Dell Studio XPS
Windows 7 64 Bit
Core i7 Q720 1.6GHz
4GB memory

So, this morning windows installed updates and things went to shit pretty quickly. Every time I open a program, it immediately freezes and stops responding. In short, I cant do anything. However run completely peachy in safemode.

I've done the following with no success:
-Completely uninstalled McAfee
-Ran super anti spyware and malware bytes, nothing turned up
-Stopped every non-essential boot item with Auto Runs
-Killed 3 hookers

Any suggestions? Under normal piss ass circumstances I would have just re-installed windows, but I'm at school and have no disk.

Thanks.

Can you roll back the changes?

By the way, this is one of the best thread titles I've seen.

I uninstalled the updates, no dice. There were no restore points either.

I walked into town to a computer repair shop today to see if they would sell me a disk. It was filled with long haired overweight virgins who I did not trust with my laptop. They said they wouldnt sell me a disk for 'legal' reasons, but would re-install windows for $80. I wasnt about to let them touch my laptop with their greasy little sausage fingers, so I crumbled and bought a copy of windows for $160. I didnt have time to keep fucking around with it. I'll just resell it on ebay at a loss. Oh well. I'm back in action now.

I find this unacceptable and the main reason I run Linux. If something doesn't work and I need to reinstall the OS (what? That doesn't happen on Linux..), I have tons of different copies to use and all are legit. No buying needed.

The fact that you OWN a license to the software and can't get the installation media is unacceptable. I'd probably write to Microsoft and let them know what happened. They might give you a refund.

I feel sorry for the 3 hookers you killed Wink.

Glad it's working, though.

Yup, I agree completely. And they wonder why people pirate software.

Manufacturers are required to give you a reinstallation disk, but dell only does it if you call and request one - and they take their damn time sending it,

Actually Gamerfreak, there is a place that you can "legally" download the ISO for Windows 7! There is a company called Digital River, that has partnered up with Microsoft for just that reason. Many people loose their copy of Windows and call Microsoft regarding this issue. It used to be that one would have to wait for MS to send a new disk, with a new activation key. It could take several weeks to a few months to receive the new disk and COA. They then partnered up with Digital River to cure this issue. The following link is to a site called "My Digital Life" and if you scroll down towards the bottom, you will see the links to the download for the Windows 7 ISO. Don't bother with the Amazon ones for Windows 7 Ultimate, as these no longer work. Just click on the links in the Digital River lines, and it will automatically open the download window. You will need a ISO burning software such as Nero, or some of the free ones available for download to enable you to burn the ISO to disk, and it will be a legit copy of Windows 7. You will of course have to use your Windows key on the bottom of your laptop to activate the Windows copy.

http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/11/10/windows-7-iso-x86-and-x64-official-direct-download-links-ultimate-professional-and-home-premium/

Good luck my friend. Hope this helps in the future, or for friends that have the same issue.

I once screwed up a GRUB setup so bad that the only way I could think of to get it fixed was to reinstall Linux and work from their. Granted, I later found out what I would have needed to do to fix things, but...

Michael: Jodie, how's my schedule look for today?
Jodie: You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection.
Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!

I mean that the OS won't screw up itself. Linux gives you the freedom to break your computer just as Windows does.
