From Thread: Hitachi Creates Better HDD Head Old Mon Oct 15, 2007 5:38:08 AM

»Hitachi Creates Better HDD Head

Hitachi created a better R/W head for their hard drives based on older technology. <a href="http://www.news.com/2100-1041_3-6213386.html">The new head is able to read and write more data in a tightly packed area</a>. They say 4TB drives by 2011.

Quote

With the new, elegantly named current perpendicular-to-the-plane giant magneto-resistive heads (CPP-GMR heads to you laypeople), drive makers will be able to come out with 4 terabyte drives in 2011 and/or 1 terabyte notebook drives. The CPP-GMR drive essentially changes the structure of drive heads. Current drives come with a tunnel magnetoresistance head. In these, an insulating layer sits between two magnetic layers. Electrons can tunnel through the layer. Precisely controlling the tunneling ultimately results in the 1s and 0s of data.

From Thread: New ASE Code Audit Soon Old Fri Oct 12, 2007 7:24:41 PM
As an update...

I've decided to work on Version 4.

Reason: Version 3's based libraries are stale. I've since improved my coding to provide a better base. Version 4 will be sleeker and more stylish than Version 3 could ever be.

I will soon open up a thread for new feature requests in Version 4. There will be a test site opened soon as well.

From Thread: Pour Your Solar Panels Old Fri Oct 12, 2007 5:33:11 AM

»Pour Your Solar Panels

Interesting concepts coming out. <a href="http://www.news.com/Pour-yourself-a-silicon-solar-panel/2100-11392_3-6213132.html">A company can deliver a solar panel by pouring crystal on a substrate</a>. That's pretty impressive and cuts costs.

Quote

The key is that the resulting solar cell has efficiencies--or the amount of sunlight the solar cell can turn into electricity--that are closer to crystalline silicon solar cells than thin-film alternatives such as amorphous silicon or copper indium gallium selenide or CIGS. Crystalline solar cells have higher efficiencies than thin films. Commercial crystalline panels can convert up to 22 percent of sunlight into electricity, without concentrators. CIGS makers are initially shooting for the mid to low teens. The catch is that making crystalline solar cells is expensive. The patterning and other processes is similar to what is used in making LCD panels. Innovalight says it could conceivably cut the production price by around 50 percent or more. Many start-ups, however, had hit bumps in bringing new (albeit different) manufacturing techniques for solar cells to market.

From Thread: Holiday Debate Old Thu Oct 11, 2007 6:34:51 PM

Said By Artemis Panthar

Wasn't St. Valentine's Day originally about loving all of mankind, not just your significant other? I kinda wish the original intention was carried through...

I like Halloween. Because I'm a horror fan and Halloween marks a big surge of horror-based things and everyone strives to make things look eerie.

I also like the concept behind Dia De Los Muertos, although I've never formally celebrated it. I think a holiday to celebrate life and not be afraid of death is sorely needed in our society.

I like the time around Christmas, although I like getting things so I don't mind the holiday too much either XD I'm not religious, though, so the holiday holds no real meaning to me (just like Easter, but I celebrate that too).

hehe "el dia de los muertos" we celebrate that over here and I really like it hehe its weird cause I guess in the U.S. society it would b weird to celebrate that or whatever but its nice cause people remember the ones they lost and theres a lot of tradition and stuff behind it...but personally my fav its christmas not so much because of the commercial thing its just a nice time of the year to me its like I dont go to school I get to be with friends family and stuff and the food is awesomeeeee hahaha ok sorry but I dont think any other holiday has better food maybe new year but still Razz

From Thread: Sony not going to replace 60gb PS3 Old Mon Oct 8, 2007 8:40:45 AM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»Sony not going to replace 60gb PS3

An now it is guaranteed: Sony will not replace the 60gb model, allowing European sales to tank harder.

Quote

Following the previous announcement that the £349 60GB PS3 bundle that includes two first-party titles is only going to be available for a limited time, UK gamers had hoped Sony would be bringing the 80GB model, already out in the US, to our shores. However, in a statement Sony Computer Entertainment Europe said that "as the 60GB stock is depleted the £299 40GB sku will be the only version available going forward".
Gamers considering whether to invest in a PS3 this Christmas will at least for now have two versions of the console to choose from - the £349 60GB model and the £299.99 40GB model.

Linky.

Having defied all expectation over their stupidity, Sony still continues to give Europeans the shaft with the hope that they won't notice. What morons.

From Thread: Can Seagate Push Hybrid Drives? Old Mon Oct 8, 2007 6:29:43 AM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»Can Seagate Push Hybrid Drives?

I think these hybrid drives are a good idea... <a href="http://www.news.com/Can-Seagate-steer-hybrid-drive-market/2100-1041_3-6212088.html">They still need more flash memory</a>. 1GB should be minimum.

Quote

"It absolutely makes sense to take advantage of nonvolatile semiconductor memory and the best aspects of the hard disk drive technology," said John Monroe, a vice president of research at Gartner. Using the two technologies together has benefits for users, including faster boot times and better battery life. Seagate says it's positioning the Momentus 5400 PSD as a mainstream option that balances the use of flash chips with the affordability of traditional hard disk drives. Sony's Vaio SZ650 is currently shipping with the new hybrid drive from Seagate, and four other PC manufacturers have also signed on. It all depends on the order volume, but Seagate says its hybrid drives will sell for an approximately 20 to 30 percent premium over its standard hard disk drives. A 160GB hard drive from Seagate, for example, costs approximately $130.

From Thread: Halo 3 Old Fri Oct 5, 2007 3:47:35 PM
ending was crap, btw the ending was released on you tube a week before the game was sold, appearantly someone either pirated the ending from bungee's servers, or some guys played it on a tv in the back of their store and recorded it. That aside, campaign is way to short, but 4 player can lead to some hilarious shit happening. Multiplayer is decent, but it doesn't compare to halo 1's, oh...and spartan laser/hammer only matches lead to craziness, and the map editor is very very interesting, i think someone made a tank on my head...and it fell down due to gravity, on my head... man cannons ftw

»Feds Delete ca.gov Domain

Oops. It seems someone was redirecting some traffic to a porn site. <a href="http://www.networkworld.com/community/node/20192">Solution: delete California's .gov domain name</a>! Problem not solved...

Quote

Case in point: A hacker's diversion of traffic from a California county government Web site to a porn purveyor spiraled into IT chaos yesterday after a countermeasure applied from Washington essentially "deleted the ca.gov domain." Order was restored only after seven hours of frenzied coast-to-coast communications and a "forced propagation" of ca.gov network systems, according to Jim Hanacek, public information officer for the California Department of Technology Services. "We don't for sure have the whole picture, but as we understand it, there was some event at the Transportation Authority of Marin Country where their site got hacked," Hanacek told me this afternoon. Traffic was being redirected from that site to one featuring pornography.
