»PR: Antec: Twelve Hundred PC Case with Impressive Cooling and Capacity

Fremont, CA - April 28, 2008 - Antec, Inc., the leading global brand of high-performance computer components for the PC upgrade and Do-It-Yourself markets, has launched the Twelve Hundred PC enclosure, the next evolution of its best-selling Nine Hundred case. With an advanced cooling system, a spacious design and other convenient features, the Twelve Hundred is an excellent choice for gamers and other high-performance PC builders.||P|A|G|E||The Twelve Hundred features an exceptionally robust cooling system, designed to accommodate even the most demanding gaming PCs. This system is composed of a top 200mm TriCool fan, two rear 120mm TriCool fans and three front 120mm fans. All TriCool fans come with 3-speed control, enabling users to optimize their balance of cooling and quiet. Two additional 120mm fan mounts give builders the option to provide cooling to the graphics cards and the CPU. The Twelve Hundred also comes with a water cooling platform that can be used to position a reservoir or a pump. A perforated front panel and a washable air filter help to take in air more efficiently and reduce dust build up. The case also includes an advanced cable management system that allows cables to be tucked out of the way for unrestricted airflow.

The Twelve Hundred is spacious and versatile, with twelve drive bays and seven expansion slots. This provides builders with room for all their high-performance components including dual full-length graphics cards, while a clear side-panel allows users to show off their cutting-edge systems. All fans come with internal blue LED illumination; the light on the top fan can be turned on and off by an easily accessed switch. A convenient top accessory tray gives builders a place to store their favorite gadgets such as media players or digital cameras, while two front-mounted USB ports and eSATA as well as HD audio ports provide convenient access.

"The Nine Hundred is one of our most popular cases, and the Twelve Hundred builds on its design with even more cooling and capacity," said Scott Richards, senior vice president for Antec. "On top of that, we've also added some highly demanded features such as input air filtering, variable speed fans and more. With the Twelve Hundred, we deliver an outstanding case not only for Nine Hundred fans planning an upgrade, but for all gamers and PC builders looking for the best and biggest capacities."

The Twelve Hundred is available now through major retailers, e-tailers, and distributors. The case will retail for approximately $209.95 and is backed by Antec's Quality 3-Year Warranty. For additional product information and full technical specifications, please visit http://www.antec.com.

From Thread: Average Webpage Triples In Size Old Mon Apr 28, 2008 7:23:36 AM

»Average Webpage Triples In Size

Here is an interesting <a href="http://www.websiteoptimization.com/speed/tweak/average-web-page/">report</a> on how webpage sizes have increased in size over the years</a>. ASE Labs is also a good example. I was always reluctant to ad features to the front page and such, but now it shows article images, Adnet content blocks, Prototype.js, and other stuff. The first version was straight HTML (no CSS even!). Times have changed.

Quote

The size of the average web page has more than tripled since 2003. From 2003 to 2008 the average web page grew from 93.7K to over 312K (see Figure 1), some 233% (Domenech et al. 2007, Flinn & Betcher 2008). During the same five-year period, the number of objects in the average web page nearly doubled from 25.7 to 49.9 objects per page. Longer term statistics show that since 1995 the size of the average web page has increased by 22 times, and the number of objects per page has grown by 21.7 times.

Quote

ASE Labs has always explained the benefits of having redundant storage and backups. There are series of articles devoted to each technology. Sans Digital is a big player in RAID enclosures and their latest model, the MobileSTOR MS2UTN+ delivers USB2 and eSATA support to a 2 disk array of your choosing. This combines the best of both world for data backup and redundancy. It really is an excellent product.

OCZ may be best known for their memory products such as low latency and high speed RAM, but they also provide other products with enhanced speed and performance. Even flash can be dual channel.

What happens when you need a full size case for a new build? Maybe you want the extra space for additional cooling or hardware support. Look no futher than the Thermaltake Armor VA8003BWS. Both of these products were used in our recent review of the ASUS P5E3 Premium motherboard. We saw some rather interesting phenomena with both of these memory kits in that review so we have decided to review both of these kits comparatively in much more detail using the same test rig. Our goal is not only to give you a complete review of these two memory products, but to also answer the questions we alluded to in the beginning of this introduction.

Getting your hands on this device should solve your problems when it comes to flexible mobile storage with fail-safe protection. This is Enhance Technology's T4H CR. The unit comprises a very nicely built enclosure with handles for easy mobility, four HDD eSATA bays, a built-in LCD display for setup and configuration, and last but most certainly not least, a RAID controller with levels 0, 0+1 and 5. An independent PSU and rear mounted case fan is also resident. Before we get into the benchmarking side of things, let's perform a close physical inspection of the unit itself to get the full gist of what's on offer.

