GainSpan's Application Development Kit Jump-Starts Innovation for Wireless Video Applications
Complete video streaming reference design ideal for security/surveillance cameras and baby monitors
SAN JOSE, Calif., May 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- GainSpan(®) Corporation, a leader in ultra-low power Wi-Fi connectivity for the Internet of Things, today introduced a complete reference design for wireless video streaming applications such as remote security/surveillance cameras, car back-up cameras and video baby monitors. The new Video Application Development Kit (ADK) speeds and simplifies design and integration of video streaming services into end products based on GainSpan Wi-Fi modules.
GainSpan's Video ADK includes hardware and software that help reduce the time needed to develop products that deliver live video over Wi-Fi. With the development kit, users can stream the video feed from a Wi-Fi enabled camera to an iOS or Android based smartphone.
Included in the Video ADK is a video application board, complete hardware design package and software suite with reference source code for the embedded video application, and iOS and Android based mobile applications. An Application Evaluation Kit (AEK) is also available that provides a binary version of the software and video mobile application.
The Video application board features the GainSpan GS1011M Wi-Fi module that communicates with an H.264 video compression chip (VGA resolution at 30 frames per second) over the SPI bus, a VGA camera and imaging sensor module, a motion detector, a single snapshot trigger button, a WPS/Provisioning button for easy set-up of the wireless network and mode indicator LEDs. The GainSpan embedded software running on the Wi-Fi module offers complete Wi-Fi functionality including the networking stack and services and wireless security. It supports mDNS/DNS-SD based device and service discovery that allows users to automatically discover and connect to the embedded video profile. In addition, it includes provisioning software that allows configuration of the Wi-Fi module in Limited AP or Client modes, and supports over-the-air firmware upgrades.

D&H Distributing's "Get Authorized" Program Makes Pricing Compliance More Convenient
HARRISBURG, Pa., May 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- D&H Distributing, the major North American computer products and consumer electronics distributor, introduces its new "Get Authorized" program for resellers. The "Get Authorized" tool reduces the time and labor of the vendor authorization process, which resellers and dealers must go through in order to buy products subject to MAP (minimum advertised pricing), UPP (unilateral pricing policy) and similar authorization restrictions.
Such policies have been instituted by manufacturers in order to keep product margins from dropping too dramatically due to aggressive pricing. VARs who wish to sell items covered by these guidelines must undergo a sometimes complex authorization process, which documents that the VAR agrees to be compliant. This usually requires the engagement of an account representative and can take hours or even days. Products frequently subject to authorization guidelines include displays, PCs, storage drives, and audio equipment.
With D&H's new tool, eligible resellers need only to click a "Get Authorized Now!" button at any point during an online product search or order, and the authorization process is approved instantly. VARs can view and print a list of the different items covered under each vendor authorization, plus other key policy details. D&H customers must sign up for the program at dandh.com.
"Our vendors have been asking us to help them manage their authorization programs, and at the same time, customers who want to sell their products under these guidelines have been asking us to make the process easier. We devised a totally automated and real-time time process that accommodates both the vendors' and customers' needs," said Jeff Davis, senior vice president of sales at D&H Distributing. "The 'Get Authorized' program makes it more convenient for VARs to be compliant, and simplifies access to a greater breadth of offerings."

Synaptics ClearPad® S7500 Brings Large, High-Performance Touchscreens to Mainstream Notebook PCs and Premium Tablets
Next Generation ClearPad Allows Ease-of-Integration and Extreme Flexibility to Support Continued Mobile Device Evolution
SANTA CLARA, Calif., May 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Synaptics Inc. (NASDAQ: SYNA), a leading developer of human interface solutions, today announced the ClearPad(®) S7500, the latest addition to Synaptics' industry-leading ClearPad line of clear capacitive touchscreen solutions. The ClearPad S7500 removes barriers to the adoption of large, high-performance touchscreens in today's mainstream notebook PCs and high-end tablets by offering a highly advanced, yet flexible and cost-effective, solution for screens up to 15.6".
To date, large capacitive touchscreens in notebooks and premium tablets have been difficult to implement, adding excess thickness, weight and cost to designs. However, as exciting new applications and operating systems, such as Windows 8 and 8.1, emerge with increasing focus on touch and pen capabilities, Synaptics eliminates these difficulties with a range of unique integration features only available with the ClearPad S7500.
