»Jim Allchin Retires

As Vista hits store shelves while no one cares, Mr. Allchin will retire a day after. <a href="http://news.com.com/2009-1016_3-6153922.html">He is smart to avoid the fallout from the crap that Vista will spew</a>.

Quote

After five years in development and endless feedback from Allchin and thousands of other testers, Vista is ready for the masses. It will hit store shelves on Tuesday. One day later, Allchin, as promised, will retire after 16 years with the software maker. It's not yet clear how Allchin's latest product will affect his legacy. While early reviews of the operating system have been lukewarm, Allchin said he is confident that time will show Vista to be a significant improvement over previous versions of Windows.

You know, the controllers look pretty cool. I haven't been able to try them myself yet, but I can see how if the strap isn't strong enough the controller might wind up in a tv.

I, also, *love* Ken Wantanabe. I read an interview that he did about how emotional it was to go to Japan and film many of these scenes. It is supposed to be a very powerful movie, and very thought provoking. I actually enjoy many WW2 movies (my hubby is a huge WW2 history nut). My favorites including Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers (on HBO). I will be interested to see how they portray the Americans in this new movie.

From Thread: NIST Announces New Hash Competition Old Wed Jan 24, 2007 11:52:32 AM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»NIST Announces New Hash Competition

NIST is now unhappy about the SHA-1 vulnerability being shown over and over. <a href="http://www.csrc.nist.gov/pki/HashWorkshop/index.html">They want a better hash and are inviting people to do it</a>. Hashes and most crypto technologies will always be cracked eventually.

Quote

Due to recent attacks on the SHA-1 hash function specified in FIPS 180-2 , Secure Hash Standard, NIST is initiating an effort to develop one or more additional hash algorithms through a public competition, similar to the development process for the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Two workshops (see menu at left) have been held to assess the status of the NIST-approved hash functions, to discuss possible near- and long-term options, and to discuss hash function research in preparation for launching such a competition. In addition, NIST has published its policy on the use of the current hash functions, and has proposed a tentative timeline for the competition.

It's not enforced. It's an archaic law from older days in the more conservative cities put in place to discourage people from doing it (or adding it on charges for usually well-known political figures and such) but it's really just a leftover that no one bothers to omit because it's never, ever enforced.

From Thread: Dumb Laws Old Wed Jan 24, 2007 9:30:23 AM
Some rules are so incredibly retarded.

In my homestate (Oregon)

Canned corn is not to be used as bait for fishing.
Ice cream may not be eaten on Sundays.
Dishes must drip dry.
It is illegal to buy or sell marijuana, but it is legal to smoke it on your own property.
One may not bathe without wearing "suitable clothing," i.e.,that which covers one's body from neck to knee.

Beaverton
You must buy a $10 permit to be allowed to install a burglar alarm.

Eugene
It is legal to conduct a horse race or a symphony concert.
It is illegal to show movies or attend a car race on Sundays. (Repealed in the 1970s)

Hood River
Juggling is strictly prohibited without a license.

Klamath Falls
It's illegal to walk down a sidewalk and knock a snakes head off with your cane.

Portland
People may not whistle underwater.
It's against the law for a wedding ceremony to be performed at a skating rink. (Repealed in 1989)
You cannot wear roller skates in restrooms.

Marion
Ministers are forbidden from eating garlic or onions before delivering a sermon.

Myrtle Creek
One may not box with a kangaroo.

Salem
Women may not wrestle in Salem.

Springfield
It is illegal to own a reptile within the city limits, unless you are a school or city, as a pet.

Stanfield
No more than two people may share a single drink.
Cloth towel dispensers are banned from restrooms.

But of course, no one enforces this shit.
