»PR: Logitech Unveils First Mac-Compatible Webcam with Premium Autofocus Technology, Carl Zeiss Optics

To help you stay close to those who matter most, Logitech (SWX: LOGN) (NASDAQ: LOGI), the world’s leading manufacturer of webcams, today unveiled its first Mac-compatible webcam with premium autofocus technology and Carl Zeiss optics: the Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro webcam for Mac. The new Logitech webcam delivers image-perfect detail and clarity, and exceptional video calling with iChat and Skype.||P|A|G|E||"With this new webcam for Mac computers, we’ve integrated our most advanced video technologies to truly enrich your video-calling experience," said Gina Clark, general manager and vice president of Logitech’s Internet Communications business unit. "The lens and autofocus, the sensor and the lighting software all contribute to create image-perfect detail and clarity. Whether you’ve used a standalone or an embedded webcam in the past, you’ll be amazed at the difference in quality our new webcam makes."

To deliver image-perfect detail and clarity, the Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro webcam for Mac combines Logitech’s premium autofocus technology with Carl Zeiss optics. The new Logitech webcam uses a voice coil motor for its autofocus system, instead of a stepper motor. Focusing is fast and fluid - crisp even in extreme close-ups only 10 cm from the camera lens. Logitech’s autofocus system compensates for changes in image-edge sharpness and refocuses images in less than three seconds. And through its exclusive collaboration with Carl Zeiss, Logitech ensures that the lens meets the world-renowned Zeiss standards for design and manufacturing to achieve superior sharpness in a compact, lightweight design.

The 2-megapixel sensor helps the Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro webcam for Mac capture video images in high resolution. It is assisted by Logitech’s RightLight2 Technology, which enables the webcam to adjust intelligently in dim or harshly backlighted situations.

Optimized Experience for the Mac
When you and your loved ones use the new Logitech webcam with iChat or Skype, you can enjoy VGA-quality video at up to 30 frames per second - four times as sharp and twice as smooth as any other video-calling solution - at no additional charge.

The new Logitech webcam is also plug and play right out of the box, so you can make a video call immediately - no software required. When using your webcam to capture video to store on disk or send to friends, the QuickCam Vision Pro records sharp video clips in the 720p high-definition (HD) video format (960-by-720 pixels).

Complementing the style of your Mac computer, the new webcam for Mac computers presents a black-and-silver profile with a prominent built-in silver microphone.

Pricing and Availability
The Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro webcam for Mac is expected to be available in the U.S. and Europe beginning in July. The suggested retail price in the U.S. is $129.99.

Unable to transcode does not sound like a Burner problem. Sounds more like a Software issue.

Do a google search for AVI to DVD. You need to get that AVI into .IFO, .VOS and .BUP file types that are easily burned in DVD mode in Nero.

»Linux Foundation Complains About Nvidia Drivers

The Linux Foundation is going on a rant and complaining about Nvidia's binary only drivers. Nvidia is the only large graphics company to not attempt to open up their specifications on the hardware. Intel, VIA, and even AMD have opened up their hardware. Linux is the future and if Nvidia continues this trend, AMD is in a good position to clean up. I have in my hands a Sapphire Radeon HD 4850 that works well in Linux and was just released.

Quote

"We...consider any closed-source Linux kernel module or driver to be harmful and undesirable," the official statement begins. "Vendors that provide closed-source kernel modules force their customers to give up key Linux advantages or choose new vendors." But Bottomley gets much more specific than this. "Their (Nvidia's) binary module is one of the top causes of kernel crashes, which makes Linux look bad," he said. "Nvidia does a reasonable job of Q-and-A-ing (quality assurance) of a certain number of configurations but the problem is that their configurations (are) a lot less than what's actually out there on the market," Bottomley said.

That being said, AMD's fully open source driver team at Novell still as a ways to go before being on par with the FireGL binary driver. Even so, AMD is providing more and more feature with FireGL including Crossfire support (finally!).

nVidia is claiming a 100% improvement over the shitastic 9800 GX2 (whereas the 4850 is supposed to be roughly equal to that lovely piece of crap), but based on its specs I think it will be right in line with the 4870. Should offer the best battle since the 6800/X800 wars.

From Thread: Verizon Boosts FIOS Speeds Old Wed Jun 18, 2008 5:50:07 AM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»Verizon Boosts FIOS Speeds

Verizon has increased all tiers of their FIOS program. The lowest tier is now 10/2Mbps. That's insane.

Quote

As part of the upgrade, all Fios customers will now have access to download speeds of 50 megabits per second and uploads of 20 Mbps for about $140 a month. The company is also offering its symmetrical 20 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload service to all Fios customers for $65 a month.

Verizon had already been offering these speeds in certain markets such as Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York. But now the service will be expanded to Verizon's entire Fios customer base, which is spread throughout its 16-state territory. Previously Fios in these states, such as Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia, topped out at 30Mbps/15Mbps and 15Mbps/15Mbps.

