From Thread: NX Version 3 Released Old Tue Jun 26, 2007 5:59:13 PM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»NX Version 3 Released

I use the free version of NX at home and it is great. FreeNX should be updated soon to provide the new features. The big thing is that the latest version can do local display forwarding. This is huge for remote control. I'm still trying to enable that feature...

Quote

* Desktop sharing

NX 3.0.0 gives remote access to the local display of the Unix workstation where the server is installed, meaning that users and system administrators can now get quick access to all the computer's resources and remotely control any NX-enabled PC over the Internet.

* Session shadowing

Multiple users can now connect to a NX session at the same time, show and share files, demonstrate software and presentations, even chat with the other users on the server. Session shadowing is supported for all remote desktop protocols, including RDP (Windows Terminal Server) and VNC, opening NoMachine NX to a new range of collaboration applications.

I know what you mean...I get along better with guys because they don't whine or start any drama or talk behind your back, at least not negatively. My guy hasn't shown any signs of discomfort yet, I guess because he's really only met the 2 or 3 girls I ever found to be actually cool. He hangs out with mostly girls but I've met them all and they're pretty awesome.

»Quantum Not Gate

This is awesome news. Scientists have created a quantum not gate. These little steps could one day prove to provide very very fast computing for everyone.

Quote

Mooij and co-workers created the quantum version of a basic building block of computer logic, called the controlled-not (CNOT) gate, which switches a bit from 0 to 1 or vice versa if a second bit is set to 1-or does nothing if that bit is set to 0. "You need something like a controlled-not gate to make every quantum algorithm you might need," Mooij says. Their gate, described in this week's Nature, consisted of two side-by-side loops of aluminum cooled to a few kelvins (nearly -459 degrees Fahrenheit). A current flowing around one loop created a magnetic field that influenced the current flowing around the second loop.

From Thread: Symlinks and Samba Old Sat Jun 23, 2007 6:48:34 AM
If anyone has a problem with a mounted Samba share on a Linux box because of symlinks that don't follow to the correct path, just disable unix extensions in the smb.conf file.

I had links that pointed to a location on the samba computer's filesystem and when mounted, the client assumed that it was mounted locally (which was wrong). I just told samba that "unix extensions = no" and all links now look like regular files.

»Mandriva Rejects Microsoft

Mandriva is the latest Linux Distro company to reject partnering with Microsoft. Microsoft is trying to choke the open source industry but is failing.

Quote

"Interoperability between the Windows and Linux world is important and must be dealt with, and anything that helps this interoperability is a good thing," wrote Bancilhon, adding that "the best way to deal with interoperability is open standards." "As far as (intellectual property) is concerned, we are, to say the least, not great fans of software patents and of the current patent system, which we consider as counterproductive for the industry as a whole," Bancilhon continued. "We also believe what we see and, up to now, there has been absolutely no hard evidence from any of the FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) propagators that Linux and open-source applications are in breach of any patents. So we think that, as in any democracy, people are innocent unless proven guilty, and we can continue working in good faith."

From Thread: Microsoft: Please Use Vista Now Old Thu Jun 21, 2007 10:12:54 PM
I read fat-rich over and over again (which makes more honest sense)

Regardless, I find it hard to believe anyone who did much testing or research would readily believe that switching would be a good idea. My limited experience of putting Vista onto other computers has resulted pretty consisitently with some form of castration or another (I remain intact, fortunately). Hearing all the security effort put into the system, I told a dozen people to upgrade soon. I've done three upgrades and wondered if that was a good idea.

An integrated firewall that doesn't play nice with others, a media player that won't directly access removable media, network managment that doesn't even bother with the default settings when it can mix match the "most magical connection ever!"

Crack addicts have done better at fixing windows systems than me...ripping it apart and selling the components....that's the best way, there.

From Thread: SFTP vs SCP Speed Old Thu Jun 21, 2007 6:19:41 AM
Anyone have any opinions on which is faster?

I was using Krusader to SFTP files and they were going awefully slow. Over my 100Mbps network, they went at around ~1MBps. When I switched to command line scp, the transfer rate reached near the theoretical max bandwidth nearly 10 times the speed.

I haven't done any other tests, but my next step is to try the command line sftp program and see if it was Krusader that was the slow down...

»New Mexico Denies RIAA Discovery

NM may be one of first states to stop this RIAA discovery nonsense. Denying discovery means that the RIAA can't just probe around for information that they don't have for a case.

Quote

The RIAA has argued that it would suffer irreparable harm unless immediate discovery was allowed, but Judge Garcia didn't find that argument convincing. "While the Court does not dispute that infringement of a copyright results in harm, it requires a Coleridgian 'suspension of disbelief' to accept that the harm is irreparable, especially when monetary damages can cure any alleged violation," wrote the judge. "On the other hand, the harm related to disclosure of confidential information in a student or faculty member’s Internet files can be equally harmful."
