»DHS: US National ID Close

I thought we weren't living in Soviet Russia? <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/02/05/real_id_for_cold_medicine/">The DHS wants to increase the Real ID provisions to include buying some OTC drugs</a>. Do not let this kind of crap fool you. More security provisions (which don't secure a damn thing) like this keep eroding our privacy and freedoms till we have nothing. Don't let the government do this.

Quote

His comment came five days after the agency released final rules implementing the REAL ID Act of 2005 that made no mention of such requirements. It mandates the establishment uniform standards and procedures that must be met before state-issued licenses can be accepted as identification for official purposes.

Beyond boarding airplanes and entering federal buildings or nuclear facilities, there are no other official purposes spelled out in the regulations. And that's just what concerns people at the Center for Democracy and Technology. They say Baker's statement underscores "mission creep," in which the scope and purpose of the REAL ID Act gradually expands over time.

What a scary time we live in thank to the 'terrorists.' The people have to fight against the government because of them taking our rights away. Terrorists have won?

From Thread: PostgreSQL 8.3 Released Old Tue Feb 5, 2008 10:23:18 AM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»PostgreSQL 8.3 Released

PostgreSQL is a powerful true SQL engine that is fully open source and competes with MySQL and all the way up to Oracle and the like. <a href="http://www.postgresql.org/about/press/presskit83">They have just released version 8.3 which promises speed increases</a>. While Version 4 will only be written for MySQL, the DB abstraction layer can handle others. PostgreSQL looks better and better. I think it is time I really checked it out.

Quote

Version 8.3 provides greater consistency of performance than previous versions, ensuring that every user can depend on the same high performance demonstrated in recent benchmarks for every transaction, whether in peak hours or not, seven days a week, 52 weeks per year. Major performance enhancements include:
* Heap Only Tuples (HOT), which eliminate up to 3/4 of the maintenance overhead of frequently updated tables
* Spread checkpoints and background writer autotuning, which reduce the impact of checkpoints on response times
* Asynchronous commit option for much faster response times on some transactions
These changes also significantly accelerate transaction processing throughput, between 5% and 30%, depending on the workload.

»NVIDIA Aquires AGEIA

It is official. NVIDIA is buying the PhysX maker. <a href="http://www.nvidia.com/object/io_1202161567170.html">Full PR here</a>. This may spell trouble for AMD considering that all major physics engines have been bought (Intel owns Havok). What the industry needs to do is make some open standards. They've got OpenGL for graphics. It sounds like it is time for OpenPL.

Quote

NVIDIA (Nasdaq: NVDA), the world leader in visual computing technologies and the inventor of the GPU, today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire AGEIA Technologies, Inc., the industry leader in gaming physics technology. AGEIA's PhysX software is widely adopted with more than 140 PhysX-based games shipping or in development on Sony Playstation3, Microsoft XBOX 360, Nintendo Wii and Gaming PCs. AGEIA physics software is pervasive with over 10,000 registered and active users of the PhysX SDK.

You didn't know that AGEIA survives by supplying the physics engines of all three current consoles?

It turns out that Kingston is going to be making a large push for the consumer flash market. They want to have a much larger presence and compete with big players such as Lexar (owned by Micron). Kingston has the resources and today, we will look at their MobileLite 9-in-1 USB2 card reader.

A few months ago, I reviewed the VisionTek TV Wonder HD 650 PCIe. It is a great expansion card for desktop users but it has small limitation that it will only work with desktop. For the user who is always on the run or has committed to use their laptop as their primary PC, it is not an option. There is no shortage of TV tuners designed for laptop users from many desktop TV tuner manufactures. They come in different shapes and forms and connects through laptops via USB, ExpressCard, and PCMCIA. Despite the fact that the PCMCIA is quickly being phased out in laptops and is being replaced by the ExpressCard, you can still find some of these cards on the market specially for the old analog tuners. Whicheve card you choose ultimately depends on what expansion slots you have in your system.

