»Black Friday\'s Web Traffic Hard

If you were one of the many people getting hammered on Black Friday for web traffic, you caused this slow down. I'm one of them as well...

Quote

A surge of e-commerce traffic on Thanksgiving night and all day Friday apparently caught several retail giants by surprise, with Lowe's, Macy's and Victoria's Secret especially hard hit. But they were far from the exception, as almost a third of leading retailers suffered significant slowdowns on Black Friday, according to statistics released this weekend by Keynote Competitive Research, a firm that tracks Web site performance.

From Thread: Versioning File Systems For Linux Old Fri Nov 23, 2007 9:38:18 PM
Anyone using something like ZFS for Linux? I really want to put a versioning file system on my development box rebuild. I've got 5 320GB drives coming for RAID and such on two computers.

It's too bad ZFS doesn't work on Linux yet. I'd love that.

From Thread: Gift Giving Old Mon Nov 19, 2007 6:46:34 PM
I get stuff for:

Uncle&Aunt
Cousin&Wife
Cousin&Husband
3 kid cousins once removed
2 special friends
Mom
Sister
Niece
and Brother

So that makes a total of 12 gifts.

6 of the gifts will be the aforementioned foods.
The kid gifts will probably be around ten dollars each--so that's $40.
Mom gets pedicure voucher $25
Brother gets the most expensive gift--$40. He gets the red sneakers he's been asking for all year.

My mom will probably split the costs with me on all except my brother's gift and her own gift.

From Thread: Myspace/Facebook...Why? Old Mon Nov 19, 2007 7:29:37 AM
Hmmm...
perhaps i'm biased a bit.
Someone I very much loved cheated on me using Myspace & has many, many terrible women on Facebook- although he claims he doesn't keep open communications something about the whole deal and why he won't get rid of it is fishy to me....Many people i've found use Myspace/Facebook to "hook" up with someone or to find a prospective one night stand. They don't bode so well in my book- honestly, but I used them because many people that I lost touch with in college & high school use them-- its the only way to keep contact.

I still think they are destructive in most cases. For instance, I don't understand why you have to use your full real name on facebook? Where's the security? Lately, there have been very many security breaches on Facebook- they don't safeguard minors at all and now, only after a tirade of bad things happening have they decided to evaluate policies after being prompted countlessly by government officials. Myspace is already in compliance but how many breaches have they had?

You are entirely right, Pancakes. They do succeed at what they do. But I don't think these networking sites will be as good as everyone touts them to be until they safeguard everyone and are willing to take those steps. I agree with you about the outcome of social networking being particular to the individual....but I think safety is still a vast yet pertinent issue here regardless of who uses them and who doesn't.

From Thread: Software Licensing Prices To Fall Old Mon Nov 19, 2007 6:44:05 AM

»Software Licensing Prices To Fall

I find it interesting that software prices are still so high because of Microsoft and Adobe. Take Red Hat as the other example. They provide their source that CentOS compiles and releases for free. That's a nice model. Red Hat is still making loads of money even though people can get its OS for free.

Quote

Gartner also predicts that a fourth of all new business software will be delivered by software as a service by 2011. Synder said buyers need to realize that the pendulum is beginning to swing in their favor, with an increasing number of alternatives in the software market. "We would advise IT organizations to use BPO (business process outsourcing) and open-source alternatives to improve their negotiating power with software suppliers, as well as employing the emergence of third-party vendors as a means to reduce higher maintenance fees on older versions of software," he said. "(Pricing) out the possibility of using offshore skills to build application functionality as Web services will also help negotiations with vendors."

Said By Roguegal

Everything wrong with this planet is connected to money. Do away with money and we might just have a chance.

Now if you can figure out how to get rid of money in our society then you will just grabbed the golden ring.

What a terrible idea.
so. Instead of currency what shall we use? Are you saying we should all have carpenters and doctors and physicians and farmers etc. in the family so we can provide for our own families?
Or are you suggesting we go back to a barter system?
Great Idea. . .Except; the barter system is based on an equal value idea.
What if you need eggs from Farmer Bob, but farmer Bob doesn't want what you have. Say he wants the new tools from Smith Joe.
So now you either have to go to smith joe to hope to barter for the tools to barter for your eggs,
but then, what if bob just goes to joe and trades directly with him. They get what they want and your screwed.
There might be an easier explanation to that situation but it would be very difficult to live that way.
An easy way to fix that is to find something everyone wants, a global bartering tool like money.
-
Aside from that you say that People are greedy for money when thats not true. They're greedy for the things money can BUY.
It's still money but its driven by peoples inner greed and desires and their inability to control themselves thats evil.
And even if we went to a barter system etc. the greed for items would still be there and people would be even more manipulative and violent twords each other over said items.
So, to fix that we take out the items causing greed. Well uh-oh, now we have no houses or TVs or game systems or computers or anything. . . wow.
So either we end up warring barbarians trying to make sense of a barter system,
Or we live like crash test dummies overworked and stressed because of the lack of modern inconveniences in order to moderate the violence inherit in the system.

I have it!
it kicks ass!
I love it so much.
the only downside is when playing you periodically hit waypoints
so if you die you don't have to go back to your last save,
which is cool,
the downside is the game autosaves and you can't save at all,
you have to wait till the end of the lvl for it to save before you quit
or you lose progress.

»Japanese Make Musical Road

As if driving wasn't annoying enough, there are places in Japan that make your car into a jukebox. I don't expect to drive to hear music.

Quote

Motorists used to listening to the radio or their favourite tunes on CDs may have a new way to entertain themselves, after engineers in Japan developed a musical road surface. A team from the Hokkaido Industrial Research Institute has built a number of "melody roads", which use cars as tuning forks to play music as they travel. The concept works by using grooves, which are cut at very specific intervals in the road surface. Just as travelling over small speed bumps or road markings can emit a rumbling tone throughout a vehicle, the melody road uses the spaces between to create different notes.