ClearPad S7500 Key Benefits:
-- Extreme Performance. The advanced touch controller silicon architecture
and algorithms, along with high sensing channel count, enable the S7500
to provide the most accurate finger and small object detection on the
market, along with faster report rates and superior noise resistance.
-- Ultimate Flexibility. The S7500 accommodates a wide range of advanced
touch sensor technology stackups, such as On-Glass-Solution (OGS) and
Ultra-Thin Discrete, and is compatible with emerging sensor materials
like metal mesh. This flexibility allows OEMs to add touch to their
latest designs with little to no added thickness or weight, and
minimizing added component and manufacturing costs. This design
flexibility will support future generations as sensor technology
continues to evolve.
-- Active Stylus Tracking. Synaptics' active stylus technology enables
finely detailed drawing and writing without compromising industry
leading finger touch performance, and without the need for additional
sensor hardware in the computing device. The fine-tipped active stylus
supports advanced features such as hover detection and pressure
reporting to the host application, enabling very rich stylus usage
models without adding cost, thickness, or manufacturing complexity to
-- Robust Performance. Advanced algorithms enable robust and accurate
multitouch performance under a wide range of scenarios, such as in the
presence of moisture or with gloved fingers.
-- Easy Integration. A low-profile single-ASIC solution, the S7500 is
designed for simple integration with very small discrete component
requirements and minimal physical and electrical footprints. This also
affords lower power consumption and a reduced total bill of materials
"Capacitive touch has become the defacto human interface for today's small form factor computing devices like smartphones and tablets, but has seen slower integration in larger computing devices due to design challenges and high costs," said Kevin Barber, senior vice president and general manager, Smart Display Division (SDD), Synaptics. "With the introduction of the game changing ClearPad S7500, barriers are broken down, making it simple and cost-effective for OEMs to embrace the large touchscreen for a range of new computing devices and form factors."
To experience the ClearPad S7500, customers and suppliers are encouraged to contact their Synaptics partner to arrange a meeting time in Synaptics' private suite at Computex in Taipei from June 4-8, 2013 (Grand Hyatt Taipei, Suite 1141). Media are encouraged to contact email@example.com to arrange a meeting time.
The Synaptics ClearPad S7500 has been sampling since first quarter of 2013 supporting design efforts of PC and Mobile OEMs. These devices are expected to become available to consumers starting in third quarter of 2013.

LRS Announces MFPsecure(TM) Pull Printing Hardware and Software

The MFPsecure family of solutions will support output devices from a variety of hardware vendors, enabling customers with large, diverse printer fleets to save money and improve document security.
"We know that approximately 10 percent of all print jobs are never retrieved from the printer," said John Howerter, LRS Senior Vice President of Product Marketing. "These unclaimed documents are not only costly and wasteful, they also put sensitive information at risk. Our new MFPsecure solutions offer a seamless way of delivering any document, in any format, anywhere in the organization while simultaneously improving document security."
LRS is extending its MFPsecuresoftware to support Lexmark and Xerox hardware through embedded software agents designed to run natively on most modern multifunction print devices (MFPs). Similar to the recently-developed solution for HP devices, this solution leverages the MFP touchscreen interface to let users select their desired output options. All MFPsecure software also works with LRS' MFPsecure Card Reader hardware to provide proximity card-based user authentication.

Included in the solution are the MFPsecure Card Reader and an external controller interface box for device connectivity. This hardware extends the capabilities of the MFPsecure and VPSX(®) software solutions to single-function and specialty printers, allowing users to retrieve queued documents from a multitude of output devices.
"Our solution for HP devices generated a lot of interest last year, but most large organizations have equipment from multiple vendors," explains Brian Huggins, LRS Vice President of Product Development. "We are now expanding our embedded solutions to support Lexmark and Xerox hardware, and expect to announce support for Ricoh MFPs and other vendors in the coming months."

