Tencent QQ Drives Popularity of AR Among Internet Users in China on the Occasion of 2016 Olympic Games
SHENZHEN, China, July 29, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Tencent QQ is entering the augmented reality (AR) arena, triggering a trend among QQ users in China who have started to play a game called "Experience AR by Passing the QQ Torch." QQ has initiated a promotion, "Experience AR Animations by Scanning the Mona Lisa Portrait," attracting the interest of internet users in China.
Mobile QQ users in China only need to scan the Mona Lisa portrait using the "QQ-AR Scanning" feature, and then they will see a small animated penguin carrying the Olympic torch and the words "Play QQ-AR Torch Relay with Mobile QQ Now" on the screen. In addition, Tencent QQ designed the "Painted Eggs" feature for the game, which allows users to spot spoofed renditions of the Mona Lisa portrait and random launches of AR animations.
As a follow-up, QQ launched the game, "Experience AR by Passing the QQ Torch," on the occasion of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, in which the first player must first successfully light the torch then pass the torch on to the second player, with each subsequent player then passing the torch to the next. After the torch has been handed along a preset number of times, the player holding the torch can unlock and view the AR animation for the next city along the route, ultimately reaching the final destination of Rio de Janeiro. During the process, the players will view six animated episodes. Each player who has passed the torch will find a torch logo next to his or her QQ headshot. QQ, with its powerful social network, provides an opportunity for Chinese internet users around the world to experience AR.
This is the first time that a Chinese social media organization has used AR technology, serving as a testing ground and model for what AR-based networking could look like in the future.