It seems that the success of one good cooler doesn't keep it on top forever, so all companies must try and produce a successor to these units. And Scythe knows this and got on the job of constructing a new cooler. That new cooler came to be the Zipang. I am still on the lookout on what Zipang means in plain English but when it comes to coolers it means a large 140mm cooling, six heat pipes and multi-processor support. From the looks of the Zipang it just may be a overclocker's best friend. But lets see if the test backs up our early judgment.

Quote: Unlike satellite or cable HD, OTA HD is fully uncompressed. What this means is the picture quality should be better than subscription based HD. The downside of uncompressed HD is that if you have plans of recording this type of video, be prepared to have a lot of disk space used. the included OnAir software, a mere 10 second capture used up 25MB of disk space, 30 seconds eating up 57.3MB. For a 60 minute show, you'll probably use up about 9GB of space. However, the picture quality is simply amazing. Let's just say with LOST premiering tomorrow night, it's going to be quite an experience.

»Microsoft Bids $44.6 Billion For Yahoo

Yahoo. Not really, <a href="http://www.news.com/2100-1014_3-6228705.html">Microsoft has bid $44.6 Billion for the online giant</a>. If Microsoft did succeed in purchasing Yahoo, expect a duopoly of internet media in the form of Microsoft and Google. That may be worse for the market.

Quote

Yahoo said in a responding statement that its board "will evaluate this proposal carefully and promptly, in the context of Yahoo's strategic plans, and pursue the best course of action to maximize long-term value for shareholders." The deal comes as Microsoft and Yahoo have both struggled to compete against Google. Microsoft didn't mention Google by name in its announcement, but it did indicate that its acquisition bid was aimed squarely at its rival. "Today, the market is increasingly dominated by one player, who is consolidating its dominance through acquisition," Microsoft said. "Together, Microsoft and Yahoo can offer a credible alternative."

These marketing pieces are riddled with cruft that you need to read through.

From Thread: Manga I'm Making Old Fri Feb 1, 2008 9:03:23 AM
okay, so i'm working on this manga and i'm very stuck! i'm working on writing volume three right now. i would like some help for chapter ideas.
the story so far:
Kadis and Baka are trying to kill eachother but and their magic combines to create a beautiful cat girl! For lack of a better name Kadis named the girl Neko (cat in japanese).
Later on in the story Kadis falls in love with a guy in their class, Kage. Kage seems to hate everyone but Kadis!
It's a comedy/ action/ romance manga. Neko ends up falling for two guys, Kadis's older cousin, Izuko, and the wolf boy, Akaru.
Most of the story so far has been pretty random. Neko works in a maid cafe, Izuko and his twin brother, Izumo work in a butler cafe.
In the end (i havn't written this part yet but i'm planning ahead) Kage reveals that he's actually a demon, Kadis turns evil, and Kage and Kadis get married. Neko later finds out that Kage is going to sacrifice Kadis to the King of Demons and has to save her!

But right now i kindof need to think of ways to get up to that moment. TT.TT please help! as soon as i get each chapter finished i'll put up a link to it. I hope you enjoy reading it and i plan to have chapter one drawn and edited by the end of the month. Feel free to give ideas nya!

»Vendors Will Follow The Money Of Open Source

That's what is being said by one of Intel's open source guys at an open source conference. <a href="http://www.itnews.com.au/News/69229,hardware-vendors-will-follow-the-money-to-open-source.aspx">Linux alone will see huge increases in installs</a>. This is really thanks to Ubuntu. Power users may be fighting it, but the easier the distro is to use (AND INSTALL SOFTWARE), the more pervasive Linux will get.

Quote

However, he also warned that the prospect of moving from being Windows-centric to supporting over 200 flavours of Linux could sound unnecessarily daunting. Therefore, educating vendors, particularly smaller manufacturers, about what’s actually involved in going open source is essential to combating misunderstandings. "They don’t understand that once you’re in the upstream kernel you’re ok," he said. Hohndel pointed out that companies were also often misinformed about the legal risks of going open source, or were afraid of damaging their reputation. Another concern cited by hardware companies was a fear that their products would be damaged.

I wonder who is spreading all the FUD...?

