My daughter is as obsessed with oldies as she is with today's music. She loves Devo and Whip It and sings along with me in the car when my oldies station is on. Even my son likes them. Thanks to the animated movies they have out now, which are loaded with oldies tunes, he knows quite a lot of them.

From Thread: Internet Radio May Be Saved Old Fri Apr 27, 2007 5:03:21 AM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»Internet Radio May Be Saved

A Republican has introduced legislation to go back to the percentage of revenue model for royalties as opposed to the per song, per listener approach that the cartels want. The bill will levy a 7.5 percent tax on revenue for royalties. That still sucks.

Quote

Advocates have dreaded the CRB ruling, which they say could raise rates between 300 to 1200 per cent for webcasters. Earlier this month, the CRB threw out an appeal by commercial webcasters, National Public Radio and others to review the new rates and postpone a May 15 deadline for the introduction of the royalty schedule.

If passed, today's bill would set new rates at 7.5 per cent of the webcaster's revenue - the same rate paid by satellite radio. Alternatively, webcasters could decide to pay 33 cents per hour of sound recordings transmitted to a single user.

This hits home because I'm planning on doing something good with http://www.ase.fm .

I don't write my own music, but I have a friend who does. I'm absolutely in awe of her. She doesn't put it out on the internet, though, and she only sings it for a few people she trusts, so I guess I'm lucky to get to hear it at all. She's really good, though. I wish I could convince her to go more public with her work.

From Thread: MPAA: Committed To Fair Use? Old Thu Apr 26, 2007 10:47:00 AM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»MPAA: Committed To Fair Use?

With DRM of course. Though they completely sidestep the issue that the DMCA disallows breaking DRM encryption. This is the case even for fair use which is totally legal for everyone. Those bastards.

Quote

The MPAA does recognize that progress on DRM needs to be made soon, or impatient consumers will increasingly turn to unauthorized sources for content. "We're working on this right now, trying to find ways to make it interoperable," he said, but added that pricing and business models for such a system are "way beyond my pay grade." Dean Garfield, VP of Legal Affairs for the MPAA, told me that he has confidence in the market to sort all of these issues out. "You have to give some thought to how young the digital distribution market is," he said. "I suspect that the issues confounding people today won't be the issues challenging the industry six months from now."

That progress on DRM should include getting rid of it all together.

»MySQL Plans IPO

This is some big news from MySQL (the company). They have cash and are planning an IPO.

Quote

The company garnered about $50 million in revenue in 2006, Mickos said in an interview at the MySQL Conference and Expo here. That compares with $6.5 million in 2002 and about $34 million in 2005, according to earlier figures Mickos cited in a speech two years earlier. Of the company's bottom line, Mickos said, "Profitability isn't a specific goal yet, but we aren't burning cash. We go a bit above breakeven, a bit below breakeven."

In a way I understand that someone doens't want to "give away" their hard work so people would enjoy it and not pay for it. But I don't think there are that many people with internet only radio stations... But I would have to see the "numbers" to make a judgement.

From Thread: Opera: Love it or Hate it? Old Tue Apr 24, 2007 5:59:02 AM

Said By Calypso

I don't like to listen to oera, because it drives me crazy when I can't understand the words, but I do like to go to operas, because then you can see on stage what's supposed to be happening.

If you listen with the "libretto", usually there is a translation next to the words. That's how I learn the little Italian I know, following the Opera while listening. And in many theaters now, they have "Overtitles" where you see the translation of what they are singing. In New York, at the Met, every chair has a little screen in the back where you see the translation too.
