SCO has been locked in bitter legal battles with both IBM and Novell over Unix copyright issues. Those battles haven't gone all that well for the company recently.

In 2007 Zhong Lin Wang, a materials scientist at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, US, developed a generator composed of a forest of piezoelectric zinc oxide nanowires topped by a flat conductive plate. As the plate is pushed down, the wires bend, producing a voltage that induces current to flow into the plate. Now Wang has turned this idea into an electricity-generating thread, which he plans to weave into a fabric. His team figured out how to grow the nanowires on a strand of Kevlar fibre instead of a flat surface, so that the wires stick out from the fibre like the bristles on a pipe-cleaner.

The charter and legal framework for an office within the Homeland Security Department that would use overhead and mapping imagery from existing satellites is in the final stage of completion, according to a department official who requested anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly about it. The future of this program is likely to come up Wednesday when Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff goes to Capitol Hill to talk about his department's spending plan. Last fall, senior Democrats on the House Homeland Security Committee asked the department to put the program on hold until there was a clear legal framework of how the program would operate. This request came during an ongoing debate over the rules governing eavesdropping on phone calls and e-mails of suspected terrorists inside the United States.

SOYO was established in 1999 at the time when computer hardware was easy to list off in your head. Their Dragon series of motherboards were excellent and many enthusiasts employed their boards for computer builds. Today, SOYO is a vastly different company. enthusiasts know that water is inherently better than air when it comes to cooling our nuclear powered rigs. This is primarily due to water's capability to hold and transport more heat than air within the same volume of space. It is this property that has long allured users to take the plunge and stick water inside their machine regardless of the dangers. It is these same dangers that have kept water cooling on the fringe of mainstream acceptance. No one wants to deal with the reality of coming home to a dead machine only to realize the cause of the untimely demise was a leak in their water cooling loop. And so company after company has sought to solve this problem and devise a system so easy, a system so fool proof that it could rival the ease of air cooling while maintaining the benefits of water cooling. Not an easy feat to be sure. Enter Thermaltake, a company dedicated to cooling since 1999. With their vast amount of experience and R&D resources they stand ready to bri! ng water cooling to the mainstream.

Because the planet crosses the face of its parent star as seen from Earth, some starlight is periodically filtered through the planet's atmosphere, where different chemicals absorb particular wavelengths. The observations confirm an earlier tentative detection of water vapour and reveal the presence of methane gas.

And that's just what concerns people at the Center for Democracy and Technology. * Spread checkpoints and background writer autotuning, which reduce the impact of checkpoints on response times
* Asynchronous commit option for much faster response times on some transactions

There is no shortage of TV tuners designed for laptop users from many desktop TV tuner manufactures. They come in different shapes and forms and connects through laptops via USB, ExpressCard, and PCMCIA. Despite the fact that the PCMCIA is quickly being phased out in laptops and is being replaced by the ExpressCard, you can still find some of these cards on the market specially for the old analog tuners. Whicheve card you choose ultimately depends on what expansion slots you have in your system.

Another concern cited by hardware companies was a fear that their products would be damaged.

Bruce Tonkin recused himself from the discussion and dropped off the call during the discussion of items 5 & 6 due to potential conflict of interest. Kurt Pritz indicated that tasting is a practice that has grown over the years and that many recent discussions and writings demonstrate that the Board is already well versed on the related issues. Kurt indicated that ICANN has collected some information that a few parties have taken the practice to its logical conclusion, and operate exclusively on this model - deleting as much as 95.5% of names registered within the five-day grace period. Others exercise degrees of restraint. There are a spread percentage of names deleted in the grace period across all registrars that ranges from 0% to 99.5%. ICANN has had many discussions and consultations on this issue. It was proposed that ICANN charged a transaction fee on add-grace deletes in the 2004-2005 budget but there was substantial criticism that such a fee would be de-facto policy making by ICANN staff. Recently the GNSO voted to recommend that staff take action to change its transaction fee to change in for tasting deletes. If ICANN changed transaction fee in this manner, most think practice would cease. The vote represents Supporting Organization policy support for alternative budget.

The ATi Radeon Rage Fury MAX is one example and we all remember NVIDIA's first attempt, the GeForce 7950 GX2. The whole card design is loads better than the GX2 we saw from NVIDIA in 2006 which was literally two separate PCBs connected by a little bridge. Ultimately though it doesn't matter what the card looks like, it comes down to how it performs and that's something we're going to be looking at in just a moment.

During my time here at Bjorn3D it seems like many of the reviews we have done have been power supplies. As mentioned in another review 2007 was 'The Year of the Power Supply'. Either way, as long as manufacturers keep producing this level of quality, keep them coming. The Ultra 750W X2 Extreme delivers power, low noise and a mirror. That's right, I said a mirror. Ok, so it is a 'titanium' case that, when you look at it, you can see yourself, a mirror. It is also completely modular down to the 24 pin power connector for the motherboard. Will this power supply have the power and efficiency a computer so requires? Let's find out.