Dungeonland is Endlessly Entertaining in Infinite Dungeon Mode, Title Now on Mac
NEW YORK, May 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
Star System Added, New Trailer Released
Paradox Interactive and Critical Studio today released a mind-blowing free content
update for Dungeonland, including a new achievement-style Star System and Infinite Dungeon
mode-a never-ending level that challenges visitors to keep fighting and looting until they
die. Dungeonland is also now available on Mac.
Dungeonland is a cooperative action game that sends three players to a theme park just
for heroic adventurers, surviving relentless hordes of friendly staff and stealing loot
from all of the gift shops. Players can now make the game impossible to win for
themselves, and never again have to experience Dungeonland without the sweet release of a
gruesome death. The update also includes a new Casual Mode for terrified little infants,
and a Star System for heroes who complete actual challenges, plus a broad variety of
updates to Dungeon Maestro Mode, in which a fourth player can take on the role of
Dungeonland's handsomest and cleverest character behind the scenes.
Of their recent success, the studio had this to say:
"We embarked on an incredible adventure together, and if you had seen us three years
ago; a ragtag band of wannabes trying to make a huge game and release it worldwide, you
would probably have bet against us.
Since then our family has grown, we made a completely retarded game, released it on
Steam, made it to the platform's top 3 (the first Brazilian game to achieve this!), met a
lot of cool people, travelled around, made new friends, and most important of all: we have
seen people having fun with something we created!
There is definitely some magic involved in creating something for people to enjoy. We
have seen small kids playing Dungeonland with their parents, groups of friends laughing
and having a great time together, players overcoming the game's crushing difficulty, game
developers and students being inspired by what we did... and all of this will be a part of
the lives of all these people from now on. We are very humbled and thank you very much for
allowing a little piece of ourselves to be a part of your history."
Deals2Buy.com Monthly Deal Breaker Report: What to Buy During Memorial Day Weekend
AUSTIN, Texas, May 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Deals2Buy (http://www.deals2buy.com), a leading deals website for discounts and close-out inventory offers, today released the Memorial Day weekend edition of its monthly Deal Breaker Report, identifying the hottest deals available on Deals2Buy.com leading up to Memorial Day weekend.
Memorial Day weekend is often thought of as the unofficial start of summer, and according to a survey Deals2Buy recently conducted with The Omnibus Company (http://www.omnibus.com), consumer-purchasing plans during May reflect consumer excitement for summer to begin. This month, 1 in 5 (20%) consumers surveyed will book summer travel and another 29 percent are likely to buy new summer clothing during this time frame.
To kick-start their summer shopping, 79 percent of consumers surveyed typically seek out information about Memorial Day weekend sales to help them find the best deals. The top resources respondents use to find these sales are newspaper ads or circulars (37%), retailer websites (23%) and coupon websites (17%).
"We're encouraged to see that such a high percentage of consumers plan to take advantage of Memorial Day weekend sales, as May is a great time to get deep discounts on apparel, home goods and gym memberships," says Mike Spankie, senior merchandising manager of Deals2Buy.com. "However, there are some items you may want to hold off on while you're out and about shopping this weekend to avoid paying top dollar if you don't need the items right away."
With warmer weather here or just around the corner, 13 percent of consumers surveyed plan to purchase outdoor furniture in May, but this is when patio furniture and grill costs are at a premium.
"If you can wait, retailers will begin discounting summer seasonal items closer to July and August," adds Spankie.
Additionally, because May is graduation season and many new smartphones have been released onto the market, 17 percent of consumers surveyed plan to purchase consumer electronics in May through the beginning of June.
"I would caution that May is not typically when we see the deepest discounts on new electronics," says Spankie, "but if you're willing to buy an older model, you'll always get a cost benefit."
More than 4 in 5 (83%) consumers surveyed can name at least one electronic item that they would buy an older model of instead of the new version to save money. Laptops (60%), smartphones (56%) and cameras (51%) top this list. However, 17% of respondents are unwilling to purchase older model electronics even if it means they'd save money.
Consumers can visit Deals2Buy.com year-round for discounts on a variety of products and services, but they should act now to take advantage of the Memorial Day weekend deals below.
The survey was conducted by The Omnibus Company between May 2 and May 9, 2013, among 1,058 nationally representative Americans ages 18 and over, using an email invitation and an online survey. Quotas are set to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the entire U.S. population 18 and over. Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the number of interviews and the level of the percentages expressing the results. In this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3 percentage points from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample. The marge of error for any subgroups will be slightly higher.

