These additional features are designed to improve situational awareness by helping manage the massive quantity of video and other data that military and government agencies receive every day.
FAME is a collaborative platform that provides video, audio and metadata coding, video analytics and archive capabilities within a unified digital asset management solution. Using the FAME architecture, Harris has developed additional features to provide intelligence analysts and warfighters with better access to higher-resolution full-motion video, motion imagery and visual imagery.
Integrating crossover technologies from Harris commercial and government businesses, Harris has been able to dramatically reduce the time required to get multimedia, situational awareness information into the hands of military commanders and other decision-makers. At the 2010 NAB Show, Harris is unveiling new features that utilize the FAME platform, including a number of new software applications for use as intelligence tools.
Harris is introducing a powerful add-on capability to its FAME asset management architecture to support "event-based correlation" of media and other sources of intelligence within the architecture. This new add-on will significantly enhance military users' ability to associate media and intelligence information to solve complex problems across a wide variety of data sources.

Advanced Graphics Technology Improves Usefulness of Geospatial Data
Also new is the Harris Media Collaborator, which provides both traditional broadcast and military customers with advanced telestration and tracking capability, as well as access to additional information-bearing graphics to the entire motion imagery process. In addition, Harris has integrated a Flash reporting tool into the FAME architecture, which automates the fusion of video, rich graphics and metadata into a Flash video for dissemination to end users.
Other enhancements include an enterprise-enabled FAME solution, which has been implemented using virtualization technologies. This greatly reduces the hardware footprint, simplifies deployment and reduces support and maintenance overhead -- resulting in significantly lower, overall life cycle costs.
Harris also has developed a geospatial-enabled multiviewer to work with the FAME platform. This multiviewer enables military command centers to link content with geospatial data to make it more useful and contextual, as well as view multiple displays of inputs in a common viewing environment. In addition, a highly scalable, IP-enabled graphics stream processing solution allows the creation of evolved video feeds in the compressed domain. These capabilities extend the reach of the FAME architecture from the sensor to the warfighter with a lower profile and footprint, making it much more user friendly in mobile/forward-deployed locations.

Verizon and Motorola to Trial Energy-Efficient Set-Top Box With Double the Storage Capacity for Digital Video Recordings
NEW YORK and HORSHAM, Pa., April 14 -- Verizon and the Mobile Devices and Home business of Motorola Inc. have teamed up to create and trial set-top boxes that are up to 30 percent more energy efficient than current models, with one new model offering double the amount of storage capacity for digital video recordings.
Verizon will begin trialing the two new models, the Motorola QIP7232 and Motorola QIP7100, in select FiOS TV markets later this year. The QIP7232, the DVR model, boasts a faster processor and more memory.
"The new green Motorola set-tops are an outgrowth of Verizon's efforts to create our own industry-leading energy-efficiency standards and to grow our business responsibly," said James Gowen, chief sustainability officer for Verizon. "These set-tops will provide a better viewing and multimedia experience for our customers, while helping them lower their energy consumption and utility bills."
The new Motorola QIP set-tops use environmentally preferred materials that do not contain lead, cadmium, mercury or other substances of concern. Packaging for the new set-tops will be 100 percent recyclable and made from 75 percent recycled cardboard.

Verizon Leverages Powerful Network to Deliver Massive Volumes of Traffic for Content Owners, Aggregators
Content Delivery Puts Verizon at Heart of Growth, Performance of Internet Industry
BASKING RIDGE, N.J., April 14 -- Internet and video content owners and content aggregators are increasingly looking to Verizon's expansive global network to leverage their success, pumping massive amounts of data across the network. Their content is now flowing at up to half a terabyte of data per second directly onto the Verizon network, speeding delivery and improving quality for end users.
"Content delivery is one of the most exciting and growing applications leveraging Verizon's global IP network," said Ihab Tarazi, vice president of global network planning for Verizon.
Much of the increased traffic attracted to the Verizon network has been via Verizon's Partner Port Program, which provides faster connections and delivery of content when compared with traditional peering-based delivery systems.
The program, launched just over a year ago and offered in the U.S., is a concentrated effort to draw content onto the Verizon network via direct connections with content owners' servers at content delivery access points located around the country. The direct links allow content owners and aggregators to bypass the traditional "peering" delivery system that involves multiple connections, or "hops," over several networks and causes latency and quality issues for data delivery to end users.
The Partner Port Program is utilized by a number of individual content companies as well as content aggregators that offer content delivery services to end users. The direct link between content servers and the Verizon global IP network means that Internet content directed to the homes of Verizon's and other ISPs' customers is quickly delivered, improving the performance quality of the delivery network and the customer experience.
"Facilitating great performance of Internet services makes Verizon a key component of growth and performance in the Internet industry," said Tarazi. "To facilitate this growing appetite for content, we have invested in an Internet superhighway infrastructure that recognizes content providers' needs, including 10 gigabit Ethernet on-ramps for customer access, with enhanced capabilities enabled by IPv6 throughout the network."
He added: "We have active plans to scale this infrastructure with a 100 gigabit Ethernet backbone in the very near future. We also are expanding these capabilities to the Verizon IP networks in Europe and Asia to provide a truly global offering for content delivery via the highly interconnected Verizon global IP network, and expect to make an announcement about an international opportunity soon."
The network expansion deployment will be further leveraged to enable Verizon to utilize network capacity to deliver managed content services to direct Verizon customers. The content delivery infrastructure that is currently in place is being expanded to support customer requirements, regardless of customers' broadband access.

