Routers are a dime a dozen, right? Not so fast (literally). Just because your current router seems to work just fine, you can't be sure you are getting everything out of your connection to the internet due to that old and slow router. The D-Link EXO line is built for prosumer networks with gigabit internet connections and this system can handle the speed with ease. Your router shouldn't be the bottleneck in bandwidth to the internet.Next Page »

D-Link DCS-8300LH Full HD 2-Way Audio Camera
Cloud recording, finally. The DCS-8300LH is in the new line of consumer grade cameras from D-Link that offers baked in cloud recording. While the camera offers many great features for the price point, the software you must use to control the camera feels unpolished and unfinished. It isn't that often that we have mixed feelings about a product that we review, but the D-Link DCS-8300LH is one of those products. There's so much potential in this well priced camera that we recommend holding off for a few months to see improvements in the software as time progresses.Next Page »

Linksys Wemo Smart Home Suite
Belkin's product lines have been around the consumer market since we can remember. When they acquired the consumer brand, Linksys, it strengthen that consumer focus. Branding the Wemo line of products in the Linksys name, Belkin is pushing hard into the smart home market. It makes sense since they basically integrate some processing power with wireless technology. Google home and Alexa are supported, which is key for any smart home product. The Dimmer and the Mini offer some interesting features that other products don't offer.Next Page »

TP-Link Smart Home Suite
More smart home products are coming out from different companies. While Zwave and ZigBee set the standard for hub based smart home products, the consumer level products that use WiFi directly are easy to setup and use, albeit with a few negatives like the ability to control everything from a unified interface across companies. Still, if you stick with a single company, the experience is nearly the same and TP-Link offers a few smart home products that are on the bench today.Next Page »

Technology keeps moving forward. It wasn't too long ago that we reviewed the 2630L and here we have a follow up model to that, the 2530L. While it lacks two way audio, everything else is basically the same. It is also half the size and draws less power. Is it a worthy follow up? Let's find out.Next Page »

The technology market just keeps progressing faster and faster. Last year, we reviewed the 935L from D-Link with a $120 price point. Fast forward to now and the 936L has been released with better overall features and a $70 price point to boot. It's a win for consumers looking for an easily setup security camera.Next Page »

T-Mobile Now Has Free WiFi Calling

Poster: Rich
Posted on May 19, 2011 at 11:50:42 AM
This was released a while ago, but I never posted it as news. I don't like T-Mobile in a few respects, but I thought this was awesome. T-Mobile won't charge for the ability to make calls over WiFi! So, you won't use precious minutes when you're calling over WiFi. From what I understand, you have to log into My T-Mobile and add it to your plan though. So if you have a WiFi enabled phone from T-Mobile you should add the feature immediately. I intend to....

Quote

Currently, placing calls over Wi-Fi deducts from a customer’s in-plan minutes. Effective5/13, a new feature will launch that will allow customers with capable phones the ability to place calls over Wi-Fi without deducting from in-plan minutes! This is not only a great value, being FREE, but can help customers who experience coverage issues in areas that Wi-Fi is available.

This new feature is available to all Even More and Even More Plus Postpaid rate plans for customers with Wi-Fi Calling capable handsets.

Muni WiFi May Be Spurred By Cities

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on October 24, 2007 at 1:27:13 PM
We need to start rolling out WiFi/WiMAX now. All these telcos and cable companies just don't know what competition really is. Why are the plans for FiOS and cable the exact same price in my area?

Quote

But the truth is that blanketing cities with Wi-Fi signals is not inherently a bad idea. Even though some projects have stalled or failed outright, there have also been several success stories. Cities such as Minneapolis, Minn.; Houston, Texas; Burbank, Calif.; and Tucson, Ariz., are moving forward and seeing early signs of success.

One of the common threads weaved through each of these deployments is that all of these cities have committed to using the Wi-Fi networks for their own purposes whether it be to provide remote access for mobile city workers, automate meter reading, control traffic congestion or enhance public safety.

Long Range WiFi

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on March 27, 2007 at 1:05:46 PM
Intel has demonstrated long range Wifi for use in third-world countries... With WiMAX still treading water, why can't everyone use this?

Quote

In a sense, these long-range Wi-Fi antennas would perform the same function as WiMax, a long-range wireless technology that many, including Intel, are experimenting with now. The difference is that a WiMax tower costs about $15,000 to $20,000. The long range Wi-Fi towers might only cost $700 to $800. Additionally, long range Wi-Fi could spread faster, Brewer said. The radio spectrum employed by WiMax is regulated by local telecommunications authorities. Putting up towers or offering services can require getting governmental permission.

Municipal Wifi That Works

Poster: Aron Schatz
Posted on June 29, 2006 at 1:28:04 PM
In Tempe, AZ, they have a municipal wifi network for everyone that works. Emergency workers use the system to help in their jobs.

Quote

The pictures in Jensen's van are sent through the city wireless network to an emergency operation center, where important decisions can be made. "In my (business), you need to make some decisions really quick. That is what this allows us to do," he said. As a specialist in hazardous materials, Jensen gets called in when there is a chemical leak or a suspicious substance that might pose a danger to the public. To find out, Jensen looks at it in a microscope. Often the pictures must be examined further. Through the wireless network, they can be e-mailed to a lab in seconds.
