GOOD! Let's keep it going!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060916/pl_nm/life_california_cellphones_dc

I'm tired of dipshits who can't drive, let alone drive while talking on the fuggin phone!
This should be a nation-wide law.

Quote

although the law will not take effect until July 1, 2008, to allow time to educate the public.

Educate the people?..here you go..New law..you cannot hold a friggin phone in your hand while driving. There's your education.

This is already in NJ and people still use their phones on the road...

I agree, they suck at driving.

I don't agree with these laws, if you are not driving safely there are already unsafe driving and careless driving laws on the books. This is nothing more than another thing for the cops to sit on the side of the road and look for to pad municipal income for the end of the month.

Most of the studies done on this subject show there are more dangerous things to be doing in your car other than using a cell phone. Using your car sterero, reaching for items on the seat or glove compartment, or talking to passangers all have been shown to contribute more to accidents. Also most studies do not show any significant change in the risk between handheld and handsfree cell phone use anyway so these laws do not make anything safer. In fact there are new studies coming out that suggest this big push to handsfree devices has actually made the problem worse. People now yack on thier phone with an extra hand free to play with the stereo, thier GPS, or and of the hundreds of "legal" distractions we keep in our cars.

Most people also can't drive well in the first place...

That's why there should be license renewal tests every 10 years.

That's an all new high of stupididty right there.

I agree this is a good law. Why? A big percentage of the time that I see a driver do one of those astonishingly stupid things I look over and guess what I see? A FRICKIN CELLPHONE HANGIN OFF THEIR EAR! Not to say people can't drive bad without cellphones, but they can't help. And I don't really care if I can't talk in the car cuz I don't like the phone anyway, lol.

Another thing I can't stand is when people use a cell phone in the car to have long conversations...

WHY?

It is a freaking CELL PHONE. Say your business then hang up!

Exactly. Here's something pretty fun to do, when you hear somebody near you talking really loud on a cellphone just start replying to whatever they're saying, This is especially fun if they have one of those little headsets that makes them look like they're talking to themselves Huge Grin I realize some people NEED to talk on them a lot for business or other reasons but good god can't the frickin jibber jabber wait?

This law has been in NY for a really long time now.. and I saw a police officer, on her cell phone, talking, driving in the county car. It's a law no one enforces.

They wouldn't break the law. THEY ARE THE LAW!
But seriously, this is just being used as a scapegoat for people who can't drive in the first place, and the resistance to change driving standards that haven't changed for almost 50 years.

Michael: Jodie, how's my schedule look for today?
Jodie: You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection.
Michael: Oh, yeah...sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!

We have to change american's attitudes that it's ok to drink coffee, do makeup, call on the phone, make pizza, make margaritas, etc in a car. In a car, you drive it. This is why they don't have cup-holders in European sports cars.

Then why do European (German, of all such things) and Japanese luxury cars come with car phones?

Which means the cell phone laws are a scapegoat for not fixing the broken drving laws. I'm not saying that its a good thing to use your phone when driving, but to say that is why people are crashing is silly.

In reality, the cell phone issue is correct...

I can see the difference in myself when I talk on the phone in the car. Even with a handset, it is totally different than chatting with someone else in the car. My attention to the road does drop a bit...

Likewise, there are many other distractions that also do this that I do use. These laws should be common sense, not finable offences.