There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»ICANN Looks To Stop Domain Tasting

Those domain tasters sure like to use link farms. <a href="http://www.icann.org/minutes/prelim-report-23jan08.htm">ICANN is probably going to stop it by imposing a fee</a>. ICANN is heading down the wrong path by all these fees. Though, this goal is nice.

Quote

Bruce Tonkin recused himself from the discussion and dropped off the call during the discussion of items 5 & 6 due to potential conflict of interest. Kurt Pritz indicated that tasting is a practice that has grown over the years and that many recent discussions and writings demonstrate that the Board is already well versed on the related issues. Kurt indicated that ICANN has collected some information that a few parties have taken the practice to its logical conclusion, and operate exclusively on this model - deleting as much as 95.5% of names registered within the five-day grace period. Others exercise degrees of restraint. There are a spread percentage of names deleted in the grace period across all registrars that ranges from 0% to 99.5%. ICANN has had many discussions and consultations on this issue. It was proposed that ICANN charged a transaction fee on add-grace deletes in the 2004-2005 budget but there was substantial criticism that such a fee would be de-facto policy making by ICANN staff. Recently the GNSO voted to recommend that staff take action to change its transaction fee to change in for tasting deletes. If ICANN changed transaction fee in this manner, most think practice would cease. The vote represents Supporting Organization policy support for alternative budget.

This read is horrible, but you get the gist.

The feeling is mutual. It sucks having to learn the same thing over and over just because the class is a requirement. It sucks.

»Mass Effect Debacle Reaches Absurd new heights. Also, Hell Freezes over.

Quote

Responding to the latest press release, Kotaku's Brian Crecente asked Thompson what he thought about the Mass Effect story. Thompson responded, "The guy who shot his mouth off about it had no idea what the Hell he was talking about." (We assume he meant conservative columnist Kevin McCullough and isn't confusing Fox News guest Cooper Lawrence's gender.) Thompson later added, "This contrived controversy is absolutely ridiculous."

This is turning into the best media circus (and by far the funniest ever) since the Hot Coffee thing went over. For the record, I have not played Mass Effect, but this controversy sure does make me want to. The whole story is linked to in the article.

Yay for ABJD!! She is beautiful!! I hope you win her... I am never that lucky! To keep with the dolly madness I own a DOC Kirill, DOT T. Lahoo, DOI Luke, and DIM Dreaming Cloud Minimee.

Said By inuzukaluv

aren't they called Dolfies? i'm asking for one for my birthday in june. ^.^

In answer to this, they are often called Dollfies as a generalization but it isn't really correct. Dollfies are a brand of Asian Ball Jointed Dolls that all brands and types get lumped into even though they arn't all really Dollfies. The best way to find anything for ABJD's on ebay is to search for Dollfies as that is the header they put them under. I hope I helped and wasn't too long winded!!

»Nokia Buys Trolltech

Trolltech makes QT, the libraries that KDE is built on. <a href="http://trolltech.com/company/newsroom/announcements/press.2008-01-28.4605718236">Nokia is said to have paid a scant $150 million for Trolltech</a>. Hopefully this will spur more KDE and QT development. Nokia has a large stake in Linux with many of their devices.

Quote

The acquisition of Trolltech will enable Nokia to accelerate its cross-platform software strategy for mobile devices and desktop applications, and develop its Internet services business. With Trolltech, Nokia and third party developers will be able to develop applications that work in the Internet, across Nokia’s device portfolio and on PCs. Nokia’s software strategy for devices is based on cross-platform development environments, layers of software that run across operating systems, enabling the development of applications across the Nokia device range. Examples of current cross-platform layers are Web runtime, Flash, Java and Open C.

Quote: It is frustrating to spend $30 to $50 on a Nintendo DS game only to have it lost or damaged. A simple container to hold games securely and only allow one game out at a time is a great option! For a relatively small price you can potentially save yourself a good deal of money and avoid plenty of headaches with the Daze Products Nintendo DS Game Chamber.