Whirlpool Corporation Chairman and CEO Jeff Fettig Champions Next Big Opportunities to Positively Impact the Environment During Keynote Address at EE Global
BENTON HARBOR, Mich., May 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Jeff Fettig, chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE:WHR), discussed the company's environmental responsibility as the leader in the global home appliance industry during a keynote address at EE Global 2013 yesterday. The event concludes this afternoon in Washington, D.C.
Opening the plenary session on, "The Next Generation of Energy Efficiency: Driving Productivity through Investment, Modernization and Education," Fettig issued a call to action to the appliance industry, consumers and government agencies.
"Today, there are more than 860 million appliances in the U.S. This is a huge industry with a huge impact, which is why Whirlpool incorporates energy efficiency into everything we do. Every appliance we make is more energy efficient than the appliance we made a year ago, five years ago and 10 years ago," said Fettig.
Fettig emphasized that focusing on appliance replacement is our biggest opportunity in energy efficiency. As an example, a new washer today is 77 percent more efficient than one from the year 2000 and only costs $66 a year to run. Consumers who replace older models would save $117 a year. He also discussed the advantages of the company's new suite of smart appliances, which have the capability to "talk" to the electrical grid. These appliances can shift energy consumption to reduce impact during peak energy usage times.
"These approaches make sense for consumers by delivering on performance, being cost-effective and having a big impact on saving our precious natural resources," he said.
Fettig offered specific examples to illustrate how improvements in appliances are saving energy:
-- Refrigerators are bigger and have better features; yet they cost less to
buy and operate and are more energy efficient. A modern refrigerator
uses less energy than a 60-watt light bulb.
-- Front-load washing machines can hold 20 percent more laundry than they
did in the year 2000, yet they are 70 percent more efficient. Also,
today's washers use 26 fewer gallons of water than 13 years ago,
equaling 8,000 gallons saved per year.
-- If newer dishwasher models with heightened standards were in every home
in the U.S., it would save 270 billion gallons of water annually. Over
the lifetime of the products, that's enough water to fill more than 40
million Olympic swimming pools.
-- All the refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers and clothes washers shipped
to consumers last year will save 111 trillion kWh during their lifetime.
That's enough energy to power Washington, D.C. for 60 years.
After delivering his keynote, Fettig participated in a Q&A session with Kateri Callahan, president, Alliance to Save Energy, to further discuss how Whirlpool Corporation is leading in energy efficiency.
Fettig also discussed Whirlpool Corporation's history as a pioneer in environmental stewardship. The company helped draft the first ENERGY STAR appliance standards and was the first appliance manufacturer to announce greenhouse gas reduction targets, where it has seen a 12 percent reduction since 2003.
EE Global is hosted by the Alliance to Save Energy, a nonprofit coalition of business, government, environmental and consumer leaders. The event is expected to draw more than 500 attendees, exhibitors, speakers and media. Whirlpool Corporation is a founding sponsor of EE Global.
Whirlpool Corporation is the world's leading manufacturer and marketer of major home appliances, with annual sales of approximately $18 billion in 2012, 68,000 employees, and 65 manufacturing and technology research centers around the world. The company markets Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Amana, Brastemp, Consul, Bauknecht and other major brand names to consumers in nearly every country around the world. Startup Aims to Change the Way We See Brake Lights Forever
Device Senses and Indicates Perceptible Deceleration to Following Drivers
SAN DIEGO, May 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Vectolabs, LLC. is raising funds to launch their patent pending brake light system they believe will change the brake light forever. Dubbed the Adaptive Perceptible Deceleration Indicator (APDI) by engineers at this innovative company, the product is designed to reduce the risk of rear end collisions by enhancing visibility. An onboard accelerometer and microprocessor coupled with automotive grade LEDs alleviates 3 major deficiencies of current brake light systems:
-- Today's brake lights only appear when depressing the brakes. Down
shifting and engine braking slow your vehicle considerably although
brake lights never illuminate
-- Brake lights only indicate a driver is applying brakes without any
indication of the level of urgency
-- Driving distractions are on the rise and inattentive drivers might lose
precious time by failing to notice brake lights in front of them
Vectolabs' proprietary algorithm alerts following drivers to deceleration by any means; whether engine braking, downshifting or conventional braking. In addition, two levels of flashing distinguish between normal deceleration and emergency braking.
