SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- UniPixel, Inc. (NASDAQ: UNXL), a provider of advanced touch solutions to the touchscreen and flexible electronics markets, today announced the 18(th) design win awarded to the Company since January 1, 2016. The product, a 13.3-inch laptop computer from an existing major PC manufacturing customer, will be targeted to the consumer market.
The program will utilize UniPixel's XTouch(TM) highly responsive touchscreen sensors with its outstanding finger-touch and capacitive stylus performance. The device will support an active stylus based on the Microsoft Pen protocol. Initial production validation units are expected to be delivered during the upcoming fourth quarter of calendar 2016. Volume production is expected to commence in the third quarter of calendar 2017. The announcement of this new product win, plus the programs originally acquired in the April 2015 acquisition, and the one product announced late in 2015, brings to 22 the total number of programs awarded to UniPixel.
Jeff Hawthorne, president and chief executive officer of UniPixel, said, "This is an important order for UniPixel as it expands the number of devices featuring our XTouch sensors for the consumer market. This represents a significantly larger market than the commercial market, where the bulk of our orders have come from to date. The copper metal mesh design of our XTouch sensors significantly lowers sheet resistance and allows for superior finger touch and full support of the active stylus Microsoft Pen protocol designed into this new laptop. As stylus use continues to increase, our XTouch sensors are designed to provide a superior computing experience. We are pleased to have gained the confidence of this leading PC manufacturer to introduce the benefits of our products to their broader customer base."
Mr. Hawthorne continued "We are also pleased that the metal mesh market, which is the basis of our proprietary technology, appears to be rapidly growing over ITO, the long time incumbent technology. The success of the Microsoft Surface tablet and other similar devices incorporating stylus technology plays to our touchsensor strengths."