<a href="http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=1228">AMD HD3870X2 @ Bjorn3D</a>

Quote

'The HD3870X2 is not your average video card. Instead of creating a single GPU with the power to compete with the 8800Ultra and beyond, AMD has chosen to go the multi-chip route instead. The HD3870X2, just as the name implies, simply is a card that has two HD3870 GPU's. It is not the first video card in history with two GPU's. The ATi Radeon Rage Fury MAX is one example and we all remember NVIDIA's first attempt, the GeForce 7950 GX2. Recently AMD tested a similar design with the HD2600 Gemini cards which were a very rare sight in the wild. NVIDIA is also working on a multi-GPU card that should be out pretty soon.'

Quote

The G92 based Geforce 8800GT was a very exciting product, unfortunately NVIDIA was short of supply and lower priced ATI HD3850 & HD3870 gained a lot of popularity this way. The higher-end market still remained untouched; to fill up this gap NVIDIA came up with a second wave of 8800GTS video cards. With the GT in mind, could we be dealing with yet another great NVIDIA product? We find out.

Quote

Sunbeamtech, the makers of fine cooling and nice cases, has another gadget up their sleeve. The new Rheobus Extreme is not only simple and sleek with its clean looks, and the blue glow of the six knobs goes well with anybody with blue LED lighting, but the best thing the Rheobus Extreme has to offer is the ability to support up to 30 watts on each control. For the novice out there, this means simply you can control multiple fans on each channel. A must for anybody with large cases with numerous fans.

Quote

It's one of those cards we've heard about quite a bit, but often when it comes to these dual GPU models they're nothing more than a bit of a prototype. Sometimes they manage to also hit the media and on the rare occasion they actually go into mass production for all to get their hands on it. The whole card design is loads better than the GX2 we saw from NVIDIA in 2006 which was literally two separate PCBs connected by a little bridge. Ultimately though it doesn't matter what the card looks like, it comes down to how it performs and that's something we're going to be looking at in just a moment.

Quote

During my time here at Bjorn3D it seems like many of the reviews we have done have been power supplies. As mentioned in another review 2007 was 'The Year of the Power Supply'. Either way, as long as manufacturers keep producing this level of quality, keep them coming. The Ultra 750W X2 Extreme delivers power, low noise and a mirror. That's right, I said a mirror. Ok, so it is a 'titanium' case that, when you look at it, you can see yourself, a mirror. It is also completely modular down to the 24 pin power connector for the motherboard. Will this power supply have the power and efficiency a computer so requires? Let's find out.

Obviously, anything you can put into that PCIe slot to update the on-board video is going to give you a boost, the MSI NX8600GT Twin Turbo is not only going to do that, its going to do it while keeping those all important big bills in your savings account. nVidia has been king of the high end market space for some time now, and the midrange has been going their way as well. When they have cards such as the NX8600GT Twin Turbo being put out by Manufacturers such as MSI in this case, its no wonder.

It's been more than a year since the first DirectX 10 graphics accelerator, containing the revolutionary G80, was presented to the public. Everyone should remember the delight it brought and the incredible performance which left all high-end competition in the dust. This time, we have a graphics card with the G92 chip on it, but the card is not from the 9xxx series as you might assume. The G92 is a carefully designed, polished version of the G80. Models based on this chip are named 8800GT and, should they appear in appropriate quantities, are bound to become very popular.

<a href="http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=11734">New Approach To ATI Linux Driver Installation</a>

Quote

Back in June of 2005 with the ATI Linux 8.14.13 driver release was a new installer to more easily facilitate the installation of this binary graphics driver using a graphical interface for a generic setup or generating distribution-specific packages (at that time Red Hat was the only officially supported distribution). With time, this installer has evolved by gaining new features and more distributions are being supported through their --buildpkg command for generating custom driver packages. These packaging scripts are now even hosted in the open for more community interaction. With two new driver options that will be formally introduced next month in Ubuntu's packaging scripts for the Catalyst 8.02 Linux driver, the installation process of the ATI fglrx driver on Ubuntu will become several steps easier.

The ATI Radeon HD 3650 is active cooled with a core clock of 725MHz and a memory clock of 800MHz and will be available with two kinds of memory ICs - GDDR3 and GDDR2. The slower and older GDDR2 memory chips will be used on the $79 price point cards, while the $99 cards will feature faster GDDR3 memory ICs...