Vololights(TM) will be the branded product utilizing this technology in a motorcycle license plate frame. "Vololights revolutionizes motorcycle safety. With the ability to signal any method of deceleration in addition to alerting drivers how fast the rider is braking, Vololights could potentially reduce rear end collisions," said Ken Whalster. Ken knows a thing or two about motorcycles; he is a rider and President of BikeBandit.com, the largest online powersports distributors cataloging 8 million parts.
This breakthrough technology is being well received by some in the media. Vololights was featured in the popular Cycle World magazine as well as Gizmag.com. Autoevolution.com even declared, "Vololights is just amazing!"
The San Diego based start-up launched on the popular Kickstarter crowdfunding platform during May for Motorcycle Awareness Month. The funding will be used for production molds to target the motorcycle and scooter markets. Phase two will include multiple plate designs and eventually the company looks to adapt the technology to fleets and automobiles. "Following the company's mission to improve the lives of customers through unique and innovative products, we think motorcycle safety is a great place to start," said Faizal Ali, the company's co-founder and also an avid motorcyclist.

SAN FRANCISCO, May 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Tapjoy, Inc. (http://www.tapjoy.com), a leading mobile advertising and publishing platform, today released the "Redefining Virtual Currency" study, conducted by Yankee Group on behalf of Tapjoy, examining the current state of virtual rewards such as loyalty points, credit card points, airline miles, app-based virtual currencies and more. The study found that mobile consumers prefer to engage with advertisements, rather than paying money, as a means to receive virtual rewards and premium content. One out of five mobile device owners engages with advertising daily in exchange for virtual rewards and premium content, and nearly one in two does so at least monthly.
Alternative payment methods, such as advertising engagements and exchange of personal information, represent a rapidly growing segment of the virtual currency economy, which Yankee Group estimates to have been worth $47.5 billion in 2012 and projects to grow to $55.4 billion by 2017. Advertising engagements represent the fastest-growing segment of this virtual currency economy, projected to grow more than 200 percent to nearly $900 million by 2017.
"Yankee Group's report confirms that mobile is disrupting how consumers want and expect to receive virtual rewards and premium content," said Peter Dille, CMO, Tapjoy. "We expect this virtual currency model will continue to grow through mobile beyond games and into other types of content, such as music, print media and video content."
"Given sizable adoption rates and comfort levels, consumers are clearly expressing that they value virtual currencies, helping set the stage for continued growth," said Jordan McKee, analyst with Yankee Group and author of the whitepaper. "Mobile device owners have demonstrated that they're willing to interact with a brand by exchanging their time (ad-views) and personal data for free digital content. Since users choose to take part in this exchange, the engagement can be far more meaningful and powerful than pop-up, banner or television advertisements. Marketers that opt to leverage this model have the potential to realize robust engagement rates because their mobile audiences view the exchange as worthwhile."
The study also found other evidence of this growing trend, such as:
-- To Pay or Not to Pay: Roughly half of mobile users have paid for in-app
premium content (54 percent of smartphone users and 41 percent of tablet
users). However, when given the option of paying for content or
receiving the same content for free in exchange for advertising, both
smartphone users (67 percent to 39 percent) and tablet users (73 percent
to 46 percent) preferred engaging with advertising.
-- Free Digital Content is Worth Digital Engagement: Mobile device owners
want opportunities to engage with advertising to receive digital content
as much or more than physical content. Seventy-seven percent said they
would be willing to engage with ads to earn a tablet app. The next most
popular items were paperback books (75 percent), tablet in-app premium
content (73 percent) and music (73 percent) and smartphone in-app
premium content (67 percent).
-- Personal Information as the Emerging Virtual Currency: Mobile users
believe their personal information has value, and they are very willing
to share this personal information (such as their e-mail address) to
advertisers in exchange for virtual rewards and premium content. Many
mobile users are already doing so frequently, as 70 percent of
smartphone owners and 53 percent of tablet owners have willingly
provided personal information to advertisers to receive a paid download
of an app.
