»Attack Steals 1.6 Million Monster.com Accounts

It seems that phishing works extremely well. 1.6 Million Monster.com accounts have been phished.

Quote

A computer program was used to access the employers' section of the website using stolen log-in credentials. Symantec said the log-ins were used to harvest user names, e-mail addresses, home addresses and phone numbers, which were uploaded to a remote web server. The stolen data could be used to send phishing and spam e-mails. "This remote server held over 1.6 million entries with personal information belonging to several hundred thousands of candidates, mainly based in the US, who had posted their resumes to the Monster.com website," reported Symantec.

»Wikipedia Scanner uncovers scandals

Quote

One American student sent major corporations, governments and even the Vatican on the defensive after coming up with Wikipedia Scanner, a software program that reveals who changed Wikipedia entries.
Wikipedia.com is an online encyclopedia edited by general users, who write articles on every imaginable subject. Since it is written by users, anyone can edit, delete and arrange the articles on Wikipedia.
What Virgil Griffith did was come up with a program that reveals who edits these articles, via a system where it scans the I.P address and cross-references it with the I.P. directory.

As soon as the software was launched on the internet, chaos erupted.

Linky.

Most of the list is all to predictable, but one of particular comedy I found was this one:

Quote

- BBC changes Blair's drink from coffee to vodka and his workout from the gym to the bedroom. Someone from the BBC also changes Bush’s page, changing the name from ”George Walker Bush” to “George Wan*** Bush”

Anyways, I guess that kind of implodes any credibility Wikipedia had as a reliable source of info.

»Space Shuttle Undocks Early

Shuttle Endeavor has undocked from the ISS. It was for fear of hurricane Dean.

Quote

If the storm shifted toward Houston, NASA would evacuate the space centre, which oversees the shuttle during flight, and set up an emergency command post at KSC in Florida. Endeavor is scheduled to touch down in Florida at 1232 EDT (1632 GMT) on Tuesday, but the back-up landing site at Edwards Air Force Base in California will be available if needed, Shannon said.

@Aron: er, isn't the whole article about the fact that the car analogy doesn't work ?

@TechiFreak5: you're supposedly the kind of person to whom the difference is actually worth ${price_difference}

Also, this isn't about technical superiority or even equality. Being able to use a nice "install packages" (synaptic, adept, ubuntu's add/remove programs) program most of the time and if that doesn't work resort to the command line or get someone to help you install it... that may not be as good as Mac OS X, or perfect, but it essentially work, and it close enough — surely not a difference worth $200.

(also, unified packaging can work on OSX but not on Linux because OSX is one single universally unified system, Linuxes are just similar... but that's beside the point)

I need a lot of help here guys. I downloaded stronghold 2 and then used the auto-updater to patch it to version 1.3.1. problem is i am unable to use the crack. it's an image file. Intructions tell me to burn the image file as "normal cd". and then set rmps emulation on. But when i try using alcohol to burn the image, it does not work. It keeps asking me to insert a cd/dvd into the recorder.

The first half was pretty disappointing the second half of the movie more than made up for it.

Movie Spoiler: I think the reason they changed the scene in the DoM when Bellatrix doesn't just knock Sirius into the veil she actually curses him is because they didn't watn the audience that hadn't read the books to think ther was any way for him to come back.

Book Spoiler: The people who haven't read the books are going to be really shocked by the sixth. If i hadn't read the books I really would have thought that Harry and Luna had some kind of romantic dynamic in the OotP movie...

»700MHz Spectrum Still Up In The Air

Why are we debating releasing this spectrum back to the people? I'm sick of companies buying all the airwaves because of an old and useless organization (The FCC). The spectrum should be open.

Quote

Today, both the 700MHz and white-space frequencies are used to deliver analog TV service. But when broadcasters transition to digital TV service in 2009, the 700MHz spectrum, which includes broadcast channels 52 to 69, will be auctioned off. And spectrum between channels 2 to 52 will essentially lay fallow. Public policy experts see this transition to digital as a perfect opportunity to make spectrum available for new players who want to compete in the broadband market. On their own, these slivers of wireless spectrum are not sufficient to provide enough capacity for companies to build wireless broadband services that truly compete against high-bandwidth services offered by the cable and phone companies. But combined with other pieces of spectrum, like Wi-Fi, this spectrum could provide enough capacity to deliver competitive services.

From Thread: Cellulosic Ethanol Is The Future Old Tue Aug 14, 2007 6:02:00 AM

»Cellulosic Ethanol Is The Future

The USA is stupid for using corn-based ethanol for fuels. Cellulosic-based ethanol can use nearly any plant by-product for ethanol production. This mean that food prices won't increase because of fuel. And don't get me started on how wasteful getting ethanol from corn is.

Quote

Making ethanol from forestry or agricultural waste does not involve the same intensive farming as corn, which requires more water and labor, cellulosic ethanol proponents say. Also, in the ongoing food-versus-fuel debate, cellulosic ethanol advocates say that forests don't compete for land with food crops. The Soperton, Ga., plant will be using wood cast away by loggers. Trees are hauled to a central point where their tops and branches are cut off, providing the material for Range Fuels' multi-step thermochemical process. Tree branches will go into a large tank where enough heat and pressure are applied to the mix to turn it into a gas. That synthetic gas is treated and then passed through a chemical catalyst which converts the gas to alcohol. Finally, the alcohol gas is converted to fuels and then turned into liquid.

Vista has its problems. But I think that the main reason people don't want to upgrade is the cost factor. I think the second reason is that in order to use it, most folks would have to seriously upgrade their hardware. Which goes back to the first reason - cost.

Endeavour has a gouge from takeoff that MAY need repair. They aren't bailing out so don't freak out.

Quote

Shuttle astronauts used a robot arm to scan the damage with a laser that provided a three-dimensional view showing that the 8-centimetre (3-inch) gash penetrated all the way through the thin tiles that protect the shuttle from heat as it flies through the atmosphere before landing. Mission management team chairman John Shannon said NASA needed to do more tests before making a decision to repair the damage, caused by a chunk of foam that fell off the shuttle's fuel tank about a minute after lift-off on Wednesday from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, US.

»Schedules Direct $15/3 Months For MythTV

The company that was founded in the wake of Data Direct's demise will charge $15 for 3 months of service. It is also non-recurring. They hope to lower the cost to $20 for a year soon.

Quote

The answer to everyone's top question is.... $15 / 3 months non-recurring.

That's too much money!
Sorry... until we have some idea as to the subscriber count we need to make sure we can pay the bills. We expect pricing to drop by the end of the initial term. Our goal is $20/year.
