can remotely manage, edit and schedule content for that beacon with PHY.net.

A beacon in Easy-Install mode will be visible to any Physical Web browser, including Google Chrome or BKON Browser. This feature builds upon PHY.net's use of preconfigured beacons and URL control and has an anticipated release in time for summer deployments.

PHY.net and the Physical Web resolve two common complaints with beacons, which have been dominated for the past two years by Apple's iBeacon(TM) protocol:

--  Deployment Time: Highly technical deployment experts were needed to
travel and map an environment for iBeacon setup. Now, on-site authorized
users with novice Internet experience can deploy beacons, reducing
deployment time and dramatically lowering installation costs.
--  Ongoing Management Cost: Because change is expected, a Physical Web
beacon network is far less expensive to maintain and manage. While
iBeacon deployments often require expensive re-calibration whenever the
install area changes, adding Physical Web beacons enhances user
        experiences with more content.
