From Thread: What elements known to man deify gravity? Old Tue Dec 4, 2007 6:17:57 PM
And I've found the answer and it makes sense. Ok, here it goes. A full explination:
The force of gravity on hot air is less than the force of cold air pushing the less dense particles (heat) upward. Therefore there is a net unbalancing force which causes the "heat" to rise. This all has something to do with buoyancy which I haven't learned about in physics yet. So I was partially correct in saying that the effect of gravity on minuscule particles causes an apparent rising.

»MPAA Releases University Spying Toolkit - Violates GPL

The MPAA has released, and then promptly taken down, a derivative of Xubuntu to perform spying on university networks. The software offered a view into the university network in regards to file sharing. They offered the ISO but not the source code. One of the Ubuntu devs forced a takedown. Nice one. IN YOUR FACE, MPAA.

Quote

Unless a school using the tool has firewalls on the borders of its network designed to block unsolicited Internet traffic -- and a great many universities do not -- that Web server is going to be visible and accessible by anyone with a Web browser. But wait, you say: Wouldn't someone need to know the domain name or Internet address of the Web server that's running the toolkit? Yes. However, anyone familiar enough with the file-naming convention used by the toolkit could use Google to search for the server. But surely there are ways a network administrator might keep this information from being available to the entire Web, right? Yes. The toolkit allows an administrator to require a username and password for access to the Web server. The problem is that the person responsible for running the toolkit is never prompted to create a username and password. What's more, while Apache includes a feature that can record when an outsider views the site, that logging is turned off by default in the MPAA's University Toolkit.

From Thread: KDE4 In January Old Mon Dec 3, 2007 6:34:47 AM

»KDE4 In January

It is good news to see that KDE4 will be released soon, but it won't be this year. KDE4 looks very impressive. I'm going to probably dive into Qt when it is released.

Quote

Meanwhile, the progress towards KDE 4.0 is astonishing. Most parts, such as the KDE Development Platform and a lot of applications are considered stable and well-usable. Some parts of the desktop experience do not yet meet the KDE community's quality standards and expectations for a stable release. There are also some issues which need to be addressed upstream, for example a bug in certain codecs of xine that cut off audio fragments prematurely. The developers are confident to be able to release a more polished and better working KDE 4.0 desktop in January. The changed plans involve releasing on January 11th, 2008.

From Thread: What classes are you taking... Old Sun Dec 2, 2007 7:05:38 PM
21 credits + a full time job?
Yes

What was your schedule like?
Junior and Senior year they were 500 level classes with one or two 400 levels. It was 3 credits per class. It was only 7 classes. I formulated my schedule to have at least two days off during the week and cram as much as I could into the remaining three. I took a 12 hour shift on Saturdays for work.
Were you doing 21+ credits every semester?

Sometimes it was a bit less because some classes don't equal 3 credits. But it was about 20-21.

What school did you go to?
Stevens Institute of Technology

How did you maintain stability?
I didn't have a girlfriend Sad. That probably hurt me in the long run because I'm trying to make up for that fact now. But I found that having no free time helped me focus on work and school. My grades were excellent.

I'm now looking to start my own business and try that out for a bit to see if it works out. I constantly work on my website so I'd love to do some web design or general computer consulting.

From Thread: Verizon Wireless To Open Network Up Old Wed Nov 28, 2007 6:44:58 AM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»Verizon Wireless To Open Network Up

Now Verizon was feeling the heat and is now opening up their network. Any CDMA phone will work with Verizon in 2008. Screw your Verizon. Stop locking down your phones in the first place.

Quote

Verizon Wireless will continue to provide a full-service offering, from retail stores where customers can shop, to 24/7 customer service and technical support, to an easy-to-use handset interface and optimized software applications. While most Verizon Wireless customers prefer the convenience of full service, the company is listening through today’s announcement to a small but growing number of customers who want another choice without full service. Both full-service and “bring-your-own” customers will have the advantage of using America’s most reliable network.
