Memorial Day weekend is often thought of as the unofficial start of summer, and according to a survey Deals2Buy recently conducted with The Omnibus Company (http://www.omnibus.com), consumer-purchasing plans during May reflect consumer excitement for summer to begin. This month, 1 in 5 (20%) consumers surveyed will book summer travel and another 29 percent are likely to buy new summer clothing during this time frame.
To kick-start their summer shopping, 79 percent of consumers surveyed typically seek out information about Memorial Day weekend sales to help them find the best deals. The top resources respondents use to find these sales are newspaper ads or circulars (37%), retailer websites (23%) and coupon websites (17%).
"We're encouraged to see that such a high percentage of consumers plan to take advantage of Memorial Day weekend sales, as May is a great time to get deep discounts on apparel, home goods and gym memberships," says Mike Spankie, senior merchandising manager of Deals2Buy.com. "However, there are some items you may want to hold off on while you're out and about shopping this weekend to avoid paying top dollar if you don't need the items right away."
With warmer weather here or just around the corner, 13 percent of consumers surveyed plan to purchase outdoor furniture in May, but this is when patio furniture and grill costs are at a premium.
"If you can wait, retailers will begin discounting summer seasonal items closer to July and August," adds Spankie.
Additionally, because May is graduation season and many new smartphones have been released onto the market, 17 percent of consumers surveyed plan to purchase consumer electronics in May through the beginning of June.
"I would caution that May is not typically when we see the deepest discounts on new electronics," says Spankie, "but if you're willing to buy an older model, you'll always get a cost benefit."
More than 4 in 5 (83%) consumers surveyed can name at least one electronic item that they would buy an older model of instead of the new version to save money. Laptops (60%), smartphones (56%) and cameras (51%) top this list. However, 17% of respondents are unwilling to purchase older model electronics even if it means they'd save money.
Consumers can visit Deals2Buy.com year-round for discounts on a variety of products and services, but they should act now to take advantage of the Memorial Day weekend deals below.

The survey was conducted by The Omnibus Company between May 2 and May 9, 2013, among 1,058 nationally representative Americans ages 18 and over, using an email invitation and an online survey. Quotas are set to ensure reliable and accurate representation of the entire U.S. population 18 and over. Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the number of interviews and the level of the percentages expressing the results. In this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3 percentage points from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample. The marge of error for any subgroups will be slightly higher.

BENTON HARBOR, Mich., May 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Jeff Fettig, chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE:WHR), discussed the company's environmental responsibility as the leader in the global home appliance industry during a keynote address at EE Global 2013 yesterday. The event concludes this afternoon in Washington, D.C.
Opening the plenary session on, "The Next Generation of Energy Efficiency: Driving Productivity through Investment, Modernization and Education," Fettig issued a call to action to the appliance industry, consumers and government agencies.
"Today, there are more than 860 million appliances in the U.S. This is a huge industry with a huge impact, which is why Whirlpool incorporates energy efficiency into everything we do. Every appliance we make is more energy efficient than the appliance we made a year ago, five years ago and 10 years ago," said Fettig.
Fettig emphasized that focusing on appliance replacement is our biggest opportunity in energy efficiency. As an example, a new washer today is 77 percent more efficient than one from the year 2000 and only costs $66 a year to run. Consumers who replace older models would save $117 a year. He also discussed the advantages of the company's new suite of smart appliances, which have the capability to "talk" to the electrical grid. These appliances can shift energy consumption to reduce impact during peak energy usage times.
"These approaches make sense for consumers by delivering on performance, being cost-effective and having a big impact on saving our precious natural resources," he said.
Fettig offered specific examples to illustrate how improvements in appliances are saving energy:
-- Refrigerators are bigger and have better features; yet they cost less to
buy and operate and are more energy efficient. A modern refrigerator
uses less energy than a 60-watt light bulb.
-- Front-load washing machines can hold 20 percent more laundry than they
did in the year 2000, yet they are 70 percent more efficient. Also,
today's washers use 26 fewer gallons of water than 13 years ago,
equaling 8,000 gallons saved per year.
-- If newer dishwasher models with heightened standards were in every home
in the U.S., it would save 270 billion gallons of water annually. Over
the lifetime of the products, that's enough water to fill more than 40
million Olympic swimming pools.
-- All the refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers and clothes washers shipped
to consumers last year will save 111 trillion kWh during their lifetime.
That's enough energy to power Washington, D.C. for 60 years.
After delivering his keynote, Fettig participated in a Q&A session with Kateri Callahan, president, Alliance to Save Energy, to further discuss how Whirlpool Corporation is leading in energy efficiency.