Verizon will also upgrade its mid tier offering increasing speeds from 15Mbps/2Mbps to 20Mbps/5Mbps. And the low end service will increase from 5Mbps/2Mbps to 10Mbps/2Mbps.

From Thread: Obama, Hillary or (pfft) McCain? Old Tue Jun 17, 2008 2:30:06 PM

Said By areamike

No one has made a difference since Ronald Reagan.

And all he did was fuck things up that Nixon had fixed.

From CNN.com:

Quote

McCain does oppose drilling in some parts of the wilderness and says those areas must be left undisturbed.
"When America set aside the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, we called it a 'refuge' for a reason," he will say.
McCain on Tuesday will also criticize the energy policy of rival Barack Obama.
"He says that high oil prices are not the problem, but only that they rose too quickly. He's doesn't support new domestic production. He doesn't support new nuclear plants. He doesn't support more traditional use of coal, either," McCain will say.
"So what does Sen. Obama support in energy policy? Well, for starters he supported the energy bill of 2005 -- a grab bag of corporate favors that I opposed. And now he supports new taxes on energy producers. He wants a windfall profits tax on oil, to go along with the new taxes he also plans for coal and natural gas. If the plan sounds familiar, it's because that was President Jimmy Carter's big idea too -- and a lot of good it did us," he will say.
McCain will argue that a windfall profits tax will only increase the country's dependence on foreign oil and be an obstacle to domestic exploration.
"I'm all for recycling -- but it's better applied to paper and plastic than to the failed policies of the 1970s," he will say.

Obama on Tuesday blasted McCain for changing his stance on offshore drilling.
"John McCain's support of the moratorium on offshore drilling during his first presidential campaign was certainly laudable, but his decision to completely change his position and tell a group of Houston oil executives exactly what they wanted to hear today was the same Washington politics that has prevented us from achieving energy independence for decades," he said in a statement.
"It's another example of short-term political posturing from Washington, not the long-term leadership we need to solve our dependence on oil," he said.
Obama says a windfall profits tax would ease the burden of energy costs on working families. He also wants to invest in affordable, renewable energy sources.
Controversy over offshore drilling first surfaced in the United States in 1969, after a crack in the sea floor led to a huge oil spill off Santa Barbara, California.
During the 1970s, when many Arab nations launched an oil embargo, many U.S. officials pushed for the exploration of offshore drilling of the coastal U.S. Environmentalists responded by turning up the volume on their cries against offshore drilling.

»AP Serves 7 DMCA Takedowns, Rescinds

The AP tried to use DMCA takedown notices to stop quoting of their reports in other sites. The backlash from those notices made them rescind their notices. The AP is really stupid for doing something like this. Most of these "blogs" today are just echoing stories (I'm echoing a story right now!). The AP sometimes changes content so the original information is lost so when people quote the original, it is safe from change. AP needs to sort out this stuff since it is covered under Fair Use... plus all quotes were given with citations.

Quote

I'm currently engaged in a legal disagreement with the Associated Press, which claims that Drudge Retort users linking to its stories are violating its copyright and committing "'hot news' misappropriation under New York state law." An AP attorney filed six Digital Millenium Copyright Act takedown requests this week demanding the removal of blog entries and another for a user comment.

The Retort is a community site comparable in function to Digg, Reddit and Mixx. The 8,500 users of the site contribute blog entries of their own authorship and links to interesting news articles on the web, which appear immediately on the site. None of the six entries challenged by AP, which include two that I posted myself, contains the full text of an AP story or anything close to it. They reproduce short excerpts of the articles -- ranging in length from 33 to 79 words -- and five of the six have a user-created headline.

This is no different from what I just did above.

"No you will become infamous for starting the Were-Vampire Wars." Overlord said.
They had returned to the clan's hideout only to find that the Vampire's had declared war on the werewolves.
"But father if we erradicate the vampires then there will be no one to challenge us for human blood." Ventruss said.
"Don't worry father i will make a great leader and will make up for Ventruss's folly." a young voice said.
The voice was of Ventruss and Kumori's younger arrogant little brother. He had a silver coat and silver eyes. He stood at only four foot six and was twelve years old, only four years young then his brothers. His name was Hinid
"You. You have no power what so ever." Ventruss said.
"Realy? I could take both you and Kumori down." Hinid said.
"Try it." Ventruss said while raising his claw for an attack.
His brother screamed in terror and Ventruss said, "And you think you could defeat me."
"Stop it now! No matter what happens we have to fight this war." Overlord said.
"Well then what's our plan?" Kumori asked ignoring both his brothers.
"For now to engage the Vampires whenever we can." Overlord said.
"So its you me and Kumori leading our clan and all the werewolf clans to victory?" Ventruss asked.
"No. I want you to meet someone. He is two years older than both of you and is one of the greatest tactical geniuses we have ever had. Ginfed Kyoushu." Overlord said as a wolf with silver fur and silver eyes walked in.
He stood at seven foot two and had two inch long claws. His mouth was closed and he had an evil look in his eyes.
"So I finally get to meet Bloodbath and Shadow." Ginfed said with a voice that sounded like a dark leader.
He held out his hand to shake with Ventruss.
"Yes. I hope we didn't dissapoint you." Ventruss said sarcastically while slapping the hand down.
"Watch your toung boy." Ginfed said.
"What are you going to do. I don't care how old or tall you are i can kill you in an instant." Ventruss said.
"Enough! I will not have you two fighting either." Overlord yelled.

