Chrome using approximately double the RAM of Firefox... Old Sun Jun 20, 2010 8:30:23 AM #125500 Perm Link
Does it sound reasonable to have Chrome using about double the memory that Firefox does (average per-tab)?

I've got 15 tabs via 2 windows in Chrome, which totals 905.9 MB; Firefox has 17 tabs via 4 windows in one profile, 3 tabs via 1 window in another, which totals 490.8 MB. Details below:

Profile A (Firefox)

Tabs-per-window:
{4,7,3,3)

Extensions:
DownloadHelper 4.7.3
DownThemAll! 1.1.10
Google Toolbar for Firefox 7.0.20100326L
Lazarus: Form Recovery 2.0.5
NoScript 1.9.9.87

Profile B (Firefox)

Tabs-per-window:
{3}

Extensions:
Google Toolbar for Firefox 7.1.20100408Lb1
Live HTTP headers 0.16

Profile C (Chrome)

Tabs-per-window:
{10,5}

Extensions:
Docs PDF/PowerPoint Viewer (by Google) - Version: 1.5.8
Google Checkout Promo Notifier (by Google) - Version: 1.0
Google Dictionary (by Google) - Version: 1.0.2
Google Voice (by Google) - Version: 2.2.1.6

Total RAM from Firefox = 490.8 MB
Total RAM from Chrome = 905.9 MB

This puts it at roughly 25 MB per-tab for Firefox, and 60 MB per-tab for Chrome... that sounds quite high to me, but I don't know; what do you people think?

My understanding is that Chrome puts each tab in a new process which will take up much more RAM. If a "tab" crashes, it won't take down the entire browser. Firefox will be doing the same in a future release.

2014 is going to be a good year. More content, more streamlining. Be a part of history!