National Semiconductor's Audio/Video Clock Generator Eliminates Need for External Clock Conditioning
Highly Integrated LMH1983 Replaces Multiple VCXOs and PLLs to Simplify System Clock Design in Broadcast Video Equipment
SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 14 -- A new triple-rate (3G/HD/SD) audio/video clock generator from National Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE:NSM) eliminates the need for external clock conditioning in professional and broadcast video equipment. The LMH1983 produces all the major video and audio reference clocks required for a broad range of applications. The highly integrated LMH1983 also provides the industry's lowest-output jitter (40 ps peak-to-peak), enabling Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) compliance using field-programmable gate array (FPGA) SerDes transceivers.
The LMH1983 replaces three external phase-lock loops (PLLs), voltage-controlled crystal oscillators (VCXOs) and loop filters to simplify design, reduce bill of materials (BOM) cost and conserve board area. It generates four simultaneous low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) clocks with dedicated top-of-frame timing pulses, providing a "plug-and-play" solution with minimal FPGA programming. The LMH1983 also eliminates the time-consuming PLL tweaking, required with discrete A/V clock generator implementations, accelerating time to market. The LMH1983 supports SMPTE serial digital interface (SDI) video and digital audio AES3/EBU standards for 1080p high-definition (HD) video cameras and video capture, conversion, processing, editing and distribution equipment.
For video processing and format converter cards, the LMH1983 simultaneously provides the SMPTE 424M system clocks (148.5 MHz and 148.5/1.001 MHz) required by the latest generation of FPGAs. For broadcast studios that "genlock" video equipment, the LMH1983 generates a synchronized high-frequency clock at the digital pixel rate phase-locked to the horizontal and vertical timing signals of the reference video signal. For applications that embed the audio signal or remove it from the video signal, the LMH1983 generates synchronous audio and video clocks locked to the video reference signal.

Offered in a 40-pin LLP® package, the LMH1983's dual-stage PLL architecture integrates four PLLs with three on-chip voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs). It creates simultaneous SD video, HD video (2x) and audio clocks from any of the following compatible references: H/V sync from National's LMH1981 video sync separator outputs, recovered H/V syncs from an SDI stream or a 27 MHz clock source. The LMH1983 features automatic input format detection, digital frequency holdover on loss of reference and simple programming of multiple A/V output formats, as well as genlock or digital free-run modes.
The LMH1983 recognizes HVF syncs for the major video standards and 27 MHz, 10 MHz and 32/44.1/48/96 kHz audio word clocks. It includes an I2C compatible bus interface for programming device registers and reading device status. The LMH1983 operates from a 3.3V supply and features power efficient operation. Each PLL can be independently powered on/off to conserve system power.

DALLAS, April 14 -- Today, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE:TXN) extends the range of its DM36x DaVinci generation of portable encoding solutions to support full HD 1080p H.264 encoding with the new TMS320DM368 video processor. The DM368 is well suited for many video-based applications, including HD video cameras, real-time digital video recorders (DVRs), HD video communications systems and digital signage. Besides support for higher video resolutions, customers also benefit from a more than 40 percent boost in ARM performance enabling advanced application programming interfaces (APIs) for high definition (HD) video processing and sophisticated user experiences. The DM368 provides multi-format HD video, including VC1, MPEG2, MPEG4, MJPEG and H.264 up to 1080p at 30 frames per second (fps) encoding.