The HIS Radeon 3870 X2 combines the power of two ATI RV670 GPUs into one to reach for the performance throne in single card processing power. Even tough the implementation has some minor limitations the overall product is certainly interesting and can maybe bring AMD back in the game.

Obviously, anything you can put into that PCIe slot to update the on-board video is going to give you a boost, the MSI NX8600GT Twin Turbo is not only going to do that, its going to do it while keeping those all important big bills in your savings account. nVidia has been king of the high end market space for some time now, and the midrange has been going their way as well. When they have cards such as the NX8600GT Twin Turbo being put out by Manufacturers such as MSI in this case, its no wonder.

It's been more than a year since the first DirectX 10 graphics accelerator, containing the revolutionary G80, was presented to the public. Everyone should remember the delight it brought and the incredible performance which left all high-end competition in the dust. This time, we have a graphics card with the G92 chip on it, but the card is not from the 9xxx series as you might assume. The G92 is a carefully designed, polished version of the G80. Models based on this chip are named 8800GT and, should they appear in appropriate quantities, are bound to become very popular.

Samsung is known for producing some of the most gorgeous LCD monitors this world has ever seen. Walk into just about any home theater that has been equipped with a larger Samsung LCD television and you'll be blown away by the vibrant colors, the crystal-clear resolution, and the crispness of the contrast. The same can be said about the LCD monitors that the company puts out for computers and one of the latest in the long line of monitors is the Samsung SyncMaster 2232GW.

X38 based motherboards are soon to take a nose dive in price since the chipset is due to be replaced as the enthusiast offering by the X48 which we have already managed to get our hands on and test in both DDR2 and DDR3 flavours.

Sapphire's new HD 3870 Atomic Edition is a special version of the Radeon HD 3870 with a single slot cooler. This is only possible because Sapphire uses a new cooling technology called Vapor-X cooling that improves cooling performance considerably while keeping noise down. Another plus of this card is that it comes overclocked out of the box with full warranty.

Back in June of 2005 with the ATI Linux 8.14.13 driver release was a new installer to more easily facilitate the installation of this binary graphics driver using a graphical interface for a generic setup or generating distribution-specific packages (at that time Red Hat was the only officially supported distribution). With time, this installer has evolved by gaining new features and more distributions are being supported through their --buildpkg command for generating custom driver packages. These packaging scripts are now even hosted in the open for more community interaction. With two new driver options that will be formally introduced next month in Ubuntu's packaging scripts for the Catalyst 8.02 Linux driver, the installation process of the ATI fglrx driver on Ubuntu will become several steps easier.

We've seen high-end mice for a while now, with most gamers either opting for a Razer or Logitech branded mouse to do their fragging. SteelSeries have recently added a third vendor to the list with their Ikari Laser mouse, which I have here ready to be put through its paces. Featuring the usual on-the-fly sensitivity and multiple buttons, it'll have to shine to beat away the already well know competition.

Logitech has recently announced a new product in its line of gaming mice. According to the odd numbering tradition, it has been named G9. The well-balanced design is coupled with several engineering, technical, and design innovations. Let's review them one by one.

So it's easy; we have the HD 3870 X2 in our hands, it's tested and that's probably all that really matters. We're going to have a quick look at the package that MSI have put together, a look over the specifications and then we'll get straight into the benchmarks. As far as features go we've got a pretty good line-up; HDMI support, PCI Express 2.0 (but backwards compatible), Dual GPU with Quad GPU support coming and a pre-overclock.

If you don't have enough room to support their Ultra-120, Thermalright has introduce a new cooler for the space challenged called the Ultima-90. The Ultima-90 looks a lot like the Ultra-120 Extreme but in a smaller package. And that is just what it is. Some may be quick to rush to the conclusion that a smaller heatsink would lead to a large decrease in cooling performance. But the guys at Thermalright say different. We are going to take it around the block to see for ourselves.

Enter the Tuniq Miniplant, a 950 watt power supply that is aimed at those who want that extra kick for a performance level system. There are, however, many high-end power supplies currently on the market so our goal is to help you determine if this product is capable of putting out quality power in your own system. This particular unit produced some of the highest voltage levels I have ever seen. Though nothing is at a range that would be detrimental, rest assured that you will have power to spare with this beast. Add to this the standard sized footprint and we have ourselves a very impressive power supply.

This is really tough to draw a conclusion on this PSU as we are currently unsure if we have a faulty unit, or if the X2 Titanium is just not that good of a PSU. While it looks fantastic, has modular connections and is quiet, all of this is like gold plating cattle manure if it can't provide you with a solid running system.

