»Leap Second On New Years

Well, right before New Years. The bulletin states that Dec 31, 2008 will have 86401 seconds. There will be a December 31, 2008 23:59:60!

Code

.
                                   UTC TIME STEP
on the 1st of January 2009

A positive leap second will be introduced at the end of December 2008.
The sequence of dates of the UTC second markers will be:

                          2008 December 31, 23h 59m 59s
                          2008 December 31, 23h 59m 60s
                          2009 January 1, 0h 0m 0s

The difference between UTC and the International Atomic Time TAI is:

  from 2006 January 1, 0h UTC, to 2009 January 1 0h UTC : UTC-TAI = - 33s
  from 2009 January 1, 0h UTC, until further notice : UTC-TAI = - 34s

Leap seconds can be introduced in UTC at the end of the months of December
or June, depending on the evolution of UT1-TAI. Bulletin C is mailed every
six months, either to announce a time step in UTC or to confirm that there
will be no time step at the next possible date.

From Thread: Logitech Quickcam Vision Pro Old Sat Dec 20, 2008 6:45:06 AM
I just purchased the Logitech Quickcam Vision Pro for Mac. I would like to try to do a web cam interview between myself and Windows/OS X users, for a podcast. This is all new to me, so I don't really know where to start. I need to somehow record a video stream. Is it possible to do this with the new GTalk video option, or does this need to be done in Skype? Is Skype the best cross-platform app to use for something like this? How do I record the video stream I am receiving from the person I am interviewing?

At this time, I am mainly using Linux Mint 6 (Felicia) on an IBM ThinkCentre tower and Ubuntu 8.04 on a G5 PPC Mac.

I'd like to start a topic where you tell us your favorite Rock Ballad song and or singer of all time.

I'll start by saying, I'd have a tough time saying which one I think is the "best of all times". So in lieu of that, list your top 3.

SkidRow - I Remember

Journey - Sweet and Simple

From Thread: wireless router to use in home Old Tue Dec 16, 2008 3:14:56 PM

Said By areamike

Go with a Belkin. Much better range than DLink and Linksys.

Wireless N is NOT necessarily better range. It is mainly for more bandwidth. The bottom line for best range is either a range booster of a router with a very good antenna system. If I remember correctly, Wireless B had the best range of all when comparing same routers with same antennas(wireless G, or N)

That's why I said "NOT NECESSARILY." The bottom line for good/best range is a good Antenna or repeater or range extender. Does not matter if it is G, N, B or whatever in the end.
I've got a friend who has a Belkin wireless router in his house and a repeater in his barn about 150 ft away. His neighbor who is over 900 feet away can get his signal just fine. HArd to believe but it is true.

»Microsoft Document Strangle Ending

If anything really hits home about Microsoft losing their grip on proprietary office formats, it is the fact that they are building in ODF support right into Office 2K7. Now let's see if they make a proper implementation of the standard or do a hack Microsoft-ish implementation that's only readable by other MS Office copies... It has been done before.

Quote

For years, IT has struggled with how best to maintain the flow of data across heterogeneous environments without incurring data loss. Monoculture or no, customers often want to save documents in a variety of formats. This has not always worked to Microsoft's advantage. In fact, last year, the British Educational Communications and Technology Agency filed a complaint with the European Commission in which it alleged that Office 2007 would impede educational initiatives because it failed to natively support open standards, in particular, ODF.

Doug Mahugh, a project manager at Microsoft who deals with interoperability issues connected with the Office software suite, described the steps taken today within the broader context of disclosure, transparency, and format support. "To get there, we found that it was not just sufficient to conform to a standard. We needed transparency about all the design decisions involved in getting to that standard...it was a way of pulling together lot of the things we were doing in interoperability." Rightly or not, the perception was that Microsoft Office did not treat ODF as first class citizen. "That kind of feedback is why we built ODF support into SP 2," Mahugh said.