The group had returned to the leaf village where Kumori and Koji would be stationed helping the Kages plan the war. Koji was watching Gaara when Kumori walked up. Koji and Kumori now wore the jounin vests of their seperate villages over their normal clothes.
"Trying to figure out how to gain the chakra of the Shukaku?" Kumori asked.
"Yeah. How'd ya know?" Koji asked.
"Simple you have that same look that you have whenever your trying to figure out how to kill your father." Kumori said.
"Yeah well this job is perfect. Now i can get the Kages to make moves that will in esence end the war and get me controll of the demons." Koji said.
It was then that Naruto Sasuke and Kakashi walked in.
"Okay Koji Kumori you two are the best tacticians from your respective villages so what should our first move be." Sasuke said while pointing to a military map at the center of the room.
The map had marked out which villages were in league with Oruchi-Maru and which ones weren't.
"Well the closest village that we should attack is probably the rain village." Koji said.
"If we do that then i want us to send in a team of at least two ninja to stake out the village and have information on hand." Kakashi said.
"Me and Kumori will do it." Koji said.
"Fine but remember this is your one chance to prove yourselves." Gaara said.
"You can trust us." Kumori said.
"Right." Naruto said in a huffed tone.
Koji and Kumori left the breifing room and got prepared for their mission. They both changed into uniforms that would fool anyone into thinking they weren't ninja. They left the village and headed out to the rain village. The first night of their journey they stayed at an inn that was also a tavern.
"So why did you sugest the rain village? I mean i never heard of a kyubi here." Kumori asked.
"Becuase the five tailed wolf demon spends this half of the year in the rain village." Koji said.
He took a drink of his Sake while Kumori sipped on wine, a drink he considered more sophisticated.
"Ah. So that was your plan. But how do you plan on finding him?" Kumori asked.
"Simple the fighting of the villages will draw him out at that time we confront and kill him like we did the demon of the snow. You know that evil ninja that was almost all powerful." Koji said.
"Ah. Make him die of chakra loss." Kumori said.
"Yep." Koji said when suddenly someone spilled their drink on him.
Koji broke the glass he was drinking from without even cutting himself.
"Who did that?" Koji asked.
Suddenly a big guy stepped foreward.
"Me what ya gonna do about shrimp?" the guy asked.
"This." Koji said while drawing a small dagger.
He whipped the man around and grabbed him by the hair. He then slit the man's throat.
"Anyone else wanna mess with me." Koji asked.
Everyone silent for a minute then the bar got back to normal.
"So much for a low profile." Kumori said.
As they left the next morning Kumori payed everyone to not say a word of what happened to anyone. They soon reached the village hidden in the rain. While Kumori got a room and got information on the military, Koji was searching for the five tailed wolf demon. He soon made a break through with a very reliable source.
"So you want to know about the five tailed demon eh? well you've come to the right place." the man said.
He had white hair and wore glasses. He wore a white robe but Koji knew who it realy was.
"Listen Kabuto, cut to the chase. Where can i find the demon?" Koji asked while grabbing Kabuto's robe by the collar.
"You allready know. He is in the forest waiting for you." Kabuto said like a smartallec.
"Thanks." Koji said while releasing the man.
Kabuto straigtened his robe then left the bar they were meeting at.
Koji gathered Kumori and told him to get the armies to move in now. Kumori went about doing it and soon the leaf and sand armies were on their way led by Kakashi. When they arrived Kumori gave Kakashi all the information he had on the rain village.
"This is it?" Kakashi asked.
"Yeah now me and Koji need to get going." Kumori said.
"Where to?" Kakashi asked.
"We just have buisnessto finish in the village." Koji said not even looking the shinobi in the eye.
"Fine but hurry up." Kakashi said.
Kumori nodded and the two took off.
"So how long till we meet this demon?" Kumori asked.
"As soon as we get out there." Koji answered.
The two soon reached the forest. It was immeadetly followed by the appearance if the five tailed demon.
"So you must be the kid of the snake demon. I can't wait to eat you." the wolf said.