The study, conducted between February and May 2013, can be read in its entirety on Tapjoy.com or at http://tap.tj/l9hB1.

Wi-Ex Launches zBoost TRIO, a Product Finalist in the 2013 CTIA E-Tech Awards
ATLANTA, May 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Wi-Ex (http://www.wi-ex.com), a leading provider of cell phone signal booster kits, announced today the launch of its zBoost TRIO, a 2G, 3G and 4G cell phone signal booster kit. Showcased May 21 -23 at CTIA 2013 in booth 2225, the zBoost TRIO extends the indoor "cell zone" by boosting voice and data signals for multiple users enhancing the performance of consumers cell phones, smartphones, wireless data card and tablets. The carrier-specific zBoost TRIO cell phone signal booster kit combines 4G LTE or 4G AWS with 2G/3G Cellular and PCS into an easy to install cell phone signal booster kit that enhances signal and reduces dropped calls and choppy voice performance while increasing data speeds by 20 times.
"There is a need for a tri-band booster because most 4G capable devices drop to 3G while placing a call and use 4G for transmitting data. The zBoost TRIO improves voice and data coverage, solving both choppy voice calls and slow download speeds with one device, making it perfect for your home or office," says Frank Smith, director of sales and channel strategy at Wi-Ex.
The zBoost TRIO Kit improves indoor cell phone signal by capturing the outside signal, bringing it indoors and then enhancing and amplifying it to extend the "cell zone" in homes and offices up to 2500 square feet. The package includes everything you need: zBoost amplifier base unit, base unit antenna, power supply, coaxial cable (RG59-mini), signal antenna and mounting hardware. The wide radio wave beam width antenna receives signals from multiple cell towers. Due to the nature of LTE, the zBoost TRIO Kit is a carrier specific cell phone signal booster kit. Like all zBoost products, the zBoost TRIO protects the carrier network using patented technology, is easy to install (comes kit-complete) and "consumer-affordable." It was designed to comply with the recent FCC's procedural and technical rules adopted for consumer signal boosters. In addition, there is no cradle or connection to your phone.
"This rapid growth of corporate America's reliance on their smartphones and tablets -- and their workplace applications -- and the increase in teleworking, has created a need for IT managers to find ways to keep their teams connected with strong signals so they don't drop calls or data. The zBoost TRIO allows us to offer consumers and the professional consumer a single cell phone signal booster kit for 2G, 3G and 4G," said Sharon Cuppett, executive vice president of marketing at Wi-Ex. "We are excited to have CTIA again recognize us as a finalist in the CTIA E-Tech Awards and look forward to a great CTIA."

HGST Launches The Highest Capacity Hard Drive For The Mainstream Mobile Market
With the Highest Storage Density of Any Hard Drive Today, HGST Delivers 1.5TB Capacity in a Standard 2.5-inch 9.5mm Form Factor, Targeting Notebooks, External Hard Drives, Gaming Consoles and All-in-one Desktop PCs
SAN JOSE, Calif., May 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --HGST (formerly Hitachi Global Storage Technologies and now a Western Digital company, NASDAQ: WDC) continues to push technology innovation by offering the highest storage density (MB/mm(3)) of any hard disk drive (HDD) today. The new Travelstar® 5K1500 is the industry's first 9.5mm, 1.5TB mobile hard drive and features the industry's highest capacity in a standard 9.5mm design. Built on HGST's proven platform for quality and reliability, the Travelstar 5K1500 delivers high shock protection, low power and solid performance to meet the growing demands for a variety of market segments, including notebooks, external hard drives, gaming consoles and all-in-one desktop PCs.
The HGST three-platter Travelstar 5K1500 offers 50 percent more capacity than currently shipping 1TB 2.5-inch 9.5mm HDDs and 200 percent more capacity than single-disk 500GB 7mm or 5mm 2.5-inch HDDs, making them ideal for capacity-hungry devices. With better PCMark® Vantage and PCMark 7 performance than currently shipping two-platter HGST 5,400RPM models, all Travelstar 5K1500 drives ship with a 32MB cache buffer and 6Gbps SATA interface.
