eSports Startup Ethos Aims to Grow the Amateur Gaming Community with Leagues
ATLANTA, July 13, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Last week, Ethos launched a new site to give online gamers a voice in the development of its new platform, dedicated to matchmaking and league creation for gamers of all levels. Ethos will establish a new way for players of team-based games, like League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, to find teammates and join organized leagues and tournaments for prizes depending on their competitive level.
Through the website, Ethos wants its friends in the gaming community to give feature feedback, share development updates and support our first round of development through a fast-paced Indiegogo campaign that will reward early backers.
Ethos began with a simple question between creators Daniel Wang and Michael Farris, "Why do gamers invest hundreds of hours into competitive, ranked games like League of Legends or Counter-Strike if they know they won't become a pro?"
"The easy answer is that these games are incredibly fun," Wang said. "But we think the millions of amateur gamers want a more organized experience, including scheduled competition and transparent interactions with teammates and opponents. We also realized amateur gamers lack options for automated leagues, a format many gamers are familiar with on the pro scene."
Ethos wants to give gamers two of the most critical elements for successful leagues: great teammates and balanced competition - both of which are often missing from online gaming. Farris learned the importance of both when organizing Mario Kart leagues for college friends.
"That's why we're pushing to have a great matchmaking system that considers factors beyond just rank and role," Farris said. "We want a system that also looks at your preferred play style, personal objectives, along with factors like teammate ratings, reliability ratings and more. And we know gamers are looking for a solution like this."
Ethos is backed by strong relationships in the eSports, sports and entertainment industries, but the startup wants to build stronger relationships with the gamers the platform will serve.
"Our vision is to establish a welcoming and diverse community that develops gamers for life," Farris said. "As avid gamers ourselves, we know the pain of investing hundreds of hours in a game community that doesn't always match our passion. We think Ethos will be a huge step toward providing a better way to enjoy our favorite games."
