This thread will be the "database," if you will, of my photoshop tutorials. My logic is that it will be easier to discuss them or ask questions here than in the individual threads the SysAdmin creates. Similarly, I will keep then links to them all, talk about progress and use this thread to discuss future topics to explore. It will also tell what my next one will be about.

Topic One:
»Photoshop Lesson: Aging Photos for Beginners

Next Topic: Fixing an Antique Photo/Photo Maintenence

From Thread: Cisco Drops $830 Million For Email Security Company Old Thu Jan 4, 2007 7:17:11 AM
There is a new news item posted at »ASE Labs

»Cisco Drops $830 Million For Email Security Company

Cisco looks like they are expanding their reach again. The company called IronPort has a specialized link filter.

Quote

The company developed the technology in response to new tactics used by spammers. Specifically, spammers have been inserting links into e-mails instead embedding the spam message in the e-mail. As a result, traditional spam filters that scan the content of e-mail messages can't filter the unwanted messages. Cisco is the world's leader in networking equipment that shuttles Internet Protocol communications traffic around a corporate environment. Through several acquisitions, the company has also built a strong security portfolio. The IronPort acquisition is significant for Cisco mainly because it expands Cisco's security expertise beyond the network and allows it to offer products that also filter actual communications. This is especially important as new security threats emerge from a growing volume of spam.

From Thread: UK Cameras Fitted With Speakers Old Wed Jan 3, 2007 1:21:37 AM
The concerns are valid. However, I object to the use of the term "spy cameras", as they are security and surveillance cameras, most of which can plainly be seen by the people they are monitoring.

Of course, some of them could be hidden and I'd say it's probably at least a person's right to know if they may be being filmed by large government or private agencies while out in public ... albeit, there's nothing to stop a private person covertly filming a public area all s/he wants - and I wouldn't want there to be, in a free society. I was filming the cityscape of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia once from the top of a tall tower, open to the public, and a security official detained me because apparently you need special permission to film from there. Well, I don't want my society to become *that* restrictive.

However, I do believe there are valid concerns with the level of cameras on public places in Britain and the scope for invading the privacy of individuals or stalking them from camera to camera.

Video cameras on officer's heads is a good idea though, because it gives the traditional British bobbie's tall helmet a purpose for being!! Also it would allow anything witnessed by an officer to be used as evidence (for defence *or* prosecution) and also prevent such officers from doing or saying anything they wouldn't want to be filmed doing. As long as they only wear them while on duty in uniform.

I've been reading about how shitty the broadcom people are with Linux. The bcm43xx driver was reverse engineered and requires the firmware. Have you got the firmware installed? I also read that people can use ndiswrapper to get the card working.