The OCX naming is the highest level of overclock from BFG; while the company has been a bit conservative with overclocks over the past year, they felt it's time to kick it up a notch and expand upon the popular OC naming scheme.

technology and radiation shielding may seem gimmicky, but these great-sounding cans give our trusty Sennheiser HD280 Pro's a serious run for their money. To our ears, they're best suited for applications where sonic accuracy is key; though we'd have virtually no qualms about recommending them for casual as well as critical listening.

There are a number of interesting things coming out of Computex in Taiwan this week. The two that initially stood out were from AMD's ATI unit and NVIDIA. Both promise a dramatic change in how some of us do things and with only few days to go till the iPhone launch, one of them could redefine the competitive landscape. Let's chat about how these announcements could change our mobile future.

Thermaltake played a large role in the evolution of the water-cooling phenomenon. With their manufacturing capability and R&D teams, the company has made improvements in the quality of components used and the level of skill needed to install a unit successfully. The Thermaltake ProWater 850i is a step above the company's entry level water cooling kits and is a good choice for those looking for stable performance with a low acoustic footprint. The fan is able to crank up to very high speeds, giving overclockers who are less worried about noise and more focused on performance the opportunity to let their system run wild.

Today. we take a look on MSI's upcoming P45 Diamond motherboard that is equipped with Intel latest EagleLake chipset aka P45. The new chipset brings official support for 1333MHz FSB along with the option to use DDR3-1333MHz. We say option as the chipset also supports DDR2-800MHz and the motherboard manufacturer can decide which way to go. In MSI's case, the P45 Diamond is their highest-end P45 board and thus, it's no surprise to see it equipped DDR3 slots.

With both AMD and Nvidia readying a new arsenal of videocards, the real battle for GPU supremacy won't be fought until later this summer. In the meantime, gamers are enjoying attractive price points nearly across the board, and unlike days of yesteryear, enthusiasts needn't plunk down $600+ for a high end gaming experience. Remarkably, AMD's HD 3870 has nestled into the $150ish tier, unheard of territory for a higher performance part.

This article serves only one purpose: test three of the industry's most coveted coolers. Not very long ago Benchmark Reviews published the article Best CPU Cooler Performance - Q1 2008. At the time, the effort we gave in producing our test results seemed well worth the trouble. However, months later we see that there's a lot more to a cooler than just measuring performance with the same common fan. So after even more testing, we now have a full understanding of each CPU coolers individual characteristics and deliver the results to you. Benchmark Reviews is proud to present a three-way fight to the finish: The OCZ Vendetta 2 vs. Thermalright's Ultra-120 eXtreme vs. Xigmatek's HDT-S1283.

Digital cameras revolutionized the consumer photography scene and it seems that we are currently undergoing a similar revolution in the arena of digital videos. Up until now, most digital camcorders have been too expensive for the average consumer. With products like the Samsung SC-MX10 Flash Memory Camcorder, it just got a heck of a lot easier for Joe Public to transform into the next Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese. Oh, I guess you should have some movie-making talent before you can make that leap.

AMD's progress of late has been rather slow. With Phenom being initially delayed due to poor clocking, and then being bitten by the TLB bug in its B2 stepping core, AMD's Phenom has been a late bloomer. Although it has now come out of its shell, it's still not able to kick Intel off the performance ladder. Today we are testing out ECS' AMD 780G chipset variant that is designed to replace the 690G chipset which was very popular as a value option. How does ECS' 780G compare to the ASUS 780G we have already tested? Let's take a gander.

Mistakes happen. We are all human and sometimes we do things we later realize were not the best way to do them. Most of the time these mistakes are small and harmless and sometimes they cost you. In this regard, I am referring to the NVIDIA 780i chipset. Yes, that's right, I called it a mistake. With native PCIe 2.0, eSATA and support for Intel's 1600MHz FSB CPUs, the 790i Ultra is what the 780i should have been, thereby making the 780i a very costly mistake for anyone who purchased one. But like all mistakes, we need to put the past behind us and look forward to better and brighter things. Better and brighter is just what XFX specializes in and with this board they aim to keep the good times rolling. As stated before, this board comes with lots of goodies including PCIe 2.0, on board eSATA, triple-SLI support, DDR3 support, and a sexy black PCB. If that wasn't enough, just wait until you look at all the accessories XFX throws into the mix. Without further ado I present to y! ou the XFX 790i Ultra.

Quote

Quote: No doubt the PNY Verto GeForce 9600 GT was up against some stiff competition when we tested it at a resolution of 2560x1600. Given that the card is a reference model it performed admirably against the GeForce 8800 GT and GTS, and outperformed the Radeon HD 3870 in many of our tests at both resolutions. Considering that currently the Radeon HD 3870 has to have a rebate to match the price of our PNY 9600 GT it's hard to argue against what a great value this card is...
