I appreciate that Blizzard doesn't just keep driving out games. Their game quality is among the best in the industry and you can't get that if you're cranking out games at record speed. They go for big games with big sales and good quality. Good for them.

Her name is Samantha.
She is older.
She is in college.
She is nicer.
There was just a resemblance of appearance in the first picture of her posted.

From Thread: Controversy Over A Brilliant -- But Sick! -- Mind Old Tue Feb 6, 2007 6:59:52 AM
This article is not strictly science-related, but about some reflections I had concerning an eminent scientist.

W. French Anderson is a pioneer of molecular biology, professor of biochemistry and pediatrics, and more importantly the father of gene therapy. His work has been crucial to the development of treatments for many diseases, and his contribution to the benefit of Mankind has been tremendous.

W. French Anderson is a child molester, guilty of having used his brilliant intellect to coerce a little 9-year-old girl, daughter of one of his research colleague, into sexual activity until she was 14 or so. His impact on the helpless victim has marked her for life and his acts are absolutely despicable.

The Californian justice has condemned him to a 14-year sentence in jail, despite his wife's claim of innocence and his colleagues' plea for more leniency. His wife also stated that this would amount to a death sentence when the other inmates learn the nature of his conviction.

The dilemma here is immense, as we cannot let a child molester walk out free of the courtroom, yet we deprive science of further advancement at the same time.

The American government's justification of the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was that the death of 100,000 would save the lives of millions. So, should be allow W. French Anderson to carry on saving thousands, maybe even millions of live after he's destroyed this little girl's -- now a young woman -- life?

For more information, there's an article about this sad story over at The Scientist website: "Colleagues upset by Anderson sentence"

From Thread: Maine Throws Out Real ID Old Mon Feb 5, 2007 12:31:08 PM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»Maine Throws Out Real ID

The unconstitutional Real ID Act of 2005 has been voted out by Maine. Other states are doing the same thing. Having a national ID system is unconstitutional because they would be able to track individual purchases and FORCE you to get the ID. A driver's license is optional and isn't required to do anything.

Quote

States will have to comply by May 2008. If they do not, driver's licenses that fall short of Real ID's standards cannot be used to board an airplane or enter a federal building or open some bank accounts. About a dozen states have active legislation against Real ID, including Arizona, Georgia, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Utah and Wyoming. Missouri state Rep. James Guest, a Republican, formed a coalition of lawmakers from 34 states to file bills that oppose or protest Real ID.

From Thread: Dell Cuts Management Old Mon Feb 5, 2007 5:54:54 AM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»Dell Cuts Management

Michael Dell is looking to trim the bureaucracy facing Dell. It seems he is on the right path to correct the company slips. Now only if government could do the same.

Quote

In its executive ranks, the number of top managers who report to Dell would be streamlined from more than 20 to 12. "We have great people...but we also have a new enemy: bureaucracy, which costs us money and slows us down," he wrote The moves come as Dell tries to retake its lead in the PC market. In 2006, Dell started growing slower than the market, the first time that has happened since the company started back in the mid-1980s. HP overtook Dell as the largest PC manufacturer midway through 2006. Dell fell short of that $60 billion target during its 2006 fiscal year, with $55.9 billion in revenue.

From Thread: Mother Nature Stressed Up By Her Unruly Children Old Mon Feb 5, 2007 5:36:22 AM
Economics have certainly played an important role. But don't you think that research on alternative sources of energy could have been performed a bit more seriously? The switch from coal-burning power plants to nuclear ones has been done quite efficiently. So why not try to harness in a more efficient way all the possibilities offered naturally, like solar and wind power? The current technologies are totally inefficient in using the Sun and the wind, and certainly need more research to make these sources of energy economically viable.

From Thread: Any interesting concert tours in your neck of the woods? Old Sun Feb 4, 2007 8:56:37 AM
Yeah, a lot of concert goers are rude as all hell. The Morrissey concert was awesome, but the people weren't. They were shoving and smoking (in a small, enclosed space, no less) and it just made the concert that much less enjoyable. However, I'm a big Morrissey fan, I grew up on his music so it was still worth it and, on his end, everything was perfect XD But the people man...I thought Morrissey fans would be a wee bit better behaved than the giant stadium of Green Days fans from the concert I went to last year =\ Someone kept trying to steal my mother's purse...