Antec is never stopping with the introduction of new cases. If seems like every 3 months or so there is a new case to drool over. That new case today is the tiny brother case of the P180 which is simply labeled the P180 Mini. The Mini carries many of the features of the P180 but in a smaller shell. The only thing that is lacking is the spacing of the P180. But the compartments and cable management systems remain in place. But what the Mini has over the regular size P180 is lighter weight and somewhat portability. It is definitely one for the person that is lacking room to house a bigger size tower but is it one for the LAN goers? This is what we will find out.

Even though the AMD Unified Video Decoder can offload CPU usage in HD playback by putting the work on the graphics processing unit, if you're running multiple tasks during HD playback, the system does struggle if it doesn't have the horse power. We don't do it often, but at times we'll be converting files into DivX for sharing, and the CPU is completely maxed out, causing dropped frames during HD playback. For the test files we used, the X3 8750 had no problems with HD and file conversion.

It was also able to perform better than the Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 and Core 2 Duo E6750 as seen in the benchmarks. Intel still has the lead when overclocking, but AMD hasn't been marketing the Phenom X3 series as enthusiasts parts. It is able to provide playable frame rates in some situations but is bested by the Nvidia 8800 GTS in most of those same situations. When it comes to performance compared to a standard 3870 with 512MB, our 1GB version really didn't show much improvement in our short battery of test, but I believe that the performance is being held back more by the actual GPU than an increase in memory bandwidth and size can help. D-LINK NOW SHIPPING PC-ON-TV PLAYER
TO BRING ENTIRE PC EXPERIENCE TO THE TELEVISION

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., April 21, 2008 - D-Link, the end-to-end networking solutions provider for consumer and business, today began shipping a new kind of media player, D-Link PC-on-TV, which enables users to bring their entire PC experience to their television. PC-on-TV (DPG-1200) is ideally suited for watching popular Web-based content available on their PC from a TV.

D-Link PC-on-TV, the newest member of the MediaLounge family of media players, connects directly to the television with VGA, component or included composite cables and then connects via Wi-Fi to a computer on the home network. The user can then control the connected computer using the PC-on-TV remote control. The trackball remote control includes buttons for all common navigation functions.
D-Link PC-on-TV lets users go to the Internet and stream Web-based content, such as YouTube videos, Google Video, Veoh Networks' content and more, directly from their PCs via the web pages. They can watch virtually any local video content, and use existing media player programs, such as iTunes, Nero, Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, etc. directly on their digital television*. This capability eliminates the time and cost to burn DVDs and play the videos from a DVD player.

D-Link PC-on-TV works both with TVs and projectors and supports photo viewing at 1024x768 screen resolution and streaming video at 640x480 resolution at up to 30 frames per second. It allows consumers to easily browse all their PC content with a mouse-like trackball remote control, effectively giving them control over the host PC.

The D-Link DPG-1200 player will also include a portal landing page on the TV with links to VeohTV and active-TV ONLINE applications, each offering a single interface to search, browse and view nearly all video on the Internet. These services allow users quick links to find videos and much more on screens designed to fit their television screen and be viewed from their couch.

VeohTV offers programming from media companies, as well as independently produced content available on sites such as YouTube, Google Video, Veoh.com MySpace and BitTorrent.

"The D-Link PC-on-TV is an elegant solution for extending the PC experience to a television in the other room," said Chris Wong, director of product management, multimedia for D-Link Systems, Inc. "We've developed a simple way for our customers to leverage their big screen television for accessing and enjoying applications traditionally reserved for the computer. Users can now share virtually any movie, song or Internet video with others from the comfort of their family room, with only the click of a few buttons."

D-Link PC-on-TV also allows users to control their computer remotely from the television, including navigating the Internet via a standard web browser, playing many online games and more.

Other features that make the PC-on-TV device easy to use for the consumer are: 10/100 Ethernet wired and 802.11g wireless network interface, composite, component and VGA video outputs for plugging into the television.

Price and Availability

The D-Link PC-on-TV Player (DPG-1200) is now available from D-Link's network of retail outlets, value-added resellers, distributors and http://www.dlinkshop.com. The manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) is $239.99.

»District Court Invalids Part of Copyright Law

This is a step in the right direction. <a href="http://fairuse.stanford.edu/blog/2008/04/district-court-invalidates-por.html">States cannot be sued for copyright infringement</a>. The law that allowed this was deemed unconstitutional. What does this mean?

Quote

In short, the Court invalidated the Copyright Remedy Clarification Act as unconstitutional, thus ruling that a State, employee of a State (acting within his or her official capacity) or instrumentality of a State cannot be held liable for copyright infringement.

Minow: Do all state employees have immunity for copyright infringement?

