I was wondering about that too, but Sony has precedent for doing such nonsense (they did something similar on the PSP a year or so ago with Firmware 5.50), and this entire console generation has been a big FU to consumers no matter which company you buy into (the 360 Memory Unit fiasco, for example).
Michael: Jodie, how's my schedule look for today? Jodie: You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection. Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!

Companies that are overly clingy to proprietary hardware and software are really beginning to get up my nose. I remember back when Sony started selling the Vaio desktops and lappies, how difficult is was to even do basic upgrades and work. An extra bracket here, a locking mechanism there, only certain hardware (usually the expensive stuff) was able to work with their comps, and the list goes on and on. I really think PC and gaming companies should take a lesson from enthusiasts and make their stuff more compatible. Hell, dare I go as far to say that even make the console hardware easy enough for PC enthusiasts and techs to work on? *gasp*