Are you running out of power? I am taking a look at the ToughPower 1500Watt power supply from Thermaltake. My first thoughts before testing this huge PSU was to find second job to pay the electric bill, but it seems that the ToughPower 1500Watt PSU is very power effecient. The cables are all modular (apart from the main atx power cable) which is great seeing you would only have to connect those needed to run your system instead of having to tie down all the access cables which you dont use. Some say size does matter, well in this case it's true. A normal PSU has a length of about 16cm, the ToughPower 1500Watt takes up 20cm. Will it fit in a case?

Just as we predicted some time ago that the Radeon HD 2600XT Dual is going to open the portal to the multi-GPU development, it is coming true. The very next step ATI has made shows a huge advancement compared to the one-month old newborn. Ladies and gentlemen, we present you with ATI Radeon HD 3870X2 graphics card. For now, this is the best graphics card in the entire market and the most complete choice one can get for his/her money. As the author of these lines would gladly carry this baby home, the award we will give this card is fully deserved.

Diamond Multimedia doubled the on-board GDDR3 memory from 256MB to 512MB on the Diamond Radeon HD 3850 512MB Ruby Edition Video Card, which should significantly help frame buffer performance in gaming, but that isn't all they did. They also tossed the old single slot cooler and went with a larger and improved cooling system that lowered temperatures across the board. To top it all off they designed their own PCB! As you can see, Diamond went back to the drawing board and came up with a video card that should impress most of the ATI fans out there...

The Foxconn X38A is interesting because it combines two contradictions: being a top motherboard and being fit for memory upgrades. Both types of products have been manufactured for a long time already. But we cannot recall somebody trying to combine them.
Quote
The Foxconn X38A motherboard offers everything you could want out of an Intel X38 Express chipset based board. After you get past all the standard X38 features such as dual Lan, HD audio, PCIe-Gen 2.0, the board goes the extra mile of adding in dual ram compatibility. This lets you take advantage of great DDR2 prices right now, with the added piece of mind of future upgradeability when DDR3 prices stabilize. When you factor in that this comes at no apparent cost to performance, you can't really ask for more...

And since there are still uses for it, the memory guys are still designing and building new DDR2 memory modules, treating us to lower latencies and higher frequencies than previously available at ridiculously low prices.

The default speed on the stock 3870 video card is 775MHz for the core and 2.25GHz for the memory, but HIS has this card's speeds set much higher. The core speed on the HIS HD 3870 IceQ 3 Turbo 512MB GDDR4 Video Card is 850MHz and the 512MBs of GDDR4 256 bit memory is 2.38GHz DDR. It comes with 320 stream processing units for vertex, pixel and geometry data, 16 texture units, 16 raster operators, the pixel fill rate is approx. 13.4 GPixels/sec and the memory bandwidth is 76GB/s. The bill also would hang an unspoken threat over the heads of university administrators. In response to concerns that potential penalties for universities could include a loss of federal student aid funding, the MPAA's top lawyer in Washington said that federal funds should be at risk when copyright infringement happens on campus networks. Moreover, earlier versions of "Campus-based Digital Theft Prevention" proposals nakedly sought to make schools that received numerous copyright infringement notices subject to review by the US Secretary of Education.

It started out on the social news website Reddit, where a link to a really slow SQL query was posted. While the Reddit users were trying to kill the RIAA server, someone allegedly decided to up the ante and wipe the site's entire database. The comments on Reddit are only speculation so far. Based on the username, which was apparently "webReadOnly", it might not have been setup correctly, or someone could have found another way to delete the content form the site. Another possibility is that the website has some sort of database flood protection that disables new connections, or perhaps the RIAA themselves removed the content temporarily. The latter seems unlikely, as a better solution would be to take it entirely offline to fix the bigger problem. While they could fix a small vulnerability like this in a matter of seconds, the chances are it’s not an isolated problem. As pointed out by Haywire, playing around with the urls a bit can return some funny results. It is pretty easy to make the RIAA link to The Pirate Bay for example. For now it sure does look like all the content has been wiped from the RIAA homepage. Let’s hope they have backups, or not.

"Because Microsoft takes its commitment to help protect the entire Windows ecosystem seriously, we're updating the IE7 installation experience to make it available as broadly as possible to all Windows users," said Steve Reynolds, an IE program manager, on a Microsoft company blog in early October. "Internet Explorer 7 installation will no longer require Windows Genuine Advantage validation and will be available to all Windows XP users." The IE7 Installation and Availability Update was immediately made available for manual downloading and was offered to consumers and small-business users via the Windows Update service in the weeks that followed. Beginning Feb. 12, the new IE7 package will be put into the WSUS pipeline as an Update Rollup package.

No, it's not funny, but that's because it's not a joke. The Tribunal de Grande Instance (a French appeals court) in Versailles ruled back in December that Amazon was violating the country's 1981 Lang law with its free shipping offer. That law forbids booksellers from offering discounts of more than 5 percent off the list price, and Amazon was found to be exceeding that discount when the free shipping was factored in.