Smaller than current 15mm or 12.5mm 2.5-inch HDDs, the Travelstar 5K1500 drive features a standard 9.5mm form factor for simple integration into many traditional system designs. This allows OEMs and system integrators to take advantage of its huge capacity, 0.5 watt low power idle and 5,400RPM performance to deliver new high-capacity, power-efficient systems for longer battery life in notebooks and other unplugged applications. With only 2.5 bels idle, the 1.5TB Travelstar 5K1500 drive is also whisper quiet. The new Travelstar 5K1500 family offers the best operating shock at 400G/2ms and non-operating shock at 1000G/1ms to protect against bumps and rough handling in mobile environments. A dual stage actuator is included for track miss registration improvements for greater data integrity and reliability. All Travelstar drives use halogen-free components to support the "green" computing initiatives that are of increasing importance to today's end users.
"Contrary to popular belief, the mobile hard drive market is not being replaced by SSDs. We continue to invest in and serve both the traditional 9.5mm and 7mm thin and light HDD mobile markets as they offer the best cost-per-GB, performance and proven product reliability for high-capacity, mainstream, Ultrabook® and A/V content creation notebook markets," said Brendan Collins, vice president of product marketing at HGST. "HGST continues to have a strong share in the 2.5-inch market and the new Travelstar 5K1500 hard drive is the latest addition to our broad line of 5,400 and 7,200 RPM 2.5-inch drives, giving OEMs, ODMs and integrators an opportunity to grow and differentiate their product lines."
"The PC continues to be an important productivity platform for content creators, who represent an echelon of users that value high-capacity portable storage," said John Rydning, research vice president for hard disk drives at IDC. "HGST's new mobile 1.5TB hard disk drive in a standard form factor for notebook PCs provides the highest capacity solution available today for users seeking more storage capacity inside their notebook PC."
The new 1.5TB Travelstar 5K1500 is also available in an Enhanced Availability (EA) model, which brings together a host of features such as high capacity, durability and low power for blade servers, network routers, video surveillance and other systems needing 24x7 access to data. The Travelstar 5K1500 drive helps system designers, integrators and IT managers build and maintain their storage systems, achieving greater storage density in the same 2.5-inch footprint, while maximizing performance, and improving data integrity in "always-on" applications in lower-transaction environments.
Travelstar 5K1500 drives are expected to ship in June. The EA model, and the optional self-encrypting Travelstar 5K1500 model, which is designed to meet the Trusted Computer Group (TCG) Opal Storage Security specification, are expected to be available in 3Q 2013.

AUSTIN, Texas, May 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- National Instruments (Nasdaq: NATI) today announced its newest general-purpose programmable power supplies, which offer the highest power density available in PXI and form the foundation of automated test systems. The NI PXIe-4112 and NI PXIe-4113 modules provide high power density that saves rack space while simplifying design by eliminating the need to mix multiple instrumentation form factors. When programmed with NI LabVIEW software and paired with a range of PXI hardware instrumentation, the new power supplies can help engineers create a complete, customized test solution.
"With the capability of these new programmable power supplies, PXI demonstrates yet again its unique value in building automated test and benchtop validation systems," said Charles Schroeder, NI director of test systems. "When engineers combine NI PXI hardware with LabVIEW, they simplify their programming experience and quickly gain access to the latest technology - all within a thriving ecosystem. Engineers incorporating these latest technologies into their automated test systems have technical and time-to-market advantages over those using legacy box instrument approaches."
The new programmable power supplies are ideal for a range of applications from aerospace and defense to automotive and component test. These modules feature two 60 W power supply channels in a single PXI Express slot. The NI PXIe-4112 power supply features 60 V at 1 A per channel and the NI PXIe-4113 power supply offers 10 V at 6 A per channel. The two channels can be combined to create a single 120 W channel. To easily synchronize measurements, engineers can combine the power supplies with more than 1,500 PXI modular instruments ranging from digital multimeters to RF analyzers and generators, and simply trigger the instruments across the PXI chassis backplane.
Engineers can quickly take measurements using soft front panels with an interactive user interface or build fully automated applications using the LabVIEW example programs that come with the power supplies. There are example programs to perform voltage sweeps, source DC current and source DC power. With seamless LabVIEW integration, engineers dramatically reduce development time while improving system scalability for a range of applications.