Pink: No. The Court's ruling only applies to state employees acting within their "official capcity." This gets a little tricky because a state official who has acted in violation of federal law will be stripped of his or her "official" character and will not be immune to suit under the 11th Amendment. Thus, for example, in the Marketing case, plaintiff may not seek damages against the professor in his official capacity as that it would violate the state’s sovereign immunity under the 11th Amendment, but the professor likely would be "stripped of his official or representative character" and would be "subjected in his person to the consequences of his individual conduct" if plaintiff can show that the professor violated plaintiff’s federally protected copyright. In other words, a state employee will be subjected to suit in his or her individual capacity even though he or she had been acting as an agent of the State if it is shown that the employee's conduct was ultra vires his or her delegated authority, e.g. by violating a federal law.

In really short, it is a small victory and leads us in the right direction for sane IP law.

From Thread: Space Invaders Extreme Rocks. Old Sun Apr 20, 2008 3:15:23 PM
So I've been fiddling about with Space Invaders Extreme, Taito's seemingly 30th attempt at remaking Space Invaders in as many years. And unlike the pretty "meh" fest that was Space Invaders DS, it seems like Taito finally got this one right. The gameplay is refreshingly original yet still familiar, the game is stylistically brilliant, and the rumble feature is implemented perfectly, to be frank (think Rez, essentially). The videos online simply do not give the game its due. I'm interested in playing this with the Arkanoid Paddle controller, but I'm not sure if I want to import it. This is to Space Invaders what Pac Man Championship Edition was to Pac Man, I'd say.

From Thread: Sonic Genesis doesn't do anything right. By Tornado Old Sun Apr 20, 2008 12:14:36 PM
Yes. A GBA release of the first Sonic game, which Sega felt the need to completely recode for the GBA rather than simply port Sonic 1 to the GBA.

Sonic Rush Adventure was a far better game than Sonic Rush, though I feel it wasn't up to the level that Sonic Advance 2 and Sonic Advance had set.

And I disagree. Sonic 1 with spindash is actually pretty fun. But it has to be coded competently so it doesn't glitch the collision detection. Sonic Megamix and Sonic Jam did this right. Sonic Genesis did this very, very wrong.

Let me just start out with Wow...

This game, though it is long as HELL to complete a map, is a very epic game in its own general zone.

I recommend it to anyone who loves RTS's and loves complicated AI.

When you can force Ghandi into a Vassle state. (Basically, you protect them and overlook their wellbeing and support) Arm him with Nukes, and have him Nuke Spain.

It couldnt get any better.

VIA ARTiGO Pico-ITX Kit Highlighted at ESC Silicon Valley Keynote, BYOES Track and Microsoft SPARK Your Imagination Program

San Jose, California, 16 April 2008 - VIA Technologies, Inc, a leading innovator of embedded silicon and platform technologies, today announced that the VIA ARTiGO Pico-ITX builder kit has been selected as the platform for the Build Your Own Embedded System track, a new hands-on embedded system development lab at Embedded Systems Conference Silicon Valley, taking place in San Jose from 14-18 April.||P|A|G|E||Illustrating the suitability of the super-compact system for x86 embedded design, the VIA ARTiGO will also be featured in the Microsoft conference keynote, and is one of the primary VIA platform offerings for the Microsoft SPARK Your Imagination program, aimed at spurring innovative embedded system development among academics and hobbyists.

Visitors to ESC Silicon Valley will be able to catch up with the VIA ARTiGO and many other leading VIA embedded x86 technologies at the VIA booth 2110.

"We are excited to be featuring the VIA ARTiGO builder kit as an offering in our SPARK Your Imagination program," said Scott Davis, Senior Marketing Manager, Microsoft Windows Embedded Academic & Community Programs. "The SPARK program demonstrates Microsoft's commitment to the developer community by making leading development tools available to hobbyist developers and academics, helping to foster their creativity and drive innovation in the industry."

Keynote: During the Microsoft Industry Address on Wednesday 16th April, Kevin Dallas and Mike Hall, General Manager and Software Architect respectively of the Windows Embedded Group, will define the evolution of embedded devices and their increasing integration into networked and service-based applications, highlighting the importance of creating an environment to facilitate those designs quickly and easily. The VIA ARTiGO will be used in two demonstrations highlighting two of the Windows Embedded innovations helping to drive these market changes.

BYOES Track: The Build Your Own Embedded System (BYOES) is a new track at ESC and has been sponsored by Microsoft Windows Embedded as a unique learning experience for developers. Working closely with system experts, attendees can design and build a real, practical embedded system, customizing a VIA ARTiGO to meet their device needs, and learn how to implement wireless and network connectivity, and GPS, web server and other key applications within the Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2 environment. At the end of the event, each attendee gets to keep their newly configured VIA ARTiGO embedded system.

"We are delighted that Microsoft will leverage the small size and software compatibility of our ARTiGO Pico-ITX builder kit in both their keynote and the 'Build Your Own Embedded System' track at ESC," said Daniel Wu, Vice President, VIA Embedded Platform Division, VIA Technologies, Inc. "Not only does the tiny system serve as the ideal platform for today's x86 embedded devices, it underlines a perfect fit of Microsoft's embedded software and VIA's power efficient, highly integrated hardware."
