From Thread: Recipes Anyone? Old Mon Sep 24, 2007 5:48:09 AM
Oreo cookie balls
1 package of oreo cookies ( do NOT use the double stuffed)

1 package of cream cheese ( the package that comes in the box not the
round container)

1/2 - 1 package of milk chocolate almond bark (or any other chocolate
candy type coating)

Directions:
Crush oreos into extremely fine pieces, add cream cheese and blend
until smooth ( there should be no white showing). Roll into balls about
the size of a rubber bouncy ball, and dip in melted almond bark. Let
dry on wax paper.

Tips: melt the almond bark a little at a time because it hardens so
quickly.

These are always a big hit!!! My family loves them

From Thread: Why Blogs Are Useless Old Thu Sep 20, 2007 8:50:31 AM
(the following quotes are from from chapter two/pgs. 41-43 of "Free Culture", ISBN 0-14-303465-0)

Said By Lawrence Lessig

(...) But there are many who use the space to engage in public discourse. Discussing matters of public import, criticizing politicians about the decisions they make, offering solutions to problems we all see: blogs create a virtual public meeting (...)

That is a good point of blogs. Fora can also be used for discussion, but the blogosphere is one large very decentralized network, the writers are more independent and have more control. Also, it's possible to follow select blogs with RSS feeds, which checking one huge or many tiny fora isn't as convenient.

Said By Lessig

One direct effect is on stories that had a different life cycle in the mainstream media. The Trent Lott affair is an example. When Lott "misspoke" at a party for Senator Strom Thurmond, essentially praising Thurmond's segregationist policies, he calculated correctly that this story would disappear from the mainstream press within forty-eight hours. It did. But he didn't calculate its life cycle in blog space. The bloggers kept researching the story. Over time, more and more instances of the same "misspeaking" emerged. Finally, the story broke back into mainstream press. In the end, Lott was forced to resign as senate majority leader. [1]

The point made here is simple: blogs add an increased degree of democracy to journalism. The World Wide Web, as such, makes this already possible without blog form, but having this kind of norm makes it easier to create a web outlet and to follow a number of others' writings. Don't misunderstand "democracy", though:

Said By Lessig

But democracy has never just been about elections. Democracy means rule by the people, but rule means something more than mere elections. In our [US-American] tradition, it also means comtrol through reasoned discourse. (...) It wasn't popular elections that fascinated him — it was the jury, an institution that gave ordinary people the right to choose life or death for other citizens.

I don't read blogs, especially the relevant type, a lot. However, I occasionally read http://www.bildblog.de/ , a (German) blog that points out mistakes, exaggerations, one-sided reports, omissions etc. in the most popular paper in Europe, the (lousy) German tabloid "Bild". Would the author have started this important and high-quality site if there were no weblogging software, if the blogging trend didn't exist ? I doubt it. Would people read it (and contributed) if he had ? I dare say I believe a lot less would.

If you say that all "${NewsAgency}Blog"-type publications are useless, that may well be correct.

[1]: Lessig refers to: Noah Shachtman, "With Incessant Postings, a Pundit Stirs the Pot," New York Times, 16 January 2003, G5.

»Halo 3: Microsoft\'s Hope

Microsoft is gambling on its release of Halo 3 next week to cement the Xbox in people's living rooms. <a href="http://www.news.com/100-1043_3-6209063.html">I may consider purchasing one if the price drops... a lot</a>. I enjoy the Wii too much.

Quote

There is little doubt the game, which goes on sale at midnight on Tuesday, will be a blockbuster release. Brokerage Wedbush Morgan predicts that Microsoft could sell 3 million copies in the product's first 12 days. The 2004 release of Halo 2 brought in $125 million in its first day, a then-record, Kim said. That's a far cry from the kind of revenue that Windows or Office generates in a quarter, but it's still some serious cash.

Halo 2 become uninteresting when the level of cheat (on a console!) became too prevalent.

I've just expanded the content network once again.

You can now get all your streaming anime series from http://www.animesplat.com !

Unlike the previous new sites, this was an acquisition. It does not run the same backend... but that will change in time as soon as I work on importing the data. But for now, check out the new site and have fun streaming all the anime you want from many different series.

If you catch any broken videos, let me know.

The PDT project is working towards providing a PHP Development Tools framework for the Eclipse platform. This project will encompass all development components necessary to develop PHP and will facilitate extensibility. It will leverage the existing Web Tools Project in providing developers with PHP capabilities.

»Mozilla Starts Thunderbird Corporation

Mozilla is trying to make Thunderbird better by doing what it did with Firefox. <a href="http://www.news.com/2100-1012_3-6208483.html">Thunderbird needs better features and Exchange support</a>. Even though I hate to say the last part... There is really no good app that replaces Outlook.

Quote

The new corporation will draw the two or three dedicated Thunderbird programmers out from under their current Firefox umbrella and hire new staff, Baker said. As with its sister Mozilla Corp., the foundation set up the corporation as a convenient legal mechanism to meet overall Mozilla Foundation goals, not to be a moneymaking business, she added. The dynamic nature of the e-mail business was on display Monday when Yahoo, which operates a leading Web-based e-mail service, spent $350 million to acquire Zimbra, which develops open-source software that gives Web-based e-mail much of the feel of PC-based e-mail software. Zimbra also offers an offline version that lets people read and write e-mail from computers when they're not connected to a network, further blurring the boundaries between Web- and PC-based e-mail software.

»Microsoft Loses EU Appeal

Microsoft is once again forced to unbundle WMP from its OS and pay a hefty fine. <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6998272.stm">The appeal can go to one more court before being final</a>.

Quote

"The Court criticises, in particular, the obligation imposed on Microsoft to allow the monitoring trustee, independently of the Commission, access to its information, documents, premises and employees and also to the source code of its relevant products," it said. Microsoft has now been ordered to pay 80% of the Commission's legal costs, while the Commission has to carry a specific part of Microsoft's costs. The Commission welcomed the verdict. It will give its competition commissioner Neelie Kroes a much needed boost, after her office lost several high-profile anti-trust cases. Ms Kroes described the victory as "bittersweet", saying that software customers still have no more choice than they did three years ago.

Intel has made a major acquisition in the gaming tool market. <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=15511">They bought Havok, the company that does physics engines for many, many games</a>.

Quote

Havok most recently announced Havok 5 at the Austin Game Developers Conference, adding "major new features" in this latest edition of its modular suite of run-time technology and artists' tools. As the firm noted, Havok 5 features enhancements to its core products, Havok Physics and Havok Animation, and introduces new features for Havok Behavior, a system for developing event-driven character behaviors in a game. Some of the games using Havok technology, particularly its Havok Physics solution, include BioShock, Stranglehold, Halo 2, Half Life 2, Oblivion, Crackdown, and MotorStorm - the company is also rapidly developing and marketing further tool products.

Porcupine Tree at the Nokia Theater in Times Square was unbelievable. The opening act had Robert Fripp in it(this was last October and I can't remember for the life of me what the name of this old-man duo was), and PT was just incredible. The first half of the show was them playing the majority of Fear of a Blank Planet(before it was released), and the other half was old stuff(most off of Deadwing and In Absentia, but I can't complain).