(http://www.tapjoy.com), a leading mobile advertising and publishing platform, today released the "Redefining Virtual Currency" study, conducted by Yankee Group on behalf of Tapjoy, examining the current state of virtual rewards such as loyalty points, credit card points, airline miles, app-based virtual currencies and more. The study found that mobile consumers prefer to engage with advertisements, rather than paying money, as a means to receive virtual rewards and premium content. One out of five mobile device owners engages with advertising daily in exchange for virtual rewards and premium content, and nearly one in two does so at least monthly.
Alternative payment methods, such as advertising engagements and exchange of personal information, represent a rapidly growing segment of the virtual currency economy, which Yankee Group estimates to have been worth $47.5 billion in 2012 and projects to grow to $55.4 billion by 2017. Advertising engagements represent the fastest-growing segment of this virtual currency economy, projected to grow more than 200 percent to nearly $900 million by 2017.
"Yankee Group's report confirms that mobile is disrupting how consumers want and expect to receive virtual rewards and premium content," said Peter Dille, CMO, Tapjoy. "We expect this virtual currency model will continue to grow through mobile beyond games and into other types of content, such as music, print media and video content."

The study also found other evidence of this growing trend, such as:
-- To Pay or Not to Pay: Roughly half of mobile users have paid for in-app
premium content (54 percent of smartphone users and 41 percent of tablet
users). However, when given the option of paying for content or
receiving the same content for free in exchange for advertising, both
smartphone users (67 percent to 39 percent) and tablet users (73 percent
to 46 percent) preferred engaging with advertising.
-- Free Digital Content is Worth Digital Engagement: Mobile device owners
want opportunities to engage with advertising to receive digital content
as much or more than physical content. Seventy-seven percent said they
would be willing to engage with ads to earn a tablet app. The next most
popular items were paperback books (75 percent), tablet in-app premium
content (73 percent) and music (73 percent) and smartphone in-app
premium content (67 percent).
-- Personal Information as the Emerging Virtual Currency: Mobile users
believe their personal information has value, and they are very willing
to share this personal information (such as their e-mail address) to
advertisers in exchange for virtual rewards and premium content. Many
mobile users are already doing so frequently, as 70 percent of
smartphone owners and 53 percent of tablet owners have willingly
provided personal information to advertisers to receive a paid download
of an app.

With only 2.5 bels idle, the 1.5TB Travelstar 5K1500 drive is also whisper quiet. Toshiba to Start Mass Production of Next Generation NAND Flash Memory
To Supply the World's Smallest 64-gigabit NAND Memory Chip on Second Generation 19 Nanometer (nm) Process Technology
TOKYO and IRVINE, Calif., May 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba Corporation and Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc., (TAEC)*, a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, today announced that the company has developed second generation 19 nanometer process technology that it will apply to mass production of 2-bit-per-cell 64 gigabit NAND memory chips later this month.
Toshiba has used the new generation technology to develop the world's smallest(*) 2-bit -per-cell 64 gigabit NAND memory chips, with an area of only 94 square millimeters. Using a unique high speed writing method, the next generation chips can achieve a write speed of up to 25 megabytes a second - the world's fastest class(*) in 2-bit-per-cell chips.
Toshiba is also developing 3-bit-per-cell chips by using this process technology and aims to start mass production in the second quarter of this fiscal year. The company will initially introduce 3-bit, multi-level-cell products for smartphones and tablets by developing a controller compatible with eMMC, and will subsequently extend application to notebook PCs by developing a controller compliant with solid state drives (SSD).
