Social Media Meets Financial Education at TheDreamBigSite.org
- ICMA-RC Launches New Web Site for Public Sector Employees -
WASHINGTON, April 29 -- thedreambigsite.org, a new financial education social media Web site targeted at Generation Y users, launched this week. ICMA-RC created the Web site as a resource for Gen Y users who work for or are considering a career in local, regional, municipal, or state government.
"We want to inspire public employees to dream big about the things they want in life, while keeping in mind all the things they will need to achieve them," said Gregory Dyson, ICMA-RC senior vice president, and spokesperson for thedreambigsite.org.
Statistically, Gen Y, also known as Millenials, are very aware of the responsibility they will need to take to build retirement security. A report from the Employee Benefits Research Institute shows that one in six Gen Y workers have given retirement at least some thought. Twenty-percent say they have given it a great deal of thought.
"thedreambigsite.org aims to be a comprehensive and interactive resource for financial education that, we hope, will motivate Millenials to become more actively engaged and interested in planning their saving strategies and retirement goals," Dyson said. "Starting early is crucially important in building retirement security."
Designed to be an engaging financial education hub for young adults between the ages of 18 and 32, thedreambigsite.org offers the following features:
-- Blogs written by and for Gen Y users focused on five main topic areas:
credit, investing, loans, saving, and retirement;
-- Save & Share: a Web-based application that allows users to discuss
their dreams, post their savings goals and strategies, and share them
with friends on Twitter or Facebook;
-- Ask the Expert: a place to ask certified financial planning experts
questions about financial planning, saving, and investing;
-- Reality Check: an array of useful financial planning calculators;
-- Pocketchange: a mobile version of the Web site that enables users to
communicate and share financial tidbits with friends on the go.
"When it comes to financial planning, public sector employees have a unique set of needs and we want this site to be a helpful resource for them in their search for information," Dyson said. "That said, we believe in the message for all young adults, and hope that financial literacy organizations across the country will take advantage of the site and encourage their Generation Y members to do the same."
